I wouldn’t, but if I had Shest and Georgiev I wouldn’t be looking for a goalie in the draft.

They take 1 goalie every year. I don't think that's a bad strategy. Especially nowadays when we really don't want to be spending huge money on that position as we build out the team. The dynastys find a way to keep that goalie AAV down. So, I don't mind drafting a goalie as a strategy. And I mean how many 4th rounders ever make the NHL? I think every kid is just someone you take a flyer on at this point. No point in getting annoyed. That said, I'd like us to draft more centers or LDs...

You think they're not going to give Shestyorkin a huge contract?

Not specifically the goalie pick. I know you’re not likely getting a high end forward in the 4th. I mean more of their late 1st round/ 2nd round strategy. They don’t even give themselves a chance with these safe ass picks. We were foolish to think they would go after Lapierre.

While Tampa is drafting Kucherov and Point in the second and third rounds.

Yeah the almost all 1st round defense has nothing to do with that.

In case anyone wondered why the Rangers have never drafted and developed a star forward in 50 years, it’s because of these safe, low upside picks. Thank god for the lottery balls.

Lmao are you kidding?

they’re like 2 drafts removed from swinging for the bleachers with almost all of their picks, including all 3 in the first round.

In a vacuum no problem with taking a goalie every year. But crazy to leave some of the available forwards on the board. We know they rated Biondi, and they’ve already been burned on that one. MTL gave them a gift by taking Jack Smith at 102 with Biondi on the board, and we took a goalie. Not great. We’ve been taking big forwards yet they took the smallest goalie.

That post may not age well after January.

Marc Savard? Tony Amonte? Doug Weight? You could probably ice a whole team of guys just below the “Star player” threshold, too (Stepan, Dubinsky, Callahan, AA, Kreider, etc). Considering where they draft (or rather, where they DON’T draft) historically, they haven’t done THAT bad w/their picks.

Fine, 30 years then. Not much better .

and yes, until recently we’ve been drafting mid to late 1st, and we follow the same formula. Avoid star potential like the plague.
