It’s a gamble and it does remind me a little of when Peyton Manning (granted he was vastly more established) was released by the Colts due to injury concerns and the fact they were going to draft Luck.
Manning couldn’t throw the ball further than 10 yards and it was bad. Broncos took a gamble coming off a playoff appearance and signed Manning despite the concerns that Manning was toast. It paid off obviously but the point is you rarely get a chance at these type of players. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice.
The difference being that in football taking a gamble on an all-star quarterback can instantly vault a team into contention if it pays off. You really need a supporting cast around a player like Eichel otherwise, hey, you're the Buffalo Sabres.
I just don't think the Kings are at that point. Eichel is a better player than Richards, but it reminds me of the Richards trade. We'd already made the playoffs two years in a row with a very young team. They were ready to bring in a player like Richards. The current Kings aren't ready to bring in anyone, in my opinion.
