What's really interesting about Wheeler's rankings is that Clarke, at 7, is the second-highest defenseman behind Power... and above guys like Moritz Seider (11), Bowen Byram (15), Jamie Drysdale (17), Luke Hughes (19), and Jake Sanderson (27). There are more defensemen in the 30-50 range too, but I don't need to list them all. Suffice it to say I think we have a bright future.

I'd love to see a line of Turcotte - Danault - Kaliyev by the way.

Byfield - Kopitar - Vilardi
Turcotte - Danault - Kaliyev

Let's goooo.

I still wonder if Clarke is going to pull a Doughty this year... something special about this kid.

I feel he is just a bit rawer than Doughty was at that age. I really wish he could play in the AHL instead of the CHL, but that can't happen. Think we'll see him the following year.

I think Clarke is at least a year away. Will be exciting to watch him in juniors this year though

Wheeler has always been low on Seider. If we were Wings fans, we would be crapping on that ranking as well. I'm a Kings fan and don't think you can rank Clarke ahead of him.

Wheeler loves offensive potential and will chase that ceiling when it comes to his prospect rankings. I also think this is why he generally favors recent draftees over guys from two years ago: the recent draftees haven't had a chance to be Turcotte yet. Looks like there is a lot more 18 and 19 year olds at the top of his list than at the bottom. Hell, he leans in on the age thing pretty hard when justifying Byfield at #1.

Not criticizing because I wouldn't even try to put a list together. You just have to know what the author likes before freaking out over his list. Wheeler chases the ceiling v. the floor and he is going to shuffle you down the list--in favor of guys that haven't proven anything against men--if it looks like you aren't going to hit the ceiling he expected after two years.

I have to imagine that the Kings could have traded Turcotte for the 11th or 12th pick in this past draft yet he's ranked 7 and 8 spots below the players taken with those picks.

Wheeler's rankings has me all giddy on this Monday morning. 4 in the top 50, including #1 and #7.

Yep, Wheeler:Wings fans::Button:Kings fans, heh

BUT--Wheeler backs up his thoughts immensely AND it's a good illustration of differing draft philosophies. He even sticks around in the comments to discuss when people are reasonable rather than ridiculous. He's at least consistent and doesn't have hot takes to the degree than anything is indefensible.

his responses in the comments has provided a fair bit of value too

Bold prediction. We've only had one 35 goal scorer since 2007. Last 40 goal scorer was Robitaille in 1994! Woof.

Edit: and LMAO, Gretzky had 130 points that year and was still -25.

Extrapolated out Carter was at 45 during the shortened season. He was a machine!

I stand by it, Kaliyev is going to be a beast.

Wow Yanetti is running the show. Guess you don't need an AGM.

I mean he is the director of amateur scouting so I would hope so :P Gotta trust the guy you put on the job. As for the AGM, who knows, but we definitely have a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to the executive side of things.

In the end, awesome video! Hard not to get excited seeing them all so excited about getting every single player they targeted. Hopefully they develop into some nice players for us.

I know everyone likes to shit on Blake... but I like the Denault signing (except for that last year of the contract) just for the bold leadership he'll provide this team.

But also something has to be said of Blake's willingness to take the reins off Yannetti to be bold and get their guys in this draft (having the extra picks certainly helped). Hell, they traded up THREE TIMES and were doneso on day 2 before mid day. That's cra-cra!

Pinelli has the chance to be the steal of the draft on Day 2 like Kaliyev was in my book. I love this quality or quantity approach.

Awesome video for the sure. Love seeing the behind the scenes process. The Kings had the luxury of trading up so many times because they seemingly nailed so many of their draft choices over the last three drafts. That's not to say that they are all going to hit, but they certainly haven't shown to be duds yet. So it's about quality over quantity for this particular draft. Now they have both quantity and quality in the pipeline.

Excellent strategy when you already have tremendous depth in your prospect pool. Very smart. You can tell Yanetti knows what he is doing and did it aggressively. Also clearly they don’t just sit with some published list and pick the top player, but they do their homework.
