GDT: 2021-22 season game 16 LA Kings vs Washington Capitals @7:30pm 11/17/21

Didn't see the game

LA has never had "good" ice conditions, but it sounds like it was extra poor.
Was there improved play by 23?
Quick is having a fantastic season so far. Seems like he's finally healthy.

Brown was the opposite of good.

Feels like the first half of the 2011-12 season all over with Quick standing on his head and getting very little offensive support. Last night felt like a Terry Murray classic.

I've typically been a Kopitar Defender, but he has been a shell of what he displayed the first week of the season. Night and day. I actually get concerned now when his line is on the ice...at least Arvidsson is back. Brown is by far the biggest anchor on that line and has to be moved off of it or out of the lineup completely. Again, at least REST him. He's the oldest guy on the team and there's no reason to keep doing this crazy shit where we keep hoping a 37 year old is going to magically stop playing like shit after a 4 game in 6 days road trip. Instead they bench Grundstrom, who is playing the best hockey of his life.

Matt Roy hasn't been the same since his concussion last year, which is sad to say because otherwise he had been awesome. With all the RD in the pipeline behind him, his days might be numbered in LA. He's not mean enough to be a nasty defender and provides really no offensive upside. Truthfully he's a good 3rd pairing guy, but the Kings need more.

But the Kopitar line has been broken for at least since Arvidsson got Covid.
yeah i feel really bad for roy too. not sure if i'm comfortable with the concussion excuse but it's very possible. he just makes mistakes like it's his job, and i genuinely had him pegged as a long term 2nd pairing guy when he broke out, he played really great hockey in 19-20. i guess maybe my expectations were high for a 7th round guy, but i really wished he was a diamond

To be fair that's the first outright BAD game Roy has had in a while. He looked like the guy that was about to bust out of the league in...2019?

But since his injury he's been inconsistent. He's only a couple of games removed from a stellar performance.

I'm sure it's the bigger minutes catching up to some of these guys, have to expect mistakes when they aren't all Drew Doughty.

So wait, does that mean we are winning the cup this year?

Dustin Brown is basically Trent Hunter at this stage so I don't see why not, especially since they're having Kaliyev audition as Dwight King.

Only thing left is to swap Turcotte and Thomas for Larkin!

Fire TM and hire TM.
I mean... I felt like the Kings improved as much under Terry Murray as in any other era in Kings history. He was teaching them a hard nosed, defensive, albeit frustrating to watch at times, style of play which worked really well in the playoffs.

I don't hate McClellan as much as some folks around here but I'd be amazed if he's the guy at the helm when and if this project ever gets off the ground.

Outside of not launching the young kids and putting them in the best position to utilize their scoring abilities, the playing time for Kopitar has to be the most frustrating part of having TM behind the bench. He's literally doing the opposite of what he said he was going to in the off/preseason, not really sure how even the biggest TM defenders can be happy about that.

A very repetitive, chicken-and-egg "well someone has to earn it" where Kopitar eats all the minutes so no one can play (and Danault eats 18 more leaving ~18 minutes for the bottom 2 C), so no one can prove themselves or develop themselves to eat more minutes.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

I dont think Id care as much if kopitar was playing amazing. But he doesnt look sharp and isnt eating the minutes that well. They have enough centers in the organization to roll lines. The young players need to take over and show they dont need kopitar doughty and brown to win games. They did go on a streak without doughty and the young dmen stepped up well. Could they do it without kopitar playing the heavy minutes is yet to be seen.

I just feel like it's one thing to say you're going to work the kids into the lineup and a completely other thing to say that the acquisition of Danault will allow him to decrease Kopitars regular season icetime and make him more effective in shelf life and potential playoffs. Maybe it was prior to Byfields injury but at that stage those guys were still fighting for those spots so that strategy shouldn't waiver too much.

Same, same. I just didn't point that out in my post, thank you.

i'd greatly enjoy a game of just rolling 4 outside of special teams

f*** all the matchup bullshit that never matters anyway

The capitals are a really good team, and we hung right with them all the way. Big picture, not too bothered by losing this one, just sucks we did with 5 minutes to go. Same idea with Carolina tomorrow- that’s probably a game we are supposed to lose, just play well and see how it goes.

I’m not ready to hit the panic button about the offense until we see how they fare against Arizona and the canadian teams next week. But it sure seems to be getting scarce.

Yeah if I saw this game completely context-less, I wouldn't be mad about it. It was a very evenly played game with a 'first goal wins' feel the whole way anyway. I'm just reserving the right to be a pissy little bitch because of ongoing context :P

At some point this team needs to learn how to clutch down and not give up so many games tied or winning going into the 3rd, or how to score an extra man goal. Part of the growing process I guess but that's also what the vets are for--but they can't be there if a visibly-gassed Kopitar is playing 25 minutes.

If we lock down the Jets game, I feel less grumpy about this one. Now it's most likely gonna be 3 in a row (no expectations for Carolina) plus a usually-unreadable-circus game vs. AZ.

Can't be mad, way past that. Effort was there but can't win many games without scoring. Recurring theme I know...
