GDT: 2021-22 season game 23 LA Kings vs Edmonton Oilers @5:00pm 12/5/21

Hockey is f***ing weird, man.

Honestly unless they go on a serious run this was exactly the worst possible outcome because it solidifies TM/Blake's decision making (lolTynan).

I want to enjoy it but if they shit the bed tomorrow vs. Van it basically runs up tonight as a complete fluke just like the previous Canadian road win streak.

But they really did play a hell of a game and I'm glad they got a much deserved result.

@The Lukeman pointed out earlier in the thread this team hasn't played with a big lead in a while, they've played (and blown) more one-goal games than anyone in the NHL. Not that I want them to let off the gas, but they REALLY have to capitalize more and early, they keep kneecapping themselves by not going for the jugular when they have the chance which seems to be the first period of damn near every game.
I understand your frustration with the Tynan call up and I initially felt the same. However, I’d bet part of him signing in LA was a promise that he’d get a call up and be inserted into the lineup at least once. Without a doubt he’s been invaluable in Ontario and has definitely helped with the development of the wider group. Given the impact he seems to have had if that promise was what it took to sign him I’d be ok with that. It may well be wishful thinking on my part but it makes sense and I highly doubt that, unless he goes on an unforeseen tear, we see him again after this road trip (Covid outbreak apart).

IF he was told he’d get an opportunity then it’s absolutely correct that it was honoured. If he wasn’t given those assurances then I’ve got no explanation at all.

I sure hope so because thus far, he's already been given better opportunity this year than Vilardi, Tkachev, Turcotte, Fagemo, JAD, even Kupari given the PP time...

85.91% offensive zone deployment last night, PLUS 3:20 in power play time, in a game that was tight until the very end....that's actually f***ing insulting because it shows us they KNOW how to play a guy to his strengths and be successful even in an 'important' game, they just won't actually do it for our best prospects.

6:24 of ES ice time, which is a season low for any F on the team.

Angeles Analysis - The Wrong Side of Small Mistakes + Updates on Athanasiou, Byfield, Thomas - LA Kings Insider

“I think we’re playing well, we just need to learn how to score,” Drew Doughty said, after the Anaheim game. “I know we scored four [against Anaheim] but there were times when I was watching where we could’ve put teams away and we let them hang around. All of a sudden, it’s the third period, that’s been the LA Kings story since I got here. We need to bear down and score more goals.”

9:44 of favorable ES and PP time beats 11-12 minutes as 4C with defensive deployment any day.

Why does everyone keep citing TOI in a vacuum, I'll never know. As if Vilardi's usage was similar to Robert Thomas'...

As an example, folks typically view Elias Petterson as an excellent center. That's pretty much the consensus, right? He's absolutely gifted offensively. Now look at his deployment. At even strength his oZS%: 70.%, 61.4%, 75.1% and this season to date 70.6%. He doesn't PK at all. Factoring in all situations and he's 83.1% last season and 79.4% this season. That is obscenely tilted. I ain't saying that our kids should be deployed to that extreme, especially in their 4th NHL season, but wow.

In fairness, I used it when citing Kupari and Kaliyev's lack of usage.

That type of usage for Tynan is laughably low.

If they could cut out even half of the following:

Special teams failures--particularly bad PP giving up SHG
Goals against early
Goals against extremely late
Losing 3rd period leads
Score an empty net goal

They'd be winning the division right now.

The problem is they've had 3 years to work on ANY OF THE ABOVE but they're actively getting worse at all of them.
All of that is irrelevant. The boys are making huge progress where it really counts. In recent memory team's fire their coach AFTER playing the Kings.

Ok? They also won a Cup when Kopitar went goalless for 2 consecutive playoff series. Which was the conference final, and the Cup final. Why do we complain when he doesn't score goals?

DL also brought in a ton of grit before those Cups. Kopitar has never been that guy. Brown hasn't really been that guy. He used to hit people, but he was never a fighter. Doughty thinks he's that guy, but he's not. Quick probably would be that guy, but he plays goal. That 2012 team was as ready to win as you can get. They went up 3-0 in every series. So I guess anything from here on out that is less than 4 consecutive sweeps is a failure, because nothing can live up to the extreme exception to a rule.

I guess we really are having this conversation. Kopitar, at 34, after well over 1100 games, should be a completely different player than he ever has been, outside of about 5 seconds. Yes, that makes sense. We should be pissed that Kopitar is who he is.

Should he be captain? No. Should he have ever been named captain? No. But he is, and he will be for the next couple years. If the Kings want some grit, they have to find it somewhere else. DL knew that. I don't even know if DL would've drafted Kopitar had he been here in 2005. He's not a DL player. Mike Richards. Mike Ricci. Those are the DL types. Not Anze Kopitar. That grit ain't coming from #11. He's not face washing anyone. He's not bear hugging anyone. He did that one time, when the leaders had this franchise amped up to 1000. That we can't think of even a second example of Kopitar being physical in some way, should say everything we need to know.

I saw him hurt someone feeling once.

Yeah, that shorty was the real outlier in last nights game. Not sure why Kopi thought it was a good idea to pass it there with 3 guys below the dot. He had a great view of the goal btw.

Man there are a bunch of whining babies crying full outrage over McJesus getting 5 and a game last night. You nail a guy like than and draw blood, it's gonna be called.

The PP goals post McDavid penalty really helped disguise that that was a 2-1 game where the Kings were sitting back the entire 3rd period waiting for the Oilers to tie the game. For the most part I was really happy with the first two periods, and taking advantage of the 5 minute PP was fun to watch, but the 3rd period before that sucked

I decided to check the main board just to see. I find it hilarious how hated he is by other Canadian fanbases. On the Oilers fan side, it turned into a bunch of whataboutism of McDavid being beaten and tortured on a nightly basis like that gets him a pass on what he did last night. The fact that there wasn't even an ounce of dissension from him on the penalty announcement with the game still in the balance tells you all you need to know.
