Many will not like to hear it, but Askarov failed the first test.
Yes.. but he's 17 (I think) and will grow from this experience. Not many 17 year old goalies win at the U20's. Nerves and youth can be a heck of a thing. I'd probably not play him against US/Canada.

Absolutely. I just mean the unneccesssary hype created by some fans who started claiming Russia to have the best goaltending in the tournament. 17 is 17, it's his first showing at a stage that big. I wonder though if he starts the Canada game now.

I wouldn't do it personally.. dominating U18 and U20 are 2 different animals. When he's 19 he'll be in the KHL or AHL.

I think a lot of people are confusing best prospect and best player.

He's by far the best prospect goalie.

Using forwards.. look at Lafrieniere last year as a 17 year old last year and this year as an 18 year old. He was a tremendous prospect last year and now he's a tremendous player.

I think it was more about the combination of Askarov and Miftakhov that is why people claim they have the best goaltending in the tournament. The USA with Knight and Wolf is probably the only other team that has two real high level goaltenders.

I think Zamula leaving Russia to go to Canada was a mistake. If you look at the results there’s no good Russian defensemen who came from the CHL.

He has the potential/tools to be decent but he’s not going to reach his potential over here. Playing in the MHL would’ve been much better for his development. Then a few years in the KHL, then maybe a chance at the NHL. But CHL to NHL is never happening. It’s just not a path that can work.

The record shows that you are correct. In many ways, the CHL is not a developmental league, as they play close to an NHL schedule. Lots of games, little time for practice. Most 17 and 18-year olds from Russia are still in a developmental stage. The language, cultural, and hockey philosophies are too different to learn in a year or two. That's why the vast majority end up failing to reach the NHL, and drop out of hockey. Zamula will certainly get a look in the NHL, but for the vast majority of Russian kids, its a failed experience.

Doesn't your team have a good Russian defensemen that came from the CHL?

He's only 1% of what he could have been if he stayed in Russia.

You are definitely correct, my calculations show that Provorov staying in Russia = Lidström in 2019. Unfortunately, his CHL lackluster switch made him a mere Aki Peteri Berg. :( Oh what could have been... And now Zamula with the same horrifying mistake.

Misyul and Kruglov added to the roster.

Oh boy, tomorrow's game will be fun. Adding Misyul to the roster would make a very solid D group even stronger. I don't recall the last time when Russia had such a strong D in the WJHC.

Just a random thought, is there a scenario where a KHL team not allow a player to go to the worlds ?
In the normal world of the 21th century, a (hockey) club is obligated to allow its players to join a National Team. So, no, there is not such a scenario at all.

It's actually a wrong approach. KHL should be a priority before an U20 tournament. I think, it's obvious, that the KHL hockey is better, than WJC one, not probably as enterttaining, but way better quality wise. It's better for young kids to play a harder hockey, than an easier one.
