Zerter-Gossage Shows Potential In Five-Goal Masterpiece

The 26-year-old Maine Mariners forward scored five goals and added one assist in a wild, 8-7 overtime loss to Trois-Rivieres.

Nov 16, 2021 by Mike Ashmore

Originally, Lewis Zerter-Gossage’s “Ogretzkin” Twitter handle was a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference to a little self-deprecating humor he came up with when he was in and out of the lineup during his freshman year at Harvard.

“I made a joke about how my player comparison was ‘Ogretzkin,’ a mix between Gretzky and Ovechkin,” Zerter-Gossage told FloHockey via cell phone. “At the time, as a freshman kid who wasn’t playing a ton, it was just a little bit of a sarcastic joke.”

On Friday night, it sure looked pretty accurate. ...

2021-22 ECHL Power Rankings (Nov 17)

Growlers Continue Dominance; Komets, Royals On Hot Streaks

With some teams having already reached double digits for games played during the 2021-22 season, it’s becoming more and more clear who the haves and the have nots are in the race for the Kelly Cup.

The FloHockey ECHL power rankings have therefore stabilized a bit, and the gains and falls of individual teams are a little less extreme as the sample size continues to grow. Only one team, the Kalamazoo Wings, moved up or down more than ten spots, and the Newfoundland Growlers remain in the top spot for the fourth consecutive week. ...

Are any Atlanta Gladiators fans able to tell me what number Kevin Mandolese will wear and if the team wears those powder blue Thrashers jerseys regularly?

I have a Sens jersey collection, which includes jerseys worn by prospects or players internationally. I don't have an ECHL prospect jersey yet, and love those powder blue jerseys as they are so unique. But I want to make sure that each jersey in my collection was a style the player actually wore.

As @JMCx4 said, he is on the roster as number 75. You are unlikely to see him in one of the powder blue jerseys as the head coach absolutely hates those jerseys and is refusing to wear them. They are based off the Thrashers jersey and he refused to even wear them for Atlanta Hockey Heritage night last Saturday. Will let you know if something changes and they make their debut this season.

Ha. I guess that makes it even funnier that the team's "Maximus the Lion" mascot wears the powder blue jersey at every game!

2021-22 ECHL Power Rankings

Dec. 1, 2021

Wichita Surges, Everblades Steady

The Newfoundland Growlers continue their stronghold on the number one spot for a sixth consecutive week, but there’s plenty of shuffling below them in this week’s installment of FloHockey’s ECHL power rankings.

1. Newfoundland Growlers (Last Week: 1)

(13-2-0-0)

The purpose of power rankings, largely, is to create debate. There is no debate when it comes to this spot. Newfoundland has won six straight, has the league’s best goal differential at a plus-28 and is the only team with a points percentage higher than .656, with a whopping .867 mark easily leading the way.

2. Wichita Thunder (Last Week: 8)

(9-5-1-0)

Wichita has remained hot this past week, and have strung together eight straight games without a regulation loss, tied for the longest active streak in the ECHL. The Thunder swept the weekend, posting 12 goals over three games in home wins over Tulsa and Rapid City (twice).

3. Florida Everblades (Last Week: 3)

(8-3-2-3)

The Everblades are the other team in the league with a current eight-game streak without a regulation loss, and are showing signs that they’ve returned to their perennial powerhouse ways. Florida captured points in each of their three games against the Jacksonville Icemen this past weekend, including losses in the shootout, overtime and a regulation win. ...

Indy Fuel's Cale Morris Records First Shutout As Pro

Morris was the 2018 winner of the Mike Richter Award as the best goaltender in the country, and a two-time Big Ten Tournament MVP as a member of Notre Dame.

Nov 29, 2021
by Mike Ashmore

One of college hockey’s most decorated netminders in recent memory is slowly starting to rack up the accolades on the pro side as well.

Cale Morris, the 2018 winner of the Mike Richter Award as the best goaltender in the country, and a two-time Big Ten Tournament MVP as a member of Notre Dame, has been finding his stride with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel in his second professional season.

His first pro shutout, a 1-0 blanking of the defending league champion Fort Wayne Komets on November 17 ... served as an excellent display of the athleticism that’s gotten him to this point. ...

Where Have the Mavericks Gone?

by Dan Stilley
December 7, 2021

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The 2021-22 season started with a bang for the Mavericks. After opening weekend, the Mavericks had a 1-1 record and led the league in penalty minutes. They played with gusto, finished checks, played as a team, and despite losing opening night, they got the job done. They continued at a .500 clip for the rest of October and part of November.

But things seemed to take a turn for the worse after a 3-1 loss in Tulsa on November 12 in a terrible performance for the Mavericks. Since then, they have been 3-6-1-1.

The team seemed so exciting to start the season. A new coaching staff, an expanded role for Tad O’Had, and a few exciting new additions to an already talented team made expectations high for this team. But now, the Mavericks are contending for last in the Mountain Division against a struggling, but improving, Allen Americans team.

What has happened to this team, a squad that some had pegged to finish first in the Mountain Division? Let’s examine what has been going wrong for Kansas City. ...

Interesting that T-R has been signing guys from local senior leagues and LNAH, including their EBuG who has had two stints with the team so far.
That's called: "Promoting from within (the province)." It's a Québecois tradition, isn't it?

Interesting that T-R has been signing guys from local senior leagues and LNAH, including their EBuG who has had two stints with the team so far.
Roster management is probably the most important attribute for a head coach in the ECHL. Teams typically use 40-50 players over the course of a year. A lot of teams sign local players to fill in as needed. A coach with more relationships around the league and in other leagues has more options, and having more experience in the league will allow them to anticipate and sign better players who are active pros. Of course T-R has the added challenge of the border issue and covid, so they may not be able to get a player they trade for, or sign out of the SPHL, into Canada and signed to a contract quickly enough. They also have the advantage of having the LNAH and competitive house leagues with relatively high quality players available locally that a lot of American cities might not have.

In the past the Royals would often sign local house league players or retired ECHL and AHL players who lived locally to fill in. Their recent coaches have been better able to manage the roster and replace players with trades for future considerations or waiver signings, and they don't do it as often any more.
