I actually love the last 5 minutes of Austria game. This kind of intensity is what is needed to beat top opponents. If they maintain the intensity and make those plays they did in the last 5 minutes they have a chance against Sweden who is on insane winning streak in round robin games.

As expected, this game vs Austria did not show much new. It did show that they couldnt really score when they wanted to, even against Austria. When they needed to 'answer' in 2nd - nothing happened.

They are also not drawing penalties which means they are not forcing the opponent to foul by getting into dangerous positions with the puck

We would have scored more with Chinakhov, because his shot is exactly what works in games like this, but I didn't like our game as well.

Conspiracy theory - what if Professor is really a sophisticated professor of mind games who knew all alone that both Austria and Czech games are not worth showing everything in order to come to the sudden death games without showing its true strength? I am still puzzled by team Russia throughout three games. The best game, even though not entirely satisfying, came against the best opponent, team USA. Team USA has some of the best talent at the tournament with Zegras looking like the best player of the tournament but Russia managed to control him and others enough not to lose the game? What if we havent seen anything? We may find out some of it tonight.

Well, it certainly is time to show up today because if we lose, it’s very likely we will play Canada in the quarters, we win and we play Germany

That would be something.

Isn't it a contradiction, though, that he berates the Soviet system every time he gets the opportunity to, and yet now he's trying to bring back those elements? It just doesn't make sense.

He is a nasty man. He should be thankful to the system that developed him. No doubt to be ingratiating to the press over here. All he cares about is his bank balance, his profile just like his daughters. Give me Krutov, Makarov and the other quietly spoken players.

Loved period 1 by Russia, not so much everything else. After they got the lead they started playing passive hockey too much. Podkolzin was a beast, Askarov made some good stops. Abramov is a good forward but limited, could have made several additional great passes but chose to shoot. All in all I am still not quite sure what to make of it, we can still win it, it does look like all top teams play at similar level so it is possible.

Well, we did defeat two of the three best teams and lost by a goal to the third one.
I let the Czech loss slide as a fluke now.

Hopefully Chinakhov is back for the quarters but I’m up to give Abramov just as much ice time again, the guy is not scared of creative individual plays and we are lacking that

Russia was done in by the penalties in the 2nd. They looked to be dominating the Swedes for the most part, which isn't easy to do. I don't know how many times they blew by the Swedish D on the outside. Surprising, as I thought the Swedish d was a strong point. The tying goal by Sweden was very lucky. Nothing you can do about that.

All in all a very good performance, but room for improvement if they can stay out of the box. I think their speed and physicality is better than any other team's in the tournament except Canada's, and they are more skilled than some think. If Askarov comes up big, or someone else beats Canada they can win this tournament. They seem to be a team that plays for each other, and have got their crap game out of their system against the Czechs.

I think we can all agree that it was nice to see Russia dictate the game and force Sweden to scramble for survival in the end.

They still need to fix penalties and some defensive screw ups.

Congrats Russia, big win.

Figured you guys would regroup and get better after the Czech loss.

Dominant first period, penalty trouble in the second period, pretty even third period.

Thought Russia looked stronger 5 v 5 and made the most of your PP opportunities.

The Swedish streak has been slain.

Had my doubts about this game but Team Russia actually looked pretty good. Perhaps Larionov is slowly getting the "taste" of things and some of his adjustments are starting to work. It seems, too, that the team is no longer trying to shoot from the blue line like they did vs. the Czechs. Next are the quarterfinals - no opponent should be taken lightly. Good luck to the boys in the Playoff round!

Very good game last night by Russia. The Professor had his team prepared from the first puck drop.

I'm also liking that Marat Khusnutdinov kid. One hell of a motor on that guy. It's a shame he got drafted by the Wild.

Broberg is playing injured. He already missed a game after looking dominant in the first game of the tournament.
