Actually we can land 14 or 15, it would just be extremely unlikely. The teams who finish in the 13/14/15 could still land one or all of the top 3 picks and leapfrog Vancouver and bump every team back 1-3 spots. Again, its unlikely, so that's probably the exact scenario that will unfold for Vancouver.

Right, I forgot about that.

Seems like this year is very strong for mobile shutdown defensemen. How would people rank Sanderson, Guhle, Schneider and Barron? Justin Barron in particular I'm interested in, he's had a tough year with the blood clot but he was really a top contender coming into the year and might have a bit more offensive/transitional ability than Guhle and Schneider. Guhle's probably the best defensively and a bit more effortless skater than Schneider, but Schneider's a bit more proven in international competition.

The assumption has always been that if the Canucks lose their 'play-in series' against the Wild, they're automatically back in the draft lottery and their first found pick won't revert to the Devils until 2021.

But Pierre Lebrun on TSN reports this morning that at one least GM told him the pick has 'already been given up'. I assume this to mean that there's a possibility the Canucks have already walked away from the 2020 draft.

I hope this isn't the case....but on the day they formerly dumped Brackett, nothing would surprise me with this organization.

Why would you walk away from a pic before the very last minute? Then again Benning did give someone a retroactive NTC

On the benning press call thomas drance asked him about this and benning said that it was his understanding at the moment that the pick stays with us although he still needed confirmation. Benning would have to go insane in this situation to give up our pick this year given the opportunity we have here and the uncertainty of next season. But who knows for sure...

I'm hoping we'll have a 1st rounder this year, I'm not so hopeful about who we'll pick with no head scout anymore.

No picks until the 3rd round is depressing. I don't think we have the assets to aquire another pick in the first two rounds, but if there's a way Benning should consider getting another pick.

I wonder if Demko could fetch a late first round draft pick?

I personally like Barron as the best of those mentioned, but realize I may be in a minority. Thanks to the blood clot, he could be available right around where we pick, if we lose to the Wild.

Benning hasn't acquired a pick package since Lack in 2015 so don't hold your breathe.

A few question regarding the confusing lottery system

If Canucks lose to the wild what's the worst possible draft spot they could land? Assuming no teams behind them win the lottery 13th?

And if a play in team wins a lottery spot then does that mean all 8 teams eliminated get a 12.5 chance to get the lottery pick and what if a play team wins 2 lottery spots does that odd increase?

I think someone projected worst to be 12 pending who wins all the play-in rounds. But also if the 3 teams behind them (in 13/14/15 spot) could technically win all three lotteries and bump them to 15. It's highly improbable, but possible.

The irony of it all, is that if the Canucks lost a hard-fought five-game series against the Wild....and then against all odds moved up in the draft lottery for a change, either into the top 10 or maybe even the top five, the year overall would have to be considered a big 'success'.

I know the odds are long that it comes down that way.....but the fact is the Canucks 'rebuild' is still a work in progress.

Maybe it's just an impression. But for the GM of a team that's basically been a 'lottery team' for most of his six years at helm, Benning sure seems to me to have traded a lot of draft picks for immediate, short term help.

If the Canucks are knocked out by the Wild, and then their pick falls in the 9 to 13 range, I think you have to keep it. With the pick I would love to see the Canucks take Seth Jarvis. But regardless, you should be able to get a good player in that range this year.

I always thought we decide on when to give up the pick when the lottery draft order is finalized? either way if we can't beat the Wild in a best of 5, a team that also were a selling team at draft deadline we have no business being in the playoffs period.

That he has. He passed Gillis’s for total picks moved near the end of year 4 I think can’t recall exactly.

Just a note here: the Canucks have no decisions to make with this pick, it's triggered by making the playoffs or not (making playoffs counts as being the winner of the Play-In round vs Minnesota).
