I thought Abramov was one of the best players vs Sweden, if not the best player. He will be missed. If we are forward short, may be Chayka can play forward for one game.
LOL That must be a hemisphere thing. Abramov is good and was good. Nobody questioned that ever. But he clearly wasn't near the level of the top line.

It appears that they have caught a really good break in the seeding. I was surprised to see that the IIHF website projects that, if both teams win in the QF, then two No. 1 ranked teams, Canada and the United States, would play each other in the Semi-Final round, while No. 2 Group rank Russia would play No.3 Group rank Sweden in the other Semi-Final. I never paid close attention, but I thought, in theory, that they would always try to reward the higher ranked team by seeding them against a lower-ranked crossover team. I believe that Sweden's loss yesterday was largely owing to fatigue from back-to-back games against top teams, but if we had the choice, we would probably rather go up against Sweden or Finland than against Canada.
Obviously that was the first thing I looked up. Before I read about reseeding. Anyway, you have to beat all of them to win.

All of this math is confusing me. What happens if Finland wins, while the other favorites prevail in the QF?

Hopefully Chinakhov can return. Offense starts to look thin without him and now Abramov, putting a lot of pressure on that top line to produce.

Rumor has it Chinakhov was skating today. I still don't think he will play tomorrow, but definitely a good sign.

Here is the final standing used for re-seeding:
Canada -12
USA - 9 (GD+20)
Finland -9 (GD+8)
Russia -8

So, in your scenario it would be Russia-Canada and USA-Finland

He hasn't been scoring a lot of points, but Ponomarev has looked pretty good to me. Battles hard for pucks, though you could say that about a lot of the Russian team.

I feel like we got to barely see Chinakhov's style in the games he played. The team was trying to outpass their opponents in transition and get fancy from the outside, and those are the things that Yegor Chinakhov is not particularly good at. He is a serious threat taking a stretch pass and driving the net, or going hard on the forecheck and forcing turnovers. In the last game, the Russians started doing those things and outworked Sweden with those tactics. They'd be even better if Chinakhov was there because he is excellent at that game.

Does he normally stickhandle and wander out so much? He almost got burned by the Czechs and if I'm a defenseman I'd hate to have an erratic goalie who's not really predictable and would just go out for a skate. Sure he's Dominik Hasek/ Marty Turco like in terms of talent but you can only get lucky so many times.
I think that's part of his personality. He is very alpha. Maybe sometimes this will lead to some overconfident plays. But I think in the long run he will figure it out and his active game will be a huge asset. He is stil only 18.

As usual, agree to disagree. Even Shevchenko had him in his poll of top players for the game and he scored 2nd or 3rd. You are entitled to your won opinion of course.

Yeah they have it bracketed on the website but the bracket isn't being followed right to the final.

Off the IIHF website on how the Semi's work this year. Essentially all 8 teams have been seeded and the top seed that wins will play the lowest seed that wins a quarter.

Good explanation! Russia lost the opportunity to win the Group outright when they gave up a goal on a scrum in the crease very late in the game. That, unfortunately, is the price of not clearing the puck.

Hopefully Abramov and Chinakhov are all back and ready for the semis.

Unless any upsets happen, it’s looking like we’re playing USA

Outch! Quoting Shevchenko should be below any hockey fan.

Nope, you have me all wrong. My type? I’m a type now? Canada won the summit series even though they came into it overweight and out of shape. Even your vaulted Soviet system lost out to these overweight slugs.
Bobby Clarke breaking a guy's leg with a dirty play had nothing to do with that. And that was nearly 50 years ago.

He can pretty disrespectful towards opposing teams though, I dislike how he has been commenting about Germany in particular.
it's not disrespect, it's a style, people who take offense of it, just don't get it. But then again, everyone today gets offended about everything.

Well, that's how disrespect often starts, "oh, it's just a joke", but it gets ingrained and becomes more "normal", thus leading to poor culture. This is unfortunate that he is allowed to make such comments as a "highly ranked" hockey journalist.

It is not only about disrespect towards opposing team, but also about disrespect towards his colleagues, even from the same newspaper. And what is the saddest part, he is taken as a role model to younger hockey journalists.

It's a matter of preference I guess, he is a very knowledgeable expert, does a lot for the game of hockey, with his Telegram Channel and YouTube channel. I have no issue with his manner of broadcasting information and he constantly bashes HC Rostov. If someone finds it offensive, don't watch it.

Maybe it's because of silly "journalists" like him that the Russian team can't get their s*** together vs. Germany, for eg. What is he doing now after Russia's "comfortable" "razgrom"-win over Germany?

Shevchenko is not even Russian. He is like that moldovan Ovi hater who always pretended to be a Russian journalist except he is from Kharkov or something along those lines. Not so sure what made him "Russian hockey expert". Russia is very thin on real hockey specialists.

As far as team Russia, it is bad. Poorly coached. This game against Germany was as bad as against Czechs except Czechs are just better finishers. Very inconsistent, poor tactics, lots of useless shot attempts. The team doesn't look like it has good hockey IQ. Low scoring is a huge problem. I don't think I have seen team Russia to miss so many shots. I don't know which Soviet style Larionov is trying to build, it looked more like Varnakov coaching from several years ago. Likely loss in the semis and possibly in the bronze game.
