As I have previously mentioned, the reinforcements are at the moment, the 6 players returned from NJ.

Stillman arrived injured and has yet to skate.

Mukh has a long journey to get here and the Comets play Tuesday, May 10. It's already May 5. He will have to arrive on skates. Forget jet lag. If the Comets don't dispose of the 1st opponent, he will have come a long way simply to visit beautiful downtown Utica.

Hope he finds it to be a wonderful place because if he doesn't make the Devils, word is he has no interest playing in the AHL and NJ won't press the issue, so back to the KHL again. IF he finds Utica to be a very welcoming place in a short visit maybe he changes his mind, but on a fixed salary ELC, he makes more moolah in the KHL even if it's in rubles. Money talks.

I'm just glad they have their basic team back together.
Studenic would have been a valuable physical force that the Comets are short on.
Schnarr was playing well when traded (13G/13A/26Pts/43GP) and filled a valuable spot at center. His absence + Gauthier's injury has left the team weak up the middle and on the PK. Normally teams are only as good as their strength up the middle.

The Comets were lacking at center to begin with. There are no centers in Utica meant to become key pieces in NJ, meaning the team was center weak, wing strong to begin with. The non prospect acquisitions all arrived with a C after their name.

Gauthier turned out to be a very valuable #3, but of late had been playing #2, taking faceoffs with all of the lines, killing penalties, and playing against the other team's best.

Gambardella has been a wing period and a very good one, but without a lot of offense. Therefore, he has been all over in regards to lines 1-4.

Flynn is far better on the wing.

Schmelzer has become sort of a fill in the blank every night. Sometimes at center, some nights at RW, and some of those nights he was center Talvitie's RW.

It was obvious from the get-go that Dineen wanted Deleo on the wing and he was very productive, but as the season moved on, Schnarr was traded, injuries hit the center position, and he was forced back into the middle and became the #1 more often than not. He has performed there just as well as he has on the wing. He has turned out to be the best non-prospect period.

Schnarr was a prospect center and is gone.

Talvitie is a prospect center who will likely never be anything more than an AHL player and has basically been the Comets 4th line center until recent injuries have moved him up and down but #4 has been his bread and butter.

Thompson has been a center in his career, but it's obvious the Devils want him on the RW where he has played most of his limited nights here, but he has also been a center.

Clarke got a taste in the middle, but has primarily been a bottom 6 RW. He hasn't shown the kind of play that makes him a valuable player to the Devils' future.

Sticking brand newbies into the lineup without any kind of chemistry whatsoever usually doesn't produce much for awhile, especially without even having a chance to practice with those they need to be developing that chemistry. The Comets will have to advance along through the playoffs in order for that to occur. The 6 guys who have rejoined the club had already established said chemistry and will meld right back into the mix.

Let's say Shakir arrives and is inserted into the lineup at his normal LW position. Deleo, Zetterlund, Foote, Gambardella, and Greer are the LWs unless Deleo (likely) is slotted in at Center. The LW is set without him. Put him at LW in place of Gambardella.

Now we move Gambardella to RW since he has pretty much played them both with regularity. Now add Holtz, Thompson, and Flynn/Clarke/Stillman.

Centers:
Deleo
-Gauthier- Flynn
Schmelzer
Talvitie

If a regular gets scratched it would between Flynn and Clarke and at this stage of the game my bet would be Clarke. He would join Laberge and then all of the ECHL additions to whom I would add McGrath (26GP/0Pts/67 PIM). The college boys, Halonen and injured VanWhye have not impressed enough to date to replace a regular. If on e of them gets penciled it it would be Halaonen (2G/1A/3Pts/12GP). VanWhye has only played 1 game. Stillman is a coach's choice, but he, like Shakir, would have to replace one of the regulars.
Thanks for that preview for those of us who don't get to see the games and live vicariously through the local fans. If I'm reading your report correctly you have Shakir Mukhamadullin as a LW? He's a Left Defender if you want to tweak your report, which was really helpful to see how the team shakes out. I was very curious about the center position so thanks for that. I wonder if Thompson wouldn't make a good center. His game seems versatile enough when I have watched him.

Two playin rounds have ended. A third could end tonight. A fourth starts and two more could end tomorrow. Two Division Semifinals also start tomorrow and involve none of the playin winners.

