I'd like a defenseman, but I'm leaning more toward Wallstedt. Kings are stacked at C, have some really promising wingers, and have a couple good defenseman. We don't have a top tier goalie prospect. This should most likely (and hopefully) be the highest pick we have in the next 10 years. A harbinger of Stanley Cup winners is a very good, homegrown goaltender developed through the system. Look at the recent winners -
Vasilevskiy - drafted by TB.
Binnington - drafted by St. Louis.
Grubauer/Holtby - drafted by Washington.
Murray/Fleury - drafted by Pittsburgh.
Crawford - drafted by Chicago.
QUICK - drafted by LA.
Thomas - basically a Boston product for his entire career. He's an outlier and an amazing story. Finally a starter at 32, won 2 Vezina's, and lead Boston to a Cup and won the Conn Smythe (1 of 4 Americans to win it alongside Quick). Never give up on your dreams!
Niemi - undrafted but again started off as a Chicago product.
Fleury - the most highly regarded goalie prospect in my lifetime, a top 5 goalie in my book, and future Hall of Famer. Drafted #1 overall by Pittsburgh! We may never see this again.
Osgood - drafted by Detroit. Hasek split but Osgood was the guy for the run.
Giguère - bounced around, but again, basically a Ducks product.
Ward - drafted by Carolina.
Khabibulin - trade.
Brodeur - drafted by New Jersey, another top 5 goalie in my book. The only non-Kings player jersey I own!
Hasek - trade.
Summary - if we want to win another Cup, history says we need to draft and develop a stud goaltender, preferably in the first round like many of the names above. The trends above don't lie. I may look into the past too much, but most of the players who have won, and especially won multiple times, were drafted and developed by the same team, many in the first round. The Kings can develop goalies as good as any team in the league.
tl;dr - Kings lack of a standout goaltending prospect is their biggest flaw in my mind, let's fix it Friday.
