Prospect Info: 2020 NHL Draft 19th Overall Pick, Braden Schneider, D

@Edge said he was 12th on the rangers list. the other 11 were gone after montreal took guhle. so most likely they wanted schneider at that pick and were looking to jump ahead of both of NJ's picks

I wasn't even referring specifically to Lapierre. In general I am concerned about the C position after Zibanejad. We have so little depth that doesn't come with big question marks. The team isn't high on Strome. Chytil is far from a sure thing to become a 2C. Barron appears to project as a bottom 6 guy. I know we have a lot of assets and will no doubt be dealing some for a C. But we will definitely need more in the pipeline.
 
Few quotes about Schneider on the main board.

The more I watch of Schneider the more I start to prefer him over Guhle. I'd say he's the 2nd best defenseman coming out of Canada this draft. Possibly the best defenseman in the entire draft defensively right now.

I think he's got the floor of Scandella/Hamonic, ceiling of Parayko.

Big physical D that is excellent defensively. Don't see a ton of offense but think he plays in the top 4 in the NHL. Predicting he gets picked top 20.

I have him ranked 2nd amongst defensemen... Most steady defenseman in the draft...

Gotta think the Leafs are looking at Schneider with the 15th overall pick. He'd be a perfect fit there.

He's very smart defensively

I get Kevin Bieksa vibes from Schneider. Kid is definitely a gamer. I can see him going anywhere from 10 - 15

He is excellent. So composed. Drysdale is a different level of prospect but I think I’d actually be happier with Schneider making the WJC team this year.

Yep, excellent breakout passer. I don't think this guy knows what colour the puck is, his head is always up

He'll never be a flashy player but he's just so effective shutting down the attacking forwards and moving the puck up ice

We all see the roster yet i get the feeling from a high percentage posters that there is some unwritten deadline.

Should they have done something night one of the draft? Do they need to do something today?

A year from now, Eichel still isn't happy and Buffalo is re-engaging teams about what they'd offer.

The Rangers coming into this draft, had a top tier prospect/young player pool. They're still going to be in that conversation a year from now. Buffalo knows this.

So there's not Laf or Kakko on the table. But Kravtsov could be. Chytil. Lundkvist certainly could be. Same for Schneider --- especially if we're "unfortunate" enough to have him progressing well and ready to turn pro.

Now you've got some options and you could, possibly, fill two other positions (LD and Center), while still having a damn nice RD trio when you emerge on the other side of those deals.

Obviously that's just one example, and I'm using it because it is top of mind. But you get the general idea of where you might use players.

This does seem, again, to be the Rangers MO.

Build up D through the draft. Trade for or sign forwards.

Honestly I think it's more about forwards falling and people wanting someone like Bourque, Zary, or Lapierre. And then "supporting" that dissatisfaction by trying to argue Schneider was a reach.

Yes, I did say that Kournianos and Pronman had Schneider in the 30s. That was in response to the assertion, though, that Schneider was across the board in the top 15.

That is not true.

So yeah, facts be damned.

I'm also relatively certain that simply put Schneider was not universally in the top 15. Some higher, some lower.

This was a good range for him, but let's not pretend it was a consensus steal.

trade ADA for a bag of pucks now and plug in nils next season. tonys too small. (pssst, they are the same size ) too slow. too political. too weak defensively. easily replaced.

Yeah I was referring to you with the mention of the two rankings, but not necessarily referring to you with calling him a reach. That was like the only post I've seen of yours. I don't know why you're getting all bent out of shape.

Who called him a consensus steal? I even said I didn't like the pick. :laugh:

If you think that was an appropriate spot for him, good on you, my post wasn't directed at you and you can untwist your panties.

I think organizationally they overvalue defensemen then.

I'm not slamming this particular pick. Schneider is solid value.

But time and time again they seem to over prioritize defensemen; whether it is consciously or not.

Also, it's not like they just let the board come to them. They actually traded up to target a defenseman. So they were actively seeking one.
 
I was fast asleep whilst this pick was being made, but was quite amazed we moved up/we didn’t get Lapierre.

Is this guy really (miles) ahead of Lapierre, potential wise? Honest question, since it isn’t that easy to follow North-American prospects if you live in Europe.

No. It would appear not. They mentioned that Lapierre would be in the top 5 if not for the medical issues. And Schneider is likely a 2nd pair D, but is almost a certainly to play years in the NHL. So Lapierre is a much higher risk reward selection.

It's highlights and stuff but in general watching him he seems to quite good at positioning and decision making and being aggressive with his decision making. He doesn't look indecisive about anything, he makes his decision and makes it quickly and acts on it and it's often the correct decision.
Seems to have good fundamentals for a defenseman as well. Even when he's going for a hit he often seems to be trying to get the puck first
Not a really sexy pick but I can see why they really liked him so much...if he pans out I think he's the kind of guy you can have in your lineup for a decade or so as the hard to play against defensive guy who isn't gonna hurt you when it comes to moving the puck

The more I read the more i'm pretty alright with this pick. He definitely needs some more work with his agility and East/West skating, and he is never going to play on a PP, but he is the perfect player to pair up with a Fox/DeAngelo/Lundkvist (someone move to the left).

Very similar to how Lindgren is perfect with Fox.

(decent mix of size and skill) Even the size has some decent skill. I think all of our LHD are interchangeable at this moment with K'Andre having the biggest boom potential. Seems like RHD are little more touted right now.
This draft made it obvious the Rangers were not gonna have 70-80 percent of their d and "undersized" and their forwards "easy" to play against.
Just glad they are drafting bigger guys who can still skate.
