If that’s your metric for ‘successful draft’ then Guenther wouldn’t have moved the needle either.

I encourage you to investigate the player a little bit more. There’s a reason he’s often compared to the best of the best offensive d-men.

Yup, I get that, it’s the norm for defenseman, and guys like Hughes and Doughty are the exceptions. But having someone who projects like a 20 goal scorer at 21 years old would have made me happier. But whatever, we won’t know about a defenseman until he is at least 21 years old and has a shot in camp.

I'm sure they did their homework on all the prospects to get to know them better, including talking to former alumni.

Mike Stothers also coached Clarke for Canada's U-18 team this year to help Canada win gold.
