Are you just going to overlook the fact that Michigan is providing the kid with a $70,000 a year scholarship, room and board, meals and books? Pretty sure that school has some influence here.
I am not over looking it. I just think it is irrelevant for a kid that is going to be playing pro hockey this time next year in all likelihood. Are all NCAA players going to be blocked off from going to the WJC or is this for whatever reason an isolated issue that will only effect Owen Power? That would be slightly odd. Like I said if it is a personal decision then more power to him but the schools in no way should be influencing or trying to make the decision for him. If he wants to go he should be able to go no questions asked.

Issue is the length of the Canada camp. Usually it's a week not a month then tournament is a week or so. Players then miss a few games (2-4 games) with their college team and then are back. With the pandemic the NCAA season is consolidated and with the required quarantine protocols at NCAA schools Power would miss 50+ days of school and a large chunk of their season (could possibly miss 75% of season). He would miss at least 8 out of their 10 first games up until Dec. 9th. and then more up until the end of the WJC which is Jan 5th then has to come back to mandatory quarantine at school before resuming. Power could miss 20 games of NCAA hockey playing huge minutes vs 5 games at WJC playing minimal minutes if he even makes the team.

I get all of that and if Power and his family decide that playing those games is more valuable then absolutely. I am just pushing back on the idea that the school should have any say. If Power wants to go tryout for the junior team then there should be nobody standing in his way at all. Plus as I said earlier Power is a top 10 pick in next years draft if he plays 0 games or 100 this season.

I don't think it's quite as drastic as the coach made it out to be. Hockey Canada is apparently cutting the team down significantly after only one week. The odds are that Power is either cut after one week or he's actually on the team. His classes are also apparently zoom classes, so I imagine that he can still get most of those in and I'm sure that Hockey Canada has the pull to bring in top academic resources if asked. I also doubt that Power's hockey development will be significantly hindered practicing with some of the best players in the world of his age group and playing three inter-squad games plus six games against the USports all stars leading up to the tournament itself. The coach moaning about how he needed to help the confidence of players like York and Hughes is funny enough and really doesn't need to be addresses. Even if Power ended up being the 8th defenceman he'd still end up with at least one tournament game and a valuable experience overall.

Overall, I can certainly understand why it would be a negative for Michigan's hockey team, and by extension the coach, if Power goes to the camp. I don't see it as a negative for Power as the coach self-servingly described it, but ultimately Power should be the one to decide.

Totally agree - its a tough situation and Power should do what he thinks is best for his own development. Just pointing out there are two sides to the story.

Yeah I can understand why the coach wouldn't want him to go, my main issue with him is the reasons he put forward. The university doesn't gain anything from Power leaving and yes they do have a financial interest in him.

Great post.

That's a fair point and, if he leaves, the scholarship should be adjusted.

There are 2 sides :

1) Power should have the final say.

2) If Power is going to miss a large chunk of the Michigan season, his scholarship should be adjusted accordingly / paid back.

Plus, if the coach stops Power this year, assuming Power is still at school next year, what's to stop the coach from saying NO in 2021/2022 when Power could be Canada's top D-Man?

There's this story floating around regarding Power and the WJC camp:

Pearson unsure about letting Owen Power go to Canadian National Junior Team Selection Camp

Michigan's coach comes off as either very disingenuous or an idiot.

From the article:

““It’s not the ideal situation,” Pearson said. “I would like to let Owen experience it and go there, but at the same time, I’ve got to look at the overall picture and what’s right for Owen going forward, overall, not just for a two week camp that’s played at Christmas time, but for his overall growth and development and academic interest.””

Playing for Canada against the best junior age players in the world is what is right for Owen going forward.

He’ll be in the NHL in 2021-22 immediately after he’s drafted.

Not sure why Pearson thinks he knows what's "right" for someone he just started coaching.

I wouldn't be sure that Power is one and done in the NCAA, though he certainly could be. Either way, I basically think that the coach is looking out for himself and his team first despite his framing that it's in Power's best interest. It's an understandable position for him to take though he didn't need to go to the media to pontificate on the matter. I'm not going to get hot about this thing unless the coach actually does prevent Power from going.

A coach of a major ncaa program certainly knows what is in HIS best interest when it comes to a player of Powers level, that I don't doubt, and that is having his ass in the line-up as much as possible.

What he knows is in the best interest of every single player I would question, coach of a major ncaa program or not.

Yeah, I mean what does the coach of a major NCAA program know?
If the rolls were reversed and Power was American, you`d want him to play at the WJR's.

The kid and his family will decide. If they feel it is best to stay at school, cool. If he wants to be part of Team Canada, reimburse the scholarship and we'll see him at Christmas.

I'm hoping for the latter.

As usual, great post and spot on.

As for the coach...

I don't like the precedence it sets. What's to stop Pearson from saying "no" next year as well? I'm sure Pearson could find an excuse (that's in Power's "best interest") if Power isn't playing in the NHL in 2021/2022.

Don't let someone else dictate YOUR life. As others have said, Michigan needs Power more than Power needs Michigan.

If Power was American and the U.S. had an early camp, every American hockey fan would be rooting for him to play at the WJR's for Team USA.
