Once you get in the playoffs, you are a contender. Period.
"Anything can happen" which never does. Montreal would not have made the playoffs if this wasn't a fantasy hockey season. With this logic, all the teams that have gotten embarrassed in the playoffs this season were all contenders. They were not. There's maybe 4 teams that could legit win it all. The rest are pretenders, not contenders.

On a basic logical level, the playoffs are 16 teams contending for the Cup. If you're one of the 16, you are a contender.

Whether or not the quality of your roster makes you a favorite is a different question.

On a basic logic level, the NHL is 31, soon to be 32, teams contending for the Cup. What’s the difference?

a quick look at current NHL playoff situation, with only 2-4 games left in 2nd round:

3 First Place teams out, the 4th(Avs) facing elimination
3 Second Place teams out, the 4th(VGK) not in yet
Yes, one of those "the 4th"'s, either 1st or 2nd place team, will reach SemiFinals

1 3rd place team in 3rd round,
1 4th place team in 3rd round,
one more 3rd or 4th place team (Isles or Bruins) will reach 3rd round,

2022 is a much, much better draft. Giving up a first from that draft and the 15OA from this one just to move up several spots seems very short sighted.
I was stating trade the 2022 1st for a Center such as Lindholm, Hertl, Larkin, or .... Eichel.

And I am not saying trade to move up several spots from 15, just a few if it meant securing Raty.

@GAGLine see above regarding the centers

My thought behind trading the 1st next year, lottery protected, is that if this team adds another quality center, adds the depth to the bottom 6, and the kids take yet another step in development, our pick is going to be lower than where it is now at 15. And as deep as that draft may be, are we going to let a pick in the 18-22 range hold us back from getting the Center we need down the middle to compliment Zib for next year and act as insurance in case we move on from him?

Raty was once thought to be a possible Top 3 or Top 5 pick for this class, but had a down year. So yeah I see good value there in securing him even if you have to trade up to 11-14 to get him.

The 2012 Los Angeles Kings come to mind.

There is certainly also a big lottery element added to winning in the POs. Even the sweeps, it’s close games. Winnipeg had no business beating EDM in the first games IIRC, then EDM folded at the end. Both Washington and STL won a G7 in OT in the first round when they won cups, IIRC. They can play those POs 10 times over in an alternative universe and they certainly don’t win the cup even 5 times each.

You can’t do much more than to put yourself in the running. I also think that it’s essential for a franchise to bot panic if you only come close. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Elite Prospects 2021 NHL Draft Scouting Meeting Pre-U18 top 48
2 1/2 hours.
Enjoy.:)

There's a lot of takes that seem way out of touch (like Eklund going No. 1), but they do bring up a great conversation on the topic. Not a bad video, but a lot to be desired.

One thing I did like, though, is that most of them have Wallstedt in their top 5...

Edit: Continuing to listen, their Euro writer/scout saying that Lysell has a ton of off-ice issues, including bullying teammates and not feeling respected. The other scout saying that that stuff could be overblown. Interesting...

Yeah, I caught that too about Lysell.
I was thinking if someone loves TDA then their gonna love Lysell. Maybe the team can bring back DeAngelo he can room with Lysell.
We can than pickup a later first and draft Zachary L’Heureux and turn ourselves into the 1980’s Oakland Raiders (lol).
On a serious note, if we can’t get Wahlstedt, Lucius, Raty or McTavish at 15 then trade the pick.

Yeah, Lysell is known to have been a bit of a headcase, similar to Gunler. Interesting to see how that affects his draft stock. Forced his way out of Göteborg basically and moved to Luleå last season.

However, in Luleå he seemed to be back on track. I guess it depends on who scouts are listening to.

If you knew which teams were gonna get embarrassed before they got embarrassed then I'd love to hear how you plan to spend those chips you just won.

The 4 Stanley Cup Semifinalists finished the regular season 1st (tied), 8th (tied), 12th and 18th in the regular season standings.

Fantasy season or not, that’s pretty random and I’ve seen several higher ranked teams get embarrassed in the last month.

The fact is, if you are in you are a contender.

and even though the Rangers didn't win the cup, their runs in 2014 and 2015 were full of barely making it through

Coming back from down 3-1 to Pittsburgh? Every series going 7 games? It was crazy

Yeah, no. The fantasy season this year threw everything into disarray.

The top four teams in the league were COL, VGK, CAR and FLA. TBL finished 8th OA while sitting a top 5 player in the game. The top team in the Canadian division finished 6OA, and lost a top player minutes into the tournament.

It was Impossible for the top four teams in the league to make it to the final four because of how the brackets were setup. It was easier for lesser teams to make it farther this year than in a normal year.
