One of the thought processes before this draft was that you really need to keep the flow of talent coming --- especially knowing you're likely to have some really expensive contracts in Fox, Laf, Kakko, etc. So there was the belief that you want to make sure you still have a chance to cycle in support talent at reasonable costs.

Heading into this draft, the previous mindset was that the Rangers were going to keep stockpiling future support talent (an approach they really focused on in the 2020 draft) and that they didn't inherently need the most individually skilled player available. To some extent, I don't think that mindset will change too much.

Right now, one of the things that has me leaning toward the belief that they will keep the pick is that I don't know if they are going big game hunting via a trade right now. A lot of the types they could be looking at are probably of the depth and compliment variety --- not necessarily a guy you move a top prospect for or a first round pick.

That's not to say it won't happen. But you might be looking at a scenario where Stome and or Buch goes for multiple pieces and a different roster composition. In other words, you might be more likely to see Buch and Strome traded for less offensively inclined players for the middle six, with guys like Chytil and Kakko stepping up into roles, than you are likely to see a first and a prospect bundled for the same type of players.
I would lmao if we won the lottery again. But if that improbable happens, then that pick might have a little more clout as far as getting an impact player.

To follow-up on my previous post, here are some noticeable differences between CSB and Bob's sampling of scouts from a few weeks back. Some conversations I have are much, much closer to what Bob reported on. For example:

CSB has McTavish second for NA Skaters. McKenzie has him 11th overall.

Johnson is ranked third by CSB, ahead of a bunch of names that I've consistently heard as being higher on teams lists and reflected in Bob's rankings.

Guenther is ranked second by Bob, and that reflects a trend I saw where teams had him ranked significantly higher than third party observers. CSB has him sitting fifth among North American skaters.

CSB has Othmann 8th. McKenzie doesn't even have him in the top 20.

CSB has Wyatt Johnson at 16, just behind Pinelli (24th on McKenzie's list and a potential riser beyond that in talking with others). He's 52nd according to McKenzie's survey.

Colton Dach is 19, ahead of names like Dean and L'Heureux. Those guys were surveyed at 27 and 32 for McKenzie. Dach was surveyed somewhere around a third round slot.

There are always differences --- but these significant. I really can't wait to see where Bob's list goes from here.
Looks like the Rangers pick is just out of range of the players we like. Hopefully we can trade up, if necessary.

There are likely to be several names that have come up that will indeed be on the board at 15.

Now, how much of that has changed/will change under Drury is TBD.

But if the draft were held today, I think I'd be happy to come away with Pinelli at 15. He's my cross-section pick for the team in the sense that he could be among the BPAs at that spot in the draft, I think the potential and upside is very good, and he also happens to be fit an organizational need.

So to that point and maybe this cannot be answered, are the likes of Raty and Svechkhov now less likely with Bobrov gone?

I'd by lying if I said I had a good handle on that right now. There's a lot of moving parts within the organization. Right now people are speculating on what they think Drury might do, but obviously there's not a concrete profile at this time.

For example, there's a belief Drury is more likely to be okay with trading down.

There's also a belief that Drury is more inclined to lean toward risers than reclamations.

If true that potentially impacts not only the first round, but a round like the second or third where the Rangers would typically take flyers on guys who had fallen a bit (Robertson, Day, Duclair, Sauer, Cuylle, etc.)

I wouldn't say that Raty and Svechkov are less likely because Bobrov is gone, so much as Raty may not be as much in the conversation based on the whole riser/faller philosophy --- if true.

Some of the names that have floated around for a bit are all guys who have been risers. Considering the Rangers have liked some of them before they were risers, I would say their cases have grown stronger. McTavish fits that profile (though he's probably climbing a bit out of reach). But guys like Pinelli and Svechkov could be right in the crosshairs.

Other guys like Raty or L'Heureux, maybe not as much.

Seems 'nucks won't sign Ethan Keppen by tomorrow, so back in draft, then maybe UFA

Had poor D+1 season, then OHL never played this past

Any insights guys?

I'm not a scout or anything, but from the limited amount of players I've seen, I've been really, really impressed with Francesco Pinnelli. He's the one I want at 16.
Was hoping that McTavish and/or Sillinger would drop. Then I’ve got Svechkov. Then Raty/Pinelli. Going back and forth there.

Traded down with DET, 15 & 143 for 28, 36, 47, 52

28. C Fedor Svechkov (Lada Togliatti, VHL)- probably unrealistic that he'd fall this far, Pinelli was the other option on the board
36. RW Matthew Samoskevich (Chicago Steel, USHL)
47. C Oliver Kapanen (KalPa U20, U20 SM-sarja)
52. LD Jack Peart (Fargo Force, USHL)
64. RD Roman Schmidt (US NTDP)
79. C Jayden Grubbe (Red Deer Rebels, WHL)
99. LW Justin Janicke (US NTDP)
105. LD Brent Johnson (Sioux Falls Stampede, USHL)
111. G Alexei Kolosov (Dinamo Minsk, KHL)
175. LW Lucas Forsell (Farjestad BK J20, J20 Nationell
207. C Nick Degrazia (Sudbury Wolves, OHL)
