DL sabotaged the things that people above him wanted? Is that how an army works? No wonder the culture DL was trying to build lasted such a short while. Stretched to its limits by 2014, but paper thin. Once it went, it was gone and gone quickly.

See The Imitation Game and MI-6.

See also WII, General Patton, the taking of Palermo and Messina.

Now that Dean has captured three straight WCF appearances, along with winning two Stanley Cups, ask Tim Leiweke if he wants Dean to give them back.

That 27th is a product of the beginning of the season. They gave up I think 9 on that 1st roadtrip, 4 against the Blues alone. It had skewed the entire pct . They gave up 2 the other night [ Petersen of course in net] and 5 total in the last 5 games. They were good last night though.

Not if you consider where a majority of the shots are coming from on the PK. They're giving up a lot of good looks and the data backs it up. Last night their xGA on just three PKs was nearly a goal and a half with 3 high danger chances against. Quick stood on his head. They're not pressuring the puck in order to work on forcing the puck out of the zone - Dallas was able to spend way too much time in the Kings' zone on the powerplay. They do not contest zone entries either, they let them skate in easily and set up. Whereas if you look at the Kings on the PP, teams challenge them at the blueline and zone entries are not nearly successful enough.

Not a criticism of Kovalchuk, but he wasn't a "DL type of guy" and he was a winger. It is pretty easy to imagine that DL didn't want to tie up so much money in a winger. When he finally got the chance, he moved significant assets to acquire a center with a big money contract and then took a big run at signing another big money center that same off-season, eventually trading good assets again for another big money center that could also play wing.

With the age of the team's core in the summer of Kovalchuk and the assets that had been compiled (picks/prospects/cap space) he could afford to "miss out" and keep his powder dry. Went out and got Mitchell later that summer which turned out to be pretty damn important.

So inside info or not, it isn't going out on a limb to believe that DL wasn't in love with the idea of Kovalchuk.

Or, you could decide to view it as Lombardi knowing that his boss was making a massive mistake and used what was at his disposal to do the right thing for the organization.

I'll keep believing that the guy who brought two Cups was smarter than the guy who wanted a big name to sell tickets.

And DL's culture collapsed in a minute.

The "Waiting for Kovalchuk" Summer was one of the longest. What year was that? 2010?

I was so excited..

Our PK this year:

L.A

By comparison, here's what the shot chart looked like when they were good at the PK:
L.A

Adds up with what we've been seeing...they are so hyper focused on defending the high slot (and SO passive at pressuring the puck) that they're completely abandoning every other high danger area. I really don't get it.
I think the current penalty kill is indicative of their new style of play. LA has really turned their offensive game around and in the process, their defensive game suffers some. It'll only be a matter of time before they're able to kill off penalties like they used to. That's just how they practice. They practice against each other and learn how to play from each other. This PK product was bound to happen. I expect their PP to really pick up this season, especially when you add Byfield and Vilardi, although their PP isn't horrible. They're right where I thought they would be in their development and progress at this time of season.

Are you kidding me with this.

There is no question that Lie-weekly was pushing DL to sign big name UFAs. Remember timing this was shortly after the Galaxy signed Beckham and threw all kinds of side AEG money at him and his spice girl wife

Do you not remember Lie-weekly flying to Toronto to court Brad Richards?
Kings optimistic after 'all-in' presentation to Brad Richards
There was also plenty in the press about AEG helping IK's wife's music career

It's bad business to publicly slam your employee but the writing is all over the wall that DL didn't have the same hard on for IK that Lie-weekly did .
Look up old articles from that IK complained that DL made him feel like a rookie again with question he asked about off-season workouts, dedication, etc

Lol I found something. I forgot about this article

Kings gamble big and lose big on Ilya Kovalchuk
Thanks for indulging me with this. Helene Elliott is as credible a Kings source as your gonna get, I suppose. I was honestly just curious. Still speculative but a little more than just HF musings. Lieweke was a suit in every sense of the word but very successful in his time with the Kings.

Don't forget Lieweke was a meddler with TO, as well, except there they wouldn't stand for it and even the media was like f*** off with that. It makes it easy to understand.

Tim Leiweke: The travelling salesman who left his mark on Toronto

In a lot of ways I really like and admire him. I think he comes off as an ego-driven chud but I believe he's actually a really good visionary who is better at leaving the details to others but rubs those others the wrong way when he has his mind set on something. He's a high functioning but surprisingly friendly/approachable Type A. It's no wonder he's been so successful in general. But it's also no surprise that being a carnival barker creating the vision for those with more experience in certain fields (hockey) doesn't go well (with the old boys club).

If he was as successful as you think, AEG wouldn't have fired him
He was full of shit

They fired Deano also... not sure I totally trust AEGs character assessment so unsure of your point here.

I'm not a lieweke fan but I'm also becoming less of a Luc Robitaille fan by the day.

He's successful. AEG fired him over a different/competing vision on football coming back to LA.

Now full of shit...I wouldn't necessarily argue.

It always cracks me up when people go, "well, if you just take away these particularly bad performances, the Kings would be awesome!" It's like, "well, if you just take away that stretch when they lost six games in a row, their record would look a lot better!" Yep. Absolutely right. Can't argue with that.

I blame Luc for the sad state of the franchise currently, he is the one who pulled the powerplay to take full control of the franchise. Now you can see his fingerprints all over some of the confusing at best decisions. I can't remember the opponent, but their broadcast crew told a story about how Luc came up with the chrome helmets because he thought they resembled the nose of a fighter jet. They then proceeded to mock the buckets relentlessly for the rest of the game. Honestly, once I heard about him turning down Nickson to bring in Faust my opinion of him in his current role hit rock bottom.

In a minute? It was building from the day he acquired Justin Williams, and provided three seasons of championship hockey. In a minute my ass.

Dr.: You know, it's a shame about Ed
Fletch: Oh, it was. Yeah, it was really a shame. To go suddenly like that.
Dr: He was dying for years
Fletch: Sure, but...the end was very...very sudden.
Dr: He was in intensive care for eight weeks.
Fletch: Yeah, but I mean the very end: when he died. That was extremely sudden.

When were linesman given the rights to be so f-ing picky in the faceoff circle.. when did that creep into the game? Its gotten so bad it gives me anxiety watching these clowns mess with the players on a regular basis - with all the false drops and kicking guys i out. I hate it... I dont see it in Junior or international like WJC.. its just in NHL and AHL theyve turned into little librarians out there

This happened? What the f***?
