Charlie was definitely at fault for that stupid bunt play. Brings in a pinch hitter, for some reason, to bunt, which was fine in that situation, but kept the bunt on 3 times straight with the tigers corner infielders 15 feet away. That's horrible managing.

If you were bunting in front of one of our all-stars then fine, but you were bunting in front of Randall so... IMO, that wasn't "fine".

I mean the team has done that a lot this year. Eventually it comes back to bite you in the ass.

If it gets to the 9th and they've only scored 1 run and we need to rely on Charlie to manage like a big leaguer....game over.

That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be blamed.

Montoyo managing an average roster would be 20 games under .500. The quality of the roster already “takes it out of his hands” to the tune of being 5-6 games over.

I hate Montoyo. I want him fired yesterday. That I place more blame tonight on the Jays inept offence isn't an endorsement of Charlie in any way shape or form.

The players struggling is a reality. It just exposes Charlie when he can’t hide behind the quality of his roster anymore.

I wanted someone to pickup Ray. Clutch hit for your ace. Nobody stepped up on offence. It happens.

They need to upgrade 3B and the bullpen, plus trade Grichuk.

But firing Montoyo has to be priority #1.

I worry they will waste another year upgrading the bullpen and filling holes and leave Montoyo to mismanage the team out of contention. They need to do it right and demand competency from a manager. We don't even need a top hire just anyone who won't lose dozens of games due to sheer stupidity.

Defence cost them that game.
Passed ball/wild pitch. Terrible throw to the plate, terrible throw to first, take your pick.

And Montoya should be fired, is there a great candidate out there to replace him?
Doesn't seem to happen as often in Baseball.

Yeah, that has to be their immediate focus. The roster can be elite level but it won’t matter if you have a WOAT level manager.

I can safely say Montoyo is the worst coach I’ve ever seen in any sport in terms of competency (others have been worse for serious off-field issues obviously).

And I’m an Oilers fan who’s been through Dallas Eakins FFS.

Problem is the shills at Sportsnet won't say anything. I've seen it happen in a lot of sports where you have an incompetent coach proped up by the media. Only reason someone like Travis Green still has a job when the Canucks are consistently in the bottom of the league in important metrics.
I gave up any hope of Sportsnet calling out Montoyo's stupidity last postseason when he yanked Shoemaker after three great innings, and the first batter Ray faced hit a triple and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Unbelievably, Axford and someone else on the panel claimed Montoyo's decision worked to "perfection."

In that situation you had a crack at a sac fly or one of the two hitters getting a hit. You take that chance. What didnt make sense was forcing that bunt after the first strike. The tigers had the corners way in, you should swing for contact at that point. That's the high percentage play. Almost nobody is going to catch a ball at 100mph exit velocity from 15 feet away.
