Man those lines are bad.

Dach on the wing is dumb. He's proven to be an NHL capable centerman, and Cozens is definitely the better fit for the wing than he is.

RW Quinn at LW and LW Pelletier at RW seems unnecessary. I'm also skeptical that Suzuki is a better player than Tomasino at RW.

4 deep lines but should have at least one line focused on shutting down the oppositions top players. Something like Holloway-Zary-Krebs/Mercer.

I agree that it looks strange, just as the Drysdale-Byram pairing doesn't seem to make sense. If Dach can competently play centre in the NHL then you'd imagine that qualifies him for a centre spot here regardless of past experience at RW. The coaches have at least seen all of the red and white games though. Ideally you can use pre-tournament games to figure out what works, so the game against Russia should be illustrative. While it's probably for the best that Canada has a relatively weak group this year, a weak group can also hide combinations that aren't working until a real challenge emerges.

Exactly. 5 games to put humpty dumpty together again - let's hope we get pushed before the quarters.

Quinn plays LW as well or better than RW. Shooting from his off wing makes him that much more lethal. Thats where he played in the second half last year. The lines are terrific. 4 deep, the holloway newhook pelletier line is the energy/shut down line. Looking forward to seeing what they can do before I jump to any conclusions. I trust the coaching staff, they know what they are doing. They have had these players for over a month now, likely have a pretty good handle on it.

The Byram - Drysdale pairing is going to be so dominant. Makes alot of sense to me, try thinking Keith - Doughty 2010 stylistically.

We will see when the actual ice time distribution is seen in the games but Byfield being low on the lines is just sad to see

Disappointed that Poulin didn't make the squad. Did he have a weak camp?

He wasn't all that noticeable in the games that were shown and otherwise didn't score a lot.

The issue isn't how they play, it's the players who are left on the other pairings. It seems foolish to put your obvious top two defencemen and puck carriers on the same pairing. The coming games should give us an idea if it is going to work out.

Who do you guys think will be the best Canadian player this tournament?

Probably Dach as players who come from the NHL, particularly those who have been fairly successful, are generally very good at the WJC. I expect good things from Byram and Newhook too.

Why?

He’s still the youngest player on the team again this year.

I do agree that he needs to be more physically engaged and imposing, he just doesn’t have that mean streak in him. Unfortunately for him the Canadian Way requires some nastiness and willingness to be a menace on the forecheck.

We’re all just waiting for him to learn how to impose himself on a game when he’s not scoring he can do a lot of other things which he doesn’t seem to do. Completely understandable why he’s lower on the lineup.

I would have preferred to see Drysdale and Byram split up too for the reasons Slater mentioned but maybe they are seeing something special about them in the practices that suggests such a dominant pair they simply can't and don't want to break them up.

I mean if Lafrieniere didnt perform last year he would have been skewered and criticized. Byfield is the same age Laf was last year at this tournament which he completely dominated in every sense of the word. He might be the youngest on this team but age can not in anyway be an excuse for how he performs or does not perform.

The one thing I worry about the kid is that he hasn't and won't figure out at the higher levels he can't just do what he usually has always done all his life due to his obvious advantages. At this level he needs to have more hunger and be more of a puck hound and battle, if he does that he will soon see his attributes will work just fine here too, but he can't just float around and wait for the puck to come to him in a situation where there is a lot of separation.

Maturity or temperament issue, perhaps both.

If I were a Kings fan I wouldn’t have any panic about Byfield at all.

A lot of guy don’t perform well in their first world juniors. How about Nate MacKinnon? He turned out ok.

It seems to be forgotten that Tourigney said Byfield was one of the best players in practice after the scrimmage games.

No Canada player should come under too much scrutiny for playing a reduced role in this tournament. It’s the deepest team to play in the tournament in a long time.

It's actually his 2nd WJC, but the point still stands.

I'm really looking forward to the exhibition game tomorrow. I don't usually put much stock in Canada's pre-tournament games but this year is obviously quite different. I also think that Russia is probably the most dangerous team in the tournament so it should be a decent barometer of where things are. Very interested in seeing how Canada's goaltenders look and how the skaters look against players who have been playing regularly.
