Fine, 30 years then. Not much better .
I’m not calling them drafting gurus or anything, but over the span of the last 30 years, when taking into account all the years they didn’t even have picks in the 1st or 2nd rounds, and where they picked in the years they DID have day one picks, AND their literal horrendous history with bad luck/tragedy for those players (Cherepanov, Blackburn, Cherneski), and the team’s tendency to draft D in the first round (Sanguinetti, MDZ, Staal, McI, Miller, Lundkvist, etc), etc etc. All I’m saying is that, when taken in context, the Rangers drafting could be a LOT worse, historically.
Also, in those past drafts, we had rosters full of role players and no game breakers. Now, we have a MINIMUM of 4 game breakers (with several guys having the potential to join that group). A draft that produces a couple of Dubinsky/Callahan clones to supplement that group is something I’d sign up for right about now. Can you imagine the Black and Blueshirts, but with an elite top six (the Pack line relegated to 3rd line duty) and a drastically improved defense?
