For anyone that has an Athletic subscription, Scott Wheeler just posted an article this morning about teams draft needs for the top 15 picks, and a potential pick for each team.

Here’s what he wrote about the Rangers

13. New York Rangers

Position of need: Forward
Pick: LW Dylan Holloway

The Rangers are the last team that's going to say, "You know what we need more of? Good young defencemen and goalies?" As such, you can all but pencil them in for a forward here. I don't think the position of the forward will be of particular concern to them. They've got Vitali Kravtsov coming on the wing and Morgan Barron as a potential third-line centre but they're not a position to be picky up front. Holloway's speed and physical traits would give their pool a different element, one that players like Kravtsov, Lauri Pajuniemi, Karl Henriksson and Leevi Aaltonen tend to lack. They would've got a good look at him while scouting and evaluating K'Andre Miller at the University of Wisconsin this year, as well.

Wouldnt mind Holloway but he’s wrong in his assessment that we’re picking a F for sure here

This is a year where if the Rangers were to trade in the draft, it would be up for one of those stud center prospects. I doubt they trade back unless their draft board goes completely south in the plan.
I actually do not see them drafting up or down. I do not think that they will be in a position to move up meaningfully.

Holloway is a good pick at 13. He's a kid who can potentially step into the void left by Kreider when the time comes. Has better tools at the same age but can play a similar style of game.

That being said, I really doubt the Rangers will be thinking about having too many defensemen in the system when they make the pick. You can always trade good young players for other good young players if need be. So focus on taking the guy you think has the best shot of being a great player and worry about positional need later on.

I’m assuming you’re referring to Sanderson

He gets taken by the Wild at 11 in Wheelers article
Wheeler is an idiot. Only thing he’s right on is his love for Adam Fox. I’m not sure why Minny goes Sanderson when they have a great D with Suter, Brodin, Dumba, Spurgeon, Mennell, Soucy, Seeler. Then again they did pick Filip Johansson 24th overall. I’d go with Mercer/Zary if I were them or even try to move up. I think they can contend for the cup if they get someone like Rossi as their 1C and Kaprizov comes over next year

Zary does make sense. They have overhauled their WHL scouting recently, and the Robertson pick looks to be a good one.

Do I expect Zary to come in here and be a superstar? No. But I think if put with Panarin he can grow into the number 1 spot once Mika slows down. The guy does it all in the WHL, can score pass, and play in all situations. While I don't think he'll be a Crosby or McDavid I think he'll be a well respected player around the league kind of like Yzerman or Sakic were.

Other tidbits from that Wheeler article I posted yesterday I found interesting

- He would not be surprised if Kaiden Guhle is the second defenseman taken after Drysdale, apparently a lot of scouts he's talked to are very high on Guhle

- Believes there is a high chance of the Devils taking Jack Quinn with Arizona's pick (which currently sits at #10)

- Thinks it's 50/50 Askarov is taken in the top 15

I like Zary. From what I've seen (Just the games against Seattle), he is definitely a skilled player we can use. I would be happy with him at 13, assuming none of the center prospects projected to go top 10, drop that far
