Montoyo feels like a bench coach masquerading as a manager. He might be a good teacher and people person and all that, but those are the traits that would make him an ideal lieutenant to a tactically capable manager.

I knew Chatwood sucked as I watched the Cubs waste money on him as a starter and was pure garbage. I posted it was a garbage signing but ol Charlie still trots him out there. I rather see Victor Zambrano out there.

Chatwood's first 16 appearances (Apr 1 through May 21):
17 IP 8 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 24K, 0.53 ERA, .222 OBP

His last 6 appearances (May 23 through June 9):
4.2 IP, 9 H, 11 ER, 9 BB, 2 K, 21.21 ERA, .600 OBP

You bring in Chatwood to pitch only where you would consider bringing in a position player to pitch.

I dunno. I might be tempted to bring the position player in before Chatwood right now. I remember the halcyon days of ace reliever Darwin Barney. Or the secret weapon Mike McCoy

You are right, I was going to put that in that post, but the other thought in my head took precedence. Wasn't Mathis a go to for a bit?

It feels like as fans we are seeing the team having to try to figure out how to beat the opponents while being sabotaged from within by Montoyo.

The weird thing is that it seems like after a while he suddenly learns from whatever mistake he was making, only to turn around and commit a brand new boneheaded error somewhere else. When he first took over as manager we got on him for stuff like lineup construction. Then that stopped being an issue and it became about substitutions and playing time splits. Then it was ridiculous commitments to bunting and ineffectual small-ball tactics. Then that went away and now he's gone all in on dumbass pen deployment. It's like you can't plug up one hole in his faulty strategy without another one springing a leak.

He pitched two appearances (each an inning), facing 11 batters and surrendering 4 hits and a walk for a total of 2 runs.

Still better than Chatwood.

If Hatch and Murphy are ready to go they need to cut Edwards and Chatwood.

I'd keep Chatwood for now and put him in the mop-up/low leverage role just to see if he can get back whatever groove he was in for the first 6 weeks of the season.

But yeah, Edwards can go. He hasn't been good for like 3 years (though he barely pitched the last two)
