Yes, I definitely get that vibe from the Rangers.

There's more mixed reactions around other parts of the league, but the Rangers love the progress and the potential.

I can certainly "get" what they're envisioning. Sanderson isn't necessarily a kid who you draft because you think he's necessarily had the best results to this point. He's a kid you draft because you feel he's closing the gap and is going to surpass some of the other talents.

I think people get caught up expecting more point totals from him --- and I think some of those numbers could come with time. But I also think Sanderson isn't necessarily an offensive numbers guy. I think his speed steers certain opinions in that direction and influences opinions, but I don't know if he'll ever be a guy who wows you with offensive numbers.

What some people do believe he can be, is a guy in the Bouwmeester mold. In addition to potentially being the best player on the board when the Rangers pick, it could also be a scenario where you have a player who is an ideal fit for the way the team is structured.

But it all depends on where the Rangers are picking. If they're in that 8-12 range, he could be their guy. If they are picking in the late teens and beyond, he'll be off the board.

Hoping Sanderson isn’t their pick, but if they believe him to be their guy it’s hard not to fault them for it.

Just think it’s a mistake taking a defender (other than Drysdale) early in the draft with all those centers there. If they pick around No. 15, then it makes sense to reach on Sanderson (to much dislike).

I guess, but a big part of me wants to be all-in on a future defense core of DeAngelo, Trouba, Fox, Lundkvist, Miller, and Lindgren/Robertson.

Just teach one of the righties to play off side. Just one of them! Someone has to be able to figure it out.

That's a sick looking group.

Assuming all 3 of Robertson, Lundkvist and Miller can play in the NHL and actually contribute, sure. That's a sick looking group

I haven't watched much of the USNDP this year but I would assume one of the reasons Sanderson is rising is due to the weakness of defensive prospects this year in the first round. Drysdale is really the only one I've seen that's consistently being talked about as a top 10-15 pick.

tankathon has us with a 1% chance of winning 1st overall pick. it took me about 10 sims, but i got that f***ing 1st overall pick!

and chicago won the 2nd overall pick. imagine the reaction if against all odds the rangers and hawks won the draft lottery in back to back years..

So no one here is a Foudy?
I still like the athletic skillset, but his ceiling is pretty low at this point due to his issues playing with the puck and utilizing his teammates. As of right now, he's just a really fast kid that has great forechecking skills. That alone is going to get him drafted decently high because the team that takes him knows they'll be getting a high-end bottom-6 player when he's in his prime.

I think Steve is spot on in his assessments on both.

Admittedly, I tend to agree with Steve on most evaluations, but I don't know if I'd say anything different than what he wrote.

Ironically enough, I was having a conversation about those two exact players not too long before that article came out.

Holloway seems like the classic Rangers gamble on a specimen prototype that never works. Or works, but you get a low offense middle sixer.

I think if moving up isn’t an option I’d want Mysak and Zary with those two picks.

I don’t know if I’d call him a specimen by any means. I think he’s more of a Swiss Army knife player who also happens to be a good fit for the team. Wouldn’t take him top 10, but I can dig him at 15. Especially if you go with more of an offensive gamble with the second pick.

Did I miss the Jack Quinn discussion? Certainly have my eye on that one.
Definitely.

When we were hovering around a top 10 pick area, my priority was Rossi but he will go too 5 now so I then settled on Perfetti but we seem too far gone for that.

Quinn seems like a great choice.

Isn't Quinn riding shotgun to one of the great center prospects? After my ill-advised love affair with Grachev back in the day, I've learned to be wary of such players.

Take a mid-round/UDFA flyer on someone like Elmer? (Or, actually, even Evgeny, who we took in the 3rd and I just hyped way too much in my own mind.) Sure. Use a first round pick to draft one...? I'm extremely hesitant.

I think Holloway is an NHLer. If the offense doesn't work, he becomes a solid speedy winger who can PK, and forecheck.

It's looking like the Rangers may end up with picks in the 13-16 range and the 19-23 range.

Say you end up with 14 & 19. Who do you take?

Prior to @Edge mentioning him in the context of the Rangers, I had recently read several articles that mentioned him as a riser who’s been rapidly climbing the ranks since the holidays. Why do you dislike him? Any reason other than the org’s perceived depth at LD?
I don’t dislike him, he’s a good prospect but to me he lacks the upside to be a top 20 pick in a draft as strong as this and also I don’t want to use one of our first 3 picks on an LHD preferably.

Depends on which rankings/mock we’re looking at.

I could be happy with Holloway and Mysak according to TSN.

I could be happy with Sanderson/Zary and Smilanic off the Tankathon rankings.

ESPN mock would have me taking Zary and Holloway at 14 and 19.

Those are just some scenarios for me at this point.
