It's not that I want DL back. At the time I thought he should be given the opportunity to shift focus from selling picks/prospects to keep going for it, to re-tolling or re-building. At the time I thought his past track record with the Kings should have allowed him that. It is interesting he has not reserviced as a GM or president of hockey ops elsewhere.
He has been gone too long and do not want him back.

One thing I think DL did a great job of was surround himself with other great executives. Losing Futa, Soloman, and Struthers from the organization is a loss IMO. Not saying their replacements will not or cannot succeed, but those guys were great from an outsider POV.

I really dont think you can make a case for that though. He bled the organization dry. Lost a ton of picks for over the hill players. He lost himself with Richards, he was trending downwards pretty rapidly and it was very evident. I don't think you could have logically sat around and prayed that he found his groove when there was no sign that that was the case.

He made it evident that the New NHL wasn't a thing and he became pretty archaic pretty quickly.

Sol - we can all lament that loss, but in all honesty Turcotte had a killer season that year and that elevated his value. Zegras is definitely going to be the top dog from the 2019 draft. Sometimes we miss. But we also have to feel fortunate to see guys like Clarke, Kaliyev and Pinelli fall to us. I still think Byfield can go down as the best player in the 2020 draft - only time will tell. Raymond will be a stud as well.

Dont know man. I think Zegras has definitely shown consistent flashes of elite talent. So has Byfield. After being a Kings fan for so long, I am not sold on any prospect until they show they can hang in the NHL.

Look fellas, lets not be crazy.

Lombardi had definitely lost his touch, Sutter lost his touch, Blake was a bad hire. And Luc is ass. So is Todd.

All of this can be true all at once. I dont know why any of you would want DL back. He lost the team, its only logical to say that promoting Blake was idiotic.

I'd argue that Sutter didn't lose his touch: his touch just has a shelf life. He's out here in this soft-ass 2021-22 NHL killing it with Calgary.

What about Flames fans, do you think they were happy to see Sutter re-hired last season? How do you think they feel now? I'm only asking this anecdotally

I think DL could still re-build a team and turn them into Champions again today, sure why not? When he was first hired by the Kings he always talked about how much he learned from his mistakes and spent a lot time reflecting on what he did wrong during his first timeout in Philly.

I hope he gets a chance again anywhere, if not with the Kings. It would be really interesting to see. Of course, IF I were him and AEG approached me to return and fix it... I'd tell them to get lost.

Thinking it would be fun to come up with some panic trades Blake may be looking at. Like Cal 4 Price @50%. They'll probably just wait to see if Byfield can come in next week & save the season or at least their jobs.

Play Byfield on the 1st line!
Kempe/ Byfield/Brown!!!

It can be argued that the Kings talent pool is definitely close if not the top in the NHL. I only wish we found a way to get Wallstedt as our goaltending prospects are a bit weak. It seems like the Kings goaltending coaches can really maximize the talent we do have.

He traded picks going for it, the team had won 2 cups in 3 years. I was ok with it. Once the team was eliminated from playoff contention in 16-17 even he said it was time to re-look at things. So that is sign for it. The thing about this though is I remember reading somewhere him saying something along those lines, but at the time of the firing I could not find the quote anywhere. So I guess take that for what it is, either people will believe he saw the current state of the team or not. Not buying out Richards when he had the chance is the big indefinable thing from DL's tenure. Well that and signing Cloutier.

That I can agree with. The Kings goalie situation is pretty bad. I don't think it's debatable that Petersen isn't it. He's not good. He can't take the reigns from an old Quick. That says enough. Quick at his age and in his shell, is still a better goalie.

I still think the Kovalchuk "flop" was greatly exaggerated. It was pretty logical after the Kings got absolutely curbstomped by the Knights in the playoffs due to their lack of offense. I dont think a three year contract was a big commitment really.

I did not like the signing bit I agree it made sense at the time. Given how well defensively the Kings looks the year before, and the fact Carter was due back. There was a fair reason to be optimistic. Even though did not like it I really wish it had worked out.

