I miss Lombardi's 3-minute answers to a 10-second question.

I miss his explanation of coulombs...

"Those clocks are sophisticated instruments that calculate time by measuring electrical charges called coulombs — given the rapidity and volume of electrons that move through the measuring device the calibrator must adjust at certain points which was the delay you see.

The delay is just recalibrating for the clock moving too quickly during the 10—10ths of a second before the delay. This insures that the actual playing time during a period is exactly 20 minutes.

"That is not an opinion -— that is science -— amazing device quite frankly."

This is such a goat reply if you ask me.

I am not expecting anyone to be given a grilling or the third degree, but there is a difference between asking a question for an answer versus framing a question so the response is a given - and that response when asked by Carrlyn is strictly about making the fans feel better, not learning anything.

Reporting should be about informing the reader/viewer/listener, not coddling them by reinforcing what they already want to think or feel (ahem, Fox News, etc).

I desperately want to hear MacLellan's opinion about things like their difficulties along the wall and how that impacts their ability to sustain forechecks and create offense off the cycle.

Fans get impatient with talk about firings, extreme things like that, but maybe I am not in the majority here, but I can't remember a time where Kings management and coaching have had less communication with the fans. Lombardi spoiled us, but gee whiz, how do we hold them accountable if we don't ever really get a good grasp on what they are thinking about the things that matter? Even the tv broadcasts are increasingly aimed at people who know next to nothing about the game and don't want their "heroes" even mildly criticized?

We get to say whatever the hell we want here, not expecting or even wanting that kind of discourse, just something more objective.

I'm 100% with you but there's a huge difference between an LA Times employee paid by the newspaper to report on the Kings and guaranteed access by the league basically no matter what they say (see Dater's screwloose sideshow tonight) and an unpaid volunteer writing about the team.

While I'm sure the media rules have been updated over time and I'm not up to date with them, someone like Helene Elliott could basically do everything short of accusing Dean Lombardi of running a gambling ring behind the scenes and retain her access AND employment, where someone like Hoven could get his credentials pulled for basically nothing and be left with empty hands.

I'm not trying to say it's a great scenario I just wish people here would exercise a little more understanding for the folks that are doing this on a basically volunteer basis with little/no guarantee vs. those doing it for a living with job and access security.

One guy I hope we stay away from this offseason is Marcus Pettersson. He’s a 25 yo LHD, so he is in the category the Kings are rumored to want. But he stinks IMO and is overpaid by $3M a season.

His deal is awful and at best he’s a marginal upgrade over Maata while bringing a PPG average probably worse than MacDermid.

I don’t know, Hoven throws stuff out there with the expectation it’s reality, not his opinion, and then gets pissed when people call him on it. He should just say wow sources got that one wrong or whatever and go with the flow. Instead he blocks people on Twitter and whatnot. It’s childish.
I avoid Twitter as it just irritates me in general although it is helpful for the odd DM.

To be fair, you have to work with the people on a regular basis. If you're going to be more "in your face accountability" - you're going to get less content and accessibility.

With Carrlyn, I don't remember who she spoke to, but she said to the extent you have to frame your questions differently, depending on the person. Like, Quick won't throw his teammates under the bus, and he'll answer very shortly. If you prod him to try to get more content, you're less likely to get cooperation.

There's also a reason why I write in a particular tone with Mayor's Manor. I would never look at a player and write "I hope the Kings avoid this guy." Because if the Kings take him, we're already starting off on the wrong foot by having a piece ****ting on a kid, plus with me not being a scout, I'm coming across as adversarial with the scouting staff and they may want to be less communicative in helping Hoven provide content in the future.

Plus, I may not be high on some prospects for various reasons, but I'm 99% against ****ting on a prospect in general, unless it's someone like the Seattle Thunderbirds' players who called their own teammate a racial slur and waved a banana at him, or Mitchell Miller who bullied a disabled kid.

Long and short of it - I have a better understanding and appreciation for the effort done by the likes of Hoven, Carrlyn, DB, Jesse Cohen, Gann Matsuda, and anyone else I'm forgetting. I still vehemently disagree with them at times and get annoyed with stuff they've written/said (and I disagree at times with Hoven, despite enjoying writing for him). But there's a reason why these people continue to have (and build) connections - and yes, they have legit connections: they treat them like people instead of shooting for a sound byte.
I’ve done team reporting, local newspaper and local tv reporting (at a much lower level) and completely get where you are coming from. I once called a 2-0 shutout a bad game (which it was as the opposition was embarrassingly bad) and subsequently ended up in a big (very public) argument with one of the top imports we had, basically trying to forbid me from being critical. As, I also did the team stats and it quickly became very obvious that I couldn’t work both sides of it. Keeping people onside to get access, but also doing a good job is very hard indeed. Working for the team also was impossible so I dropped my media involvement and focussed on stats (and started doing what is now expected goals, which was slightly controversial at the time).

I’m going off on a tangent now, but I later up in a row with the same player with his plus/minus…. He really lost his temper when I used video to prove I was right!! It was a right pain using VHS to do that

I still remember holding it all in until the clock struck zero. Even with 10 seconds left, I had this irrational thought of "what if the most absurd thing happened?"

When it hit zero, I admit, I cried.

And every time I see it, tears well up.

When Emerick started talking about Bob and how long he had waited for a championship, that's when I got emotional. Think it happened around 3 minutes or so of the original national broadcast.

Trade proposal:

To Kings:
JT Miller $5.25M till 2023
Loui Eriksson $6M till 2022 ($3M buyout)
9th overall pick 2021 (VAN)
2023 1st round pick (VAN -lottery protected)

To Canucks:
Sean Walker $2.65M till 2024
8th overall pick 2021 (LAK)

Kings buyout Eriksson.

Despite $6M cap hit, Loui Eriksson’s actual salary is $4M ($1M signing bonus) in 2021-22. Vancouver gets hit for $2M recapture on buyout. Kings get cap hit for $2M in 2021-22 and $1M in 2022-23 with buyout.

Canucks get $6.35M immediate cap relief.

Vancouver needs cap space to sign UFAs (Quinn Hughes & Elias Pettersson) this year.

Kings get top 6 200-foot forward in JT Miller to play alongside Kopitar. Kings get 2023 1st round draft pick (lottery protected) for buying out Eriksson.

Kings swap spots in the 2021 draft and pick #9 instead of #8.
Steve - I’ll forward this to Blake and give you credit. Dave O

I miss DL, period.

20-30 years ago, if you said the Kings would have 3 WCF appearances, 2 cups in a span of 3 years. You’d give that GM a lifetime contract.

Don’t idolize him. He made enough mistakes.

Lucic, Sekera, Gaborik contract, Teubert, calling how Pittsburgh winning a ‘flash in the pan’, not buying out Richards, not trading Stoll/Williams when they were UFA, Cloutier, holding onto Sutter, Smyth, Bishop (bye bye Czernak). Many more.

It’s easy to look at the past with rose coloured glasses. This GM had a focus that was outdated in the modern NHL and married his players/Sutter.

Let it go.

Don't care. Collateral damage and more than worth it.
