Seems like an odd team to pick for a warm up. Is it just a geographical decision? Any of the other teams from the other group would probably be a better test.

Well, it's not about a win anyway.
Obviously but what are you really going to get out of this game from a decision making point of view? Personally I think playing teams that can push back a little bit and actually give you a chance to evaluate the team before the games matter is important.

In fairness, we play warm up games against Switzerland every year as well.

Kazakhstan makes sense as a warm up game, get some team bonding and an obvious game Russia should crush Kazakhstan.

I think, it actually doesn't matter, what team to play vs at this stage, because there will be 4 preliminary games anyway to get going before a real hockey starts in the playoffs.

It's hard to say right now.

You know I’m a big Askarov fan.

I figured there was no way that Bragin wouldn’t be bringing him when we chatted in the summer.

Not that your boys need Askarov to win this game, but it’d be nice to get a pre tournament look at him.

We have Miftakhov as well, who was very good vs CHL teams.

The Swiss finished 4th last year. Comparing them to Kazakhstan is insulting to the Swiss lol. If Russia had their team picked...but they need to make actual roster decisions and pick the team.

Doesnt the team still have cuts to make though? If not then I agree that it doesnt matter that much. If there are still cuts then it isnt a great decision imo

SKA line looks the best so far. Denisenko - Khovanov - Dorofeyev started to press Kazakh team in the second part of the period, other 2 lines didn't impress.

Same with Sweden, USA, and Finland. Overall, the non-attending stars are pretty similar for the big 5. No country should be complaining about missing star power since they're all missing about the same quality of talent.

Agreed for the most part. Sweden's defense looks insane though (but the poor centers kind of even it out).

Marchenko is the best player on the ice so far, I see, why the kid looks legit in the KHL. Good size, hands, skating... pretty much everything (failed a onetimer though at the end of the period). Columbus can get a solid player in him.
