I think Lafreniere was pretty noticeable and looked like he belonged. Can’t say that unfortunately for the other youngins.
Even against a a suffocating team. He fanned on a great chance and almost put one in up close.

Eh, he was ok. But one thing to remember is that he has not taken part in an actual game in a very long time. Scrimmages are one thing. Real game is something else.

I liked what I saw from Laf. Give the devil their due the Isles are tough defensively and don’t give you much room out there but I Thought he moved the puck well. I’m sure he was nervous and hadn’t played much like most of the guys do it will be an adjustment

I see a lot of hate on the kakko thread....is it time to label laf and kakko as total busts yet?
No. Alf looked solid, albeit not amazing, which was expected in his first NHL game without a preseason. He had some promising moments in the beginning, although the team as a whole kind of deflated later on. With Kakko, I expected him to come out and play like an animal after his great play in the bubble, or at least show some noticeable improvement. He wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t good. If the rest of his season goes like this, we have a problem. He’s not a rookie anymore. And he technically has some NHL “playoff” experience.

The bigger issue is that we might have a development problem. Not one player that we drafted in YEARS, if you don’t include goalies, has really shown noticeable improvement while with the team or with Hartford. Not Andersson. Not Chytil. Not Kravtsov. Not Kakko. Not Gettinger or few other late round picks. Lafreniere, Miller, Barron, etc. remain to be seen. Maybe it’s just a numbers thing, seeing as the vast majority of prospects don’t play more than a few NHL games, let alone become significant contributors. I mean, Buchnevich seems to have developed well in our system, but he was NHL ready instantly when he got here.

Maybe I’m over-exaggerating. Maybe I’m worried about our system because Chytil doesn’t seem to be playing much better either. And I’m pretty sure some of the 2017 draft class is making an impact already. Anyways, I’ll try to be more patient, but these are high draft picks we’re talking about that got a lot of hype.

When was this? Genuinely curious.
Pull up a seat.

Ahem.

It was the dawning of a new era (literally). Some time off and a couple...major tweaks to the rules, followed by a wave of the greatest draft in NHL history crashing down on vets from a different time and place.

Teams were scoring (and allowing) 300 goals a season. Power plays were handed out like candy on Halloween. Save percentages plummeted. f***ing aerodynamic jerseys. 6 goals per game on a bad night. Teenagers were scoring 100 points. The Red Wings were winning enough games to clinch two playoff spots. The Hurricanes had a good goalie. Chaos...

After a decade of drowsiness, it was all offense, all the time. Lindy Ruff’s moment had arrived.

Afinogenov, Briere, Campbell, Vanek, Drury, Pominville, Kotalik, Roy, Stafford, Connolly, Hecht, Miller, Numminen, Gaustad. A team with so much talent they named two captains. And their was no one better to let them run wild than Ruff.

589 goals
.68 PTS%
52+ wins (2)
Conference Finals (2)

It was, in a word, scary.

We will never see a team that exciting ever again. Combine a party of fast, skilled, top-6 forwards in their prime, a few slick puck-moving defensemen, a head coach who doesn’t give one molecule of f***s about defense, and penalties called for breathing on someone. It was the perfect storm.

Some people have described Crosby as an elite grinder.

Lafreniere’s play without the puck last night was very reminiscent of Jesper Fast. At 19, in his 2nd NHL game, he is already setting the tone and pace for how this team needs to play. All over the ice. No pre-season games.

I’ve never seen a player look this comfortable 48 hours into his career.

Elite grinder is a very good description. When he was prime, he was able to play and thrive in any type of game, whether it was a track meet or a close quarters contest.

I think you're going to see more incremental progress on the rangers than you see on other teams. The rangers have the benefit of being able to rely on two legit super stars in Panarin and Zbad. So our young players aren't put in a position as much to elevate their game under fire. Other high prospects in other systems are usually entering situations where the team is crap and have to play first line minutes right away. Naturally they are going to put up bigger numbers since they have to be "the guy."

He was a puck protection wizard in his prime. If he had the puck below the dots, you weren't getting it back.

Datsyuk was the same way.

He was never the flashy, balletic player. He just did everything well.

Anyone been watching Tim Stutzle so far? While I think Laf has had a good start, TS looks so dynamic. Can't help to wonder if he may become the better player. Time will tell I guess, but I'm just surprised that TS didn't get more consideration as a possible 1OA pick.

Stützle has had a great start to his NHL career and has not looked out of place, same with Lafrenière. The only difference is that one already scored a goal.

Once Lafrenière pots a few, I'm sure we will see people come around on him. I have followed Stützle for a few years, even a game he played here in Vienna. It was amazing. He was only 17 years old at the time but he was easily the best one on the ice.

Is this because he scored?

I haven't watched much of the Sens (I caught a period on Friday and instantly got bored) but what else has he done?

AL has that Crosby like work ethic with and without the puck.

I'm seriously more impressed by this kid with the little things. The little plays he does with the puck along the boards to absorb a hit. His awareness and IQ in the d zone is very evident for someone with 2 NHL games experience.

I can see him being a 3 zone monster like Ziba where is always in the right spot to make a play. His release is very quick. Guys like Kaako and Chytil have struggled to get their shot off in traffic because they wait so long whereas AL seems to sacrifice a little oomph on his shot just to place it to get through.

He had one shot in traffic that was the perfect "pad pass" that Strome missed the rebound on because AL got his shot through.

This kid is gonna be a crowd favorite very very soon.

Lafreniere looks as advertised so far. He has a strong 200ft game and is always reading the play and getting in the right position.

He can have a good game w/o getting on the scoresheet and to me that is huge, especially for a young player. The pts would come based on his positioning alone but add his skill and the sky is the limit.

Hes also pretty damn strong already he does not shy away from boardwork and net front battles. I cant wait to see this guy put it all together.

Wouldnt be surprised to see him with the C sooner than later.
