Did the US and Finland drop out of the tournament?

Russia will be really strong this year as well and has the best goaltender. Nothing is ever guaranteed. I’m hoping for another Canada v Russia Gold medal game as always.

I do like this group and they can absolutely compete for Gold, but games aren’t played on paper.

Is everyone looking forward to watching Canada win the Gold Medal?
Whoa! Slow your roll, dude. I did my own chest-thumping Canada post back there, but saying you have a wicked lineup is NOT the same as guaranteeing Gold. A LOT can happen and it only takes one bad game. Plus there are still some pretty good teams out there and certainly some game stealing goalies. We’re still going to have to work our asses off to win this thing.

Are you trying to suggest the US and Finland have a better shot at Gold then Canada?

Obviously nothing is guaranteed or else we wouldn't have a need to actually play the games.

But to believe Canada is anything but a heavy Gold medal favorite this year, would just be acting foolish. They haven't been this deep in a very long time.

Does anyone else think Kirby Dach has a chance at having the greatest performance in tournament history ?

He's 6'4", well over 200lbs, one full year of NHL experience and at times he looked like the best player on his team with the Blackhawks in the playoffs.

Those are some high expectations... I'm gonna say no.

There have been some pretty ridiculous performances in the past. I dont know about best ever. I dont think there will be a team that can handle him though. He will dominate.

We'll face good goal-tending in that medal round ; Russia , USA and Sweden all have goalies that can steal a game.
USA vs RUSSIA right off the hop Christmas day should be good.

Considering Peter Forsberg put up 7 goals and 31 points in 7 games I'm gonna go ahead with no. I could see Dach getting over 10 though with a performance similar to Laf last year.

Damn I didn't know about Forsberg's performance lol

In Dach's case I think 15 pts isn't out of reach.

Honestly, if everything goes Dach's way I could consider his ceiling as 20ish points. Somewhat optimistic/unrealistic, but in a group with Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany who all have weaker teams this year, Dach has the potential to do very well. As a high end number, maybe 3 PPG in those 3 games and 2 points in the Finland game. And possibly 2 PPG in the medal round, leaving him with 17 points total.

Canada has an exceptionally deep roster this year. Good for them. That said, the U.S. also has a very good team with a ton of high draft picks. They also have a top notch goalie in Knight who is every bit as good as Askarov. I wouldn't be surprised if Canada wins gold but I don't think it's going to be a cake walk. If it is I'll have to endure endless Canadian gloating and grand standing.....:naughty:

IIRC to our discussions on the Panthers board about the WJC tournament, the Finnish people don't seem too confident in Finland's team this year. I believe they said it should be a weaker year for them.

Yeah, Dach has no realistic chance of matching Forsberg (or Bure) but there's no shame in that. You almost never see 19 year olds that good actually play in this tournament, and in Forsberg's case he had an ideal situation with elite linemates with strong chemistry heading into the tournament plus some patsies to beat up on.

Those are interesting. Surprising to see Mercer in that spot. The continued pairing of Drysdale and Byram is still confusing. Plenty will change as things progress though.

Dach is well over 200lbs now?

Did anyone else get 10 points against Japan? I've been trying to find that game but not sure if it was ever televised.

This team also has a pretty wide net in terms of where the players come from. 8 provinces (all but Manitoba and New Brunswick, four from Atlantic Canada total) plus the Yukon. Not bad. I'd guess that they've never had players from 9 provinces/territories, and it happened pretty naturally.

I don't imagine so, as only Naslund was even in the vicinity of Forsberg for the tournament points-wise. I do believe that it was televised though. It's also not like Forsberg only beat up on Japan of course. He's far from Kuznetsov in 2012 that way.