Peterson taking a step back this year maybe the worst thing going on with the kings. Quick has looked good is the flip side, but Petersen needs to be better, especially given his contract (that I was a fan of ).

For how long?

He usually has like a five year deal and then the wheels fall off. He left Chicago because of Chris's needs when he was born so he left on a high note there. Jumped up to the GM role in his first Calgary stint before the wheels came off. He's pretty much a five season guy in SJ and LA.

With players being softer these days, this Calgary thing will probably be shorter than usual as they will tire of him faster. Dude can coach though. The game may have changed but there are certain things that will always matter and Sutter brings those elements to the table.

Quick looks great this year - wasn't sure we were ever going to see him back in rare form again. Blake has whiffed on a couple of his decisions but at least he keeps the contracts short. Hopefully Petersen pans out, but seems to me that he doesn't have that ability to make a big save when we need it most. You think we can pluck Martin Jones back from the Flyers? Losing Campbell *REALLY* hurt us. He's been one of the best goalies in the league the past few years.

The Jack Campbell trade worked out like this:

Clifford and Campbell to the Maple Leafs in exchange for:

Trevor Moore
3rd Round Pick in 2020 NHL Draft (Laferriere?)
3rd Round Pick in 2021 NHL Draft (Kirsanov?) - we traded up so it's confusing

Would you do it again?

Im personally not of the mind of second chances. I think the idea of over correcting is very dangerous. Dean managed the team poorly near the end. I think he's good at rebuilding, but he's been too far out of the picture for too long to get back in. Nevertheless, I'd be willing to bet he doesn't want that role again. If he did, he probably would be a GM. He looked old as f*** near the end and I know thats normal. But he looked restless, and I think thats why he kind of bowed out of the picture. (just speculation)

Im fine with "going" for it. But definitely not for Lucic for example. That was a big price to pay for someone who was over the hill. And the Kings paid for it . I am cool with taking chances, but Dean completely stripped the cupboard. COMPLETELY. and that I had a problem with. If the team is dying, and it was was, dont strip the new ship to replace the parts of a ship thats already taking water.

I was never a fan of the signing for Petersen because I thought he didn't deserve that deal (I was criticized for that stance :/) But yeah, Petersen is definitely not the man. If he cant take the reigns now then he wont later.

I doubt he lasts more than 3 years tops. Either the Kings locker room was extremely entitled and whiny, or Sutter's schtick wore out it's welcome quick. I think there was entitlement, but Sutter seemed like the best part of his coaching was just his ability to make players perform (but not for long)

I think the Kings need to look from within or make a trade for a good goalie prospect. Kings need some youth. Petersen is nearly 29 I think and hasn't put it together yet. Dont expect him to.

Fun talking to all you guys. If only the management was this open and honest with us and stopped f***ing around.

Blob McKenzie. Best.burner.Twitter.account.ever.

Made crazy trade announcements and other stuff...caught several off guard.

I like Petersen but hes having a shaky season. Even though I like him I never thought of him as the guy that will be the starter for the next contender they put together. More of a bridge between Quick and the next guy they develop. Finding a high end goalie prospect should be a top priority.

Using Kovalchuk as an indictment of this group like so many do is ridiculous. I liked the Kovalchuk move and it cost the Kings nothing of value. In retrospect it's such a nothing move. To the funny man on Twitter I'd respond how'd that Lucic deal work out?!? Same logic - add a piece for a playoff push, except the Kings got bent over!

I don't understand how people still act like that move was bad. It was just a signing for three years after the Kings got smoked by the Knights because of our lack of offense. I don't get why people still talk about it like it set the team back or something.

I actually liked the Lucic trade immediately but obviously in retrospect it was a disaster. I'd take Lucic back on this team without hesitation. He took dump penalties, but at least he defended his teammates. He would have jumped McDavid the other night. I remember a game in Arizona where some clown totally chopped his wrist and he went ballistic, no holds barred!

Lucic deal too I understood. Top 6 LW at the ap hit he came with (50% retained) for a first and a backup.
