For sure . Speed is so overrated! You don't have to be fast to be successful , the league is full of guys who have average speed. Valardi has average speed, and can makes smart plays. That's all you need. There was a play in the 1st when he was behind the net and got QB the puck in the slot and he shot it wide. That's not a play you need speed for, it was a smart read and generated a scoring chance.
Speed is not overrated....and speed + power + skill is the most deadly combination. I've been in Denver for some time and when Rantanen came up and started playing with Landeskog and MacKinnon, they all had speed, power and skill. I only go to a few AVs games a year and always go to the King ones....usually in the first few rows in the 300s...but one game, was row 7 in the corner...and watching the 3 of them up close is something I will never ever forget...they were this unstoppable force in sync. Defensemen cannot control or contain them. They willed their way around the zone.
McDavid has size, speed, power and skill....of the highest level and that's what makes him the best player in the world.
As you say, speed is not essential to have success...but if you have it, it's the best weapon in tight checking games.
Kupari has elite speed and high skill and has shown he has an emerging power game. He may never be an elite player, but he's certianly
top 6 material,..once he gets it all together. He has a good shot and can finish. (tempted top go with Finnish) And make plays and shots
at top speed. That goal he scored a few games ago - power, poise and nice backhand shot, top shelf. That's big league stuff.
Byfield and Kupari can be much like MacKinnon / Rantanen, maybe a level below them, but I'll take that. They are 19 and 22.
Vilardi has high skill level, good hockey IQ and has a good shot. The 3 of them should stay together. In 2 years, they can all take over as
line 1.
People have asked "what is Kupari's identity?" fair enough. Let him carve it out. I love that he's good defensively and can kill penalties too.
Maybe Byfield and Kupari create a duo identity as well. Byfield said last night that they had never played together, as both are centers.
You know they should only get better together and begin creating chances a few times every game. Players know who Byfield is....but most
don't know anything about Rasmus. Let them find out who he is, as they see his name on his back, as he blows by them.
