Speculation: 2021-21 LA Kings News/Rumors/Roster discussion

Is Friedman referring to Hoven's comments from a couple weeks ago? That was pure speculation on Hoven's part.

I made list of UFA that have won at least 1 cup and may show some interest in signing in LA. I left off some of the guys I don't think have much left to give and/or are longshots like Ovechkin, Getzlaf, Staal, Krejci, Perry, etc.

Coleman
Goodrow
Schwartz
Saad (he will have a bunch of offers based on his post season)

Trade proposal:

To Kings:
JT Miller $5.25M till 2023
Loui Eriksson $6M till 2022 ($3M buyout)
9th overall pick 2021 (VAN)
2023 1st round pick (VAN -lottery protected)

To Canucks:
Sean Walker $2.65M till 2024
8th overall pick 2021 (LAK)

Kings buyout Eriksson.

Despite $6M cap hit, Loui Eriksson’s actual salary is $4M ($1M signing bonus) in 2021-22. Vancouver gets hit for $2M recapture on buyout. Kings get cap hit for $2M in 2021-22 and $1M in 2022-23 with buyout.

Canucks get $6.35M immediate cap relief.

Vancouver needs cap space to sign UFAs (Quinn Hughes & Elias Pettersson) this year.

Kings get top 6 200-foot forward in JT Miller to play alongside Kopitar. Kings get 2023 1st round draft pick (lottery protected) for buying out Eriksson.

Kings swap spots in the 2021 draft and pick #9 instead of #8.

This is a no brainer for LA if Walker isn't picked by Seattle. They get a good player, extra 1st, and only move down 1 spot for taking on a dead salary. Walker can be replaced by Strand.

When did Hoven become Bobby Mac? Pretty sure we were supposed to be waving goodbye to Iafallo at the TDL just a couple of months ago.

I'm not saying that Blake is in on Eichel, it's just amusing to read these tweets.

Teams/agents using members of the media to "leak" information to get the ball rolling isn't uncommon. TSN had Iafallo on their trade board as well, perhaps seeing his name out there in trade rumors got Iafallo's side to budge, as most of us assumed he wouldn't want to leave LA.

Plus, this bit of information about the Kings not having interest in Eichel isn't something that should alarm us. The guy has a serious injury, making lots of money, and it would cost the team more than they're willing to give up to get him. For those reasons, it doesn't make sense to pursue him. Now Reinhart makes a lot more sense as a fit on this team, so long as they can get him signed to a long-term deal.

I like the idea in theory. The Kings using their cap space to add additional assets is something I'd like to see.

This deal simultaneously appeases the people who want to improve the roster now by adding Miller, but also appeases people like me who want to keep tanking by acquiring and extra 1st from Vancouver.

But I don't think Vancouver is that desperate for cap space. They have 15M in room, and the only big contract they need to sign is Hughes. I think they'll be okay.

1) Canucks currently only have 16 players on their NHL roster under contract. So just signing 7 players for the minimum will cost $5.25M.
2) Elias Pettersson is also RFA. If you look at what Tampa Bay paid Cirelli and Sergachev last offseason, they are looking at almost $10M just for those two players plus $4M to fill out their roster next year.
3) They have more RFAs next season.
4) Canucks are in desperate need of a RHD now.

Fair. Hoven isn't 100% with his calls, but he is the most connected guy for the Kings right now.

Someone in the org could have very well told Hoven Iafallo was not resigning and that was true until someone folded last minute (probably Iafallo's camp considering we got a team friendly deal at 4x4).

In general, he gets a ton of rumors right and has been kind of an extension of what the org plans/says. IMO I think he has great reach within the fanbase, and Bluc know that and feed them info like that.

I would make this trade before the expansion draft. It would allow the Kings to protect Kale Clague. The Kings would protect Miller and likely expose Athanasiou.

You're right. I didn't see Pettersson when I was looking at their RFAs.

If the Canucks want long term contracts for both Pettersson and Hughes, that will probably take up 15M+ for just them.

I would probably do the deal you outlined. My only concern is Miller taking up another roster spot when we have lots of up and coming forwards. I suppose Miller could be moved for additional assets at the deadline if the situation calls for it.

People around here like Walker. I have nothing against him, but I think he's a dime-a-dozen NHL player so I have no qualms about losing him.

The Kings keep JT Miller and play him on the first line with Kopitar for at least one full season.

"greater than 0% chance"

Absolutely meaningless statement.

There's a greater than 0% chance Blake resigns as GM to pursue a career in teaching sea otters ballet.
Yeah, this was a stupid comment by Friedman -- at best a very poorly worded one. There's a greater than 0% chance that the LA Kings win the next 100 straight Stanley Cups (0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%). Some people are really bad at math (English too).

Speculation on NHL radio that the Blues Jaden Schwartz wants to play in LA next year.
He's a UFA coming off 21 points in 40 games and zero points in 4 playoff games.
Carried a $5.3M cap hit last year.

Can't see much reason for LA to sign that deal.
I’d rather sign Brandon Saad with that money myself.

Hoven’s last post on the Eichel rumors was tough to read. Just a lot of speculation and not having any real information from the organization.

Why would the Kings protect Athanasiou? I don’t even think he’s gonna sign a new contract with the Kings.

What if the Kings are in the cellar again come trade deadline? You still keep him?

While I like your deal, I still don't see the point of trying to improve this coming season's roster.

His deal is fantastic. You get Miller and an extra first round pick. So you get better now and in the future in exchange for a third pairing dman and moving back one spot in a suspect draft.
Kings take that deal and run.

It’s embarrassing that the Kings keep elevating these local amateur bloggers and podcasters. The only reason these hacks are allowed anywhere near a pro sports team is because nobody cares about hockey in LA. If this were a hockey town, these clowns wouldn’t even get so much as a retweet. It’d be like the Flyers giving Eklund a press pass.

I would think it's safe to assume that with any UFA, it's all 1 or 2 year deals that we want to see. That's why Landeskog ain't coming.

Walker is going to be protected, and I'd hold off on Strand replacing him just yet.

Because the one thing the Kings tire fire needs is Doughty drama.

Use some cap, improve the team, or at least the appearance of the team, and don't touch the good prospects. All of that can be done. Ownership just has to want to spend more than the least amount of money in the league.

Yeah I understand the thesis behind his proposal. Me personally though, I don't see the point in trying to improve the roster right now for this upcoming season.

I know others disagree, but I think if the Kings do nothing, they'll be in the running for Wright / Savoie / Lambert in the 2022 draft. I'd rather have that than a black hole season.

Whats more worth noting I think than the Eichel comments is how he said they may use their assets & flexibility to take advantage of the cap-strapped (and maybe teams in a bad spot for the expansion) teams to fill needs, he mentioned Tampa & Toronto, I can think of others but I won't name names because I'll just get told those players will never get traded, until they do.
