This is where I'm confused. Saying he's not a part of the longterm plan is fine (in fact I would agree). But you said you would attach a 3rd to him in exchange for a 6th. That's literally a Tallon expansion draft move. Actually, Vatrano had a better year than Smith in 2017.This is exactly how I feel about Vatrano.
It's not "hate" or "cutting him up." It's just stating what I see as fact. The guy is often a ghost and is going to get a raise soon.
Our former GM would have seen this as an opportunity to pay up before the time came, blocking a younger player. Our new GM will get someone better or let a young guy step into a role.
If you're trading a guy who scored 20+ goals (over an 82 game pace) for 3 straight years and is making next to no money at 2.5 million, the return better be multiple mid round picks or one of the dmen they take.
