GDT: 2021-22 season game 23 LA Kings vs Edmonton Oilers @5:00pm 12/5/21

Kopi doing nothing probably got us a five minute major. Wtf is a point of 4 on 4 when you can run it up with 3 goals.
Because this team isn’t in any sort of playoff push, and is struggling for a team identity & cohesive goal.

Say what you will, but an open can of whoop ass there would have said a hell of a lot more than a worthless run-up on the PP.

Just saw the hit on Kempe. I’d f***ing rip the c off Kopitar’s jersey over that shit. Jesus Christ man, that’s the time you do something instead let me hold you.

Seriously? He's 34, played 1152 games, for 24,252 total minutes, and has 306 PIM's, for an average of 22 per 82 games. Do we not know who Kopitar is by now? Very few of those PIM's are likely for roughing. I would guess probably none of them have been for roughing, but there might have been one or two, back in his younger rambunctious days, who knows. That the Kings are as soft as warm butter is a valid criticism, but to go after Kopitar at this point, for not "doing something" against McDavid of all people, when the only thing that anyone can remember Kopitar ever doing in a physical sense was that one little scuffle against Burrows in a playoff game, we're losing our minds a little bit around here.

I didn’t expect it by any stretch, but he didn’t even hit him with his purse or stick a glove in his face. It’s a valid criticism that the captain saw one of his teammates get hit with a cheap shot and he just held the guy. There’s a code. If a guy like Lias Andersson understands it. Kopitar should absolutely understand it. I would’ve been totally ok with a bearhug take down no punches thrown but at least you show your team I’m willing to back you guys up.

Dropping gloves is worth more than running up the power play and scoring goals against the second best penalty kill and best power play in the league? Alright, I will say what I will, you’re an idiot.

Again, he's been around for 1152 games. This is his 16th season. He has probably hit the posts on his own net in frustration more than he has another human being with his body in his career. Who is the Kopitar you think is out there? Why in the world would he be someone different at 34 years of age? He's not even a bearhug guy. He did that one time when the team was completely geared up and dialed in. He's not doing that on this team in December.

Spezza kneed a guy in the head tonight in retaliation, but he at least had a couple years with 66 and 79 PIM's. Kopitar tops out at 32. One year he had 10 in 79 games. I can't believe we're having this conversation about Kopitar in 2021.

A bit of a self own considering the one time Kopitar actually did do something to Burrows it occurred in a playoff run when we won a Cup.

If you think that a few worthless goals at the end of a meaningless mid season game are what is going to define the future of this franchise, you’re beyond just being an idiot, your irrelevant.

This team needs an identity from its leadership group. First and foremost.

Ok? They also won a Cup when Kopitar went goalless for 2 consecutive playoff series. Which was the conference final, and the Cup final. Why do we complain when he doesn't score goals?

DL also brought in a ton of grit before those Cups. Kopitar has never been that guy. Brown hasn't really been that guy. He used to hit people, but he was never a fighter. Doughty thinks he's that guy, but he's not. Quick probably would be that guy, but he plays goal. That 2012 team was as ready to win as you can get. They went up 3-0 in every series. So I guess anything from here on out that is less than 4 consecutive sweeps is a failure, because nothing can live up to the extreme exception to a rule.

I guess we really are having this conversation. Kopitar, at 34, after well over 1100 games, should be a completely different player than he ever has been, outside of about 5 seconds. Yes, that makes sense. We should be pissed that Kopitar is who he is.

Should he be captain? No. Should he have ever been named captain? No. But he is, and he will be for the next couple years. If the Kings want some grit, they have to find it somewhere else. DL knew that. I don't even know if DL would've drafted Kopitar had he been here in 2005. He's not a DL player. Mike Richards. Mike Ricci. Those are the DL types. Not Anze Kopitar. That grit ain't coming from #11. He's not face washing anyone. He's not bear hugging anyone. He did that one time, when the leaders had this franchise amped up to 1000. That we can't think of even a second example of Kopitar being physical in some way, should say everything we need to know.

You know who the current leadership group is, right? It's the same one that had to have leaders put around it to win anything. The leadership group that matters has either not or barely played a full season yet, or is still in Ontario.

Hockey is f***ing weird, man.

Honestly unless they go on a serious run this was exactly the worst possible outcome because it solidifies TM/Blake's decision making (lolTynan).

I want to enjoy it but if they shit the bed tomorrow vs. Van it basically runs up tonight as a complete fluke just like the previous Canadian road win streak.

But they really did play a hell of a game and I'm glad they got a much deserved result.

@The Lukeman pointed out earlier in the thread this team hasn't played with a big lead in a while, they've played (and blown) more one-goal games than anyone in the NHL. Not that I want them to let off the gas, but they REALLY have to capitalize more and early, they keep kneecapping themselves by not going for the jugular when they have the chance which seems to be the first period of damn near every game.

The Kings have only given up 38 goals 5v5. That means they're one of the best defensive teams in the league. Really only Calgary is measurably better.

A lot of the Kings losses over the last month have been 50/50 games where they got outplayed on special teams. If they could've just been a little better on the PP and PK many of those games could have fallen in their favor and they wouldn't be in the hole they're in.

If they could cut out even half of the following:

Special teams failures--particularly bad PP giving up SHG
Goals against early
Goals against extremely late
Losing 3rd period leads
Score an empty net goal

They'd be winning the division right now.

The problem is they've had 3 years to work on ANY OF THE ABOVE but they're actively getting worse at all of them.
