Whatever you may think about the pick, his confidence is undeniable and the more I learn about him the more I can understand why. Leaving home at 14 and having to live and cook for yourself at that age cannot be easy. Not every 14 year can go through something like that. He seems to be very mature with a lot of mental toughness. Hopefully it will serve him well here.

That Wright fell to 4th lessen the direct comparison issue that would've been inevitable if he went next at 2nd...

I hope Hughes & co are right & Juraj becomes an elite winger. Anything short of that is bad news as there were some D & C options there to be taken... a mid 6 fwd instead of any one of Jiricek, Wright & Cooley hitting their potential will be tough to swallow after landing a 1OA pick.

Time will tell if it was a schrewd bet or a bad gamble

Cooking at the age of 14? I didn't do that at this age. Barely was able to cook anything at the age 18 yrs.

New Jersey didn't need another C so it was either Slavkovsky or the best D in Nemec for them. And Arizona probably expected MTL to draft Wright (per Bob McKenzie's tweet that most of the teams expected Wright) so they probably spent more time scouting and interviewing Cooley so they stuck with who they knew best.

Assuming Wright reaches his potential, Seattle in year 2 is already set at C, while MTL will hope Dach pans out or spend a couple more years looking for another C.

I wish Slafkovsky the best and hope he becomes an awesome player for MTL. Time will tell if MTL made the right choice. I certainly hope so.