Thanks for pointing out my error. I have fixed it. Not super acquainted with the Devils past picks playing all over the world yet. I'm working on it. I do know the guys that have been in town for all or most of their 72-game schedule.

Shakir plays LD.

Yeah, I fixed that. Thanks for the shot in the brain.

Should be a great series with Rochester. They split the 12 games in the regular season and being just 2 hours apart there should be plenty of opposition fans in each barn.

Tonight I learned from the Colorado Eagles pbp Kevin McGlue that after ten fighting majors AHL players get a one game suspension. The regular season fights carry over into the playoffs. Andreas Englund punched a guy after he was tackled down to the ice and there was concern that he might get called for his tenth fighting major. He didn't.

Greer has three fighting majors remaining before suspension. McGrath has two.

Greer can play hard and "gritty" (not sure that word really expresses what I really mean) without dropping the gloves.

McGrath doesn't have much more of value in his game than fighting. If they lose him for a game, so be it. That's of course assuming he ever gets in a game considering the lineup Dineen can ice.

However, if the boss has not informed these guys as to what's ahead and therefore they better grow some hair, they won't be there long. The majority of the Comets have not played the game with much physicality. The hitting will occur almost every time they touch the puck. They have not fared well when teams have taken the body hard on the forecheck and while defending in their own end all game long. Hitting takes a toll quickly on those who don't/can't return it in kind. They will have to do more than poke check, wave sticks at the puck carrier on his way by, or take the circle route behind him after he goes by. Rochester feasts on sloppy play and turnovers in any area on the ice and the Comets are notorious for own end giveaways, bad passing in all 3 zones, and poor zone entries resulting in odd man rushes against.

The Amerks coach, Seth Appert, is well aware of the game the Comets play and he has developed a system that makes them very hard to play against and Buffalo has beefed up their lineup considerably.

Between Rochester and Belleville, I would much prefer the Amerks as a playoff opponent. Belleville is the most physical team that the Comets played against and their game plan is to finish every check with the goal of wearing down the opposition. Rochester is more similar to the Comets, relying on skill to drive the offense. Also like the Comets the Amerks defense is prone to ugly turnovers leading to goals against.

This should be a good series and I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the full five games. How well the goaltenders play could untimely be the difference. I'm not a big Aaron Dell fan even though he can put some good games together.

I don’t know how many “big Aaron Dell fans” there are in world.

Rochester lost rookie Linus Weissbach for the Semifinal due to be taken out by Scott Sabourin. He couldn't get his feet under him when he was being helped off the ice. Weissbach is week to week. Could have easily been Holtz. Belleville held AHL ROTY Jack Quinn pointless by targeting him and the other Amerks rookies. Krebs and Peterka didn't score, but chipped in five assists between the two. Ruotsalainen and the third best regular season PP means Dineen will have to stress discipline. Jankowski has been a difference maker with one goal and his possession play. Trade deadline acquisition Mark Alt has been a decent shut down guy on the blue line. Mattias Samuelsson is still out. Dell has been serviceable over two games making big key saves to keep the Amerks in it. Rochester came back from a 3-0 deficit in game one to win Game 1 in OT and survived blowing a 3-1 lead in Game 2 to win again in OT. UPL is still out from the collision with Schmelzer. Rochester is on a three game winning streak starting with the 8-1 drubbing of the Comets in a potential elimination game coming off a three game losing streak.

The schedule favors Rochester with three days off between Games 1 and 2. If the Amerks win Game 1 they keep their momentum and get to rest any banged up players for Game 2. If the Comets win that's three days off to keep it going. Game 3 is the second of a b2b with an early start on the road. Whoever loses Game 2 will have less than 24 hours to adjust and break that momentum.

I am very happy to not have to see Sabourin. He is a danger to seriously hurt someone every time he is on the ice. Rochester is no push over but I would much rather play them than Belleville.

He can play a regular shift at the AHL level unlike the Comets Patrick McGrath who is useless and doesn't get much ice time. He isn't going to put up big numbers but he can contribute occasionally.
Then it’s fair to roll him out there. I’d still have a guy on my bench who is willing to hit other guys in thr head and neck with their stick and skates if need be so at least the best players on the other team suffer the same fate in retribution if necessary after a cheap shot leading to injury.
