There’s always alternatives. The goaltending position is becoming more and more like the running back position in the NFL. Goalies emerge and fall by the way-side pretty quickly.

Realistically you’re probably getting some kind of drop off if you replace Grubauer, but I also think the Avs defence/team structure make it easier for goalies to have success.
Agree and disagree. Agree in the sense that goaltenders are the NHL's version of NFL running backs, however look at the goaltenders remaining: 3 of the 8 are Vezina finalists and that list doesn't even include Connor Hellebuyck, Carey Price, or Tuukka Rask.

Yep, and that would be the risk.

Average goalies have gone on a hot streak to win cups, but the goaltending position is so much more important in the playoffs than in the regular season.

The position is just so volatile that I’m very concerned about long term contracts.

I'm telling you from now Ken Holland is going to zero in on Grubauer, buy out Neal and pay a team to take Koskinen. He's going to overpay for Grubauer, too. He was ready to do it last summer with Markstrom.
Grubauer loves cycling and the outdoors life, so somehow I can't see him choosing to go play in Edmonton, especially considering that he won't be short of good offers from teams in more desireable locations.

Does Winnipeg have enough parks yet?

He'll crack a window and cycle on a stationary bike if Holland throws enough millions at him.

One thing the Avs have going for them with Grubauer (outside the best chance at future Cups) is they don't really have anyone that appears to be a threat to take his starter role.

Franky would be the only guy but he didn't outplay him last year IMO and he's injury prone. He's not a young guy either, he's a year older than Grubauer.

Annunen has been a little up and down, and would have to put together at least a couple good seasons as an NHL backup before he becomes a threat to Grubauer, and he's probably a year or two away from being a potential NHL backup in the first place.

Not having a viable alternative in-house doesn't improve the Avs bargaining position with Grubuaer. In fact it does the opposite given that Grubauer has more leverage.

It definitely makes them a more desirable location than a team with someone who may take his job away. He's only had a chance to be a full time starter for a couple years now.

So if the numbers are close that can play a big factor in Grubauer staying.

Any team paying him $6m+ would want him to be their undisputed No.1.

Yeah they'd want him to be, but we've seen over the years that it doesn't always work out that way.

Florida's going through it right now. They've got Bob locked up at $10M for 5 more years with Spencer Knight knocking on the door.

Grubauer has been really good and should be re-signed but the Avs team defense is also among the best in the league. So if there's a bidding war then I think the Avs could still be okay with one of the inferior options. Someone like Andersen in free agency or maybe Elvis.

Shocking as this may be, but Edmonton actually has the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America which includes 11 lakes and 22 ravines.

Now, you'll only ever get to use it during the months of July and August and that's if it isn't hailing golf balls, but she's there!

You can argue the positives of Edmonton forever, but it is still Edmonton.

**** you we've got West Edmonton Mall baby. All the big boys want to come here. Ask Ryan Whitney.

Just had to share what the guy said on Chiclets lol:

"I lived there. I've played there. I got sh*t on. I went to the 14 different Aldos at the West Edmonton Mall. I went to Cactus Club. Waitresses were beautiful didn't talk to one of 'em. I saw Mike Comrie ask for the "Billionaire's Cut" even though it was called the "Millionaire's Cut" steak but he was so rich he called it the "Billionaire's Cut" always made me laugh. I had to plug my god damn car in at night so it started in the morning because it's so ****ing cold in Edmonton. I never got to play in the new rink, though. I got to walk through the hallway, from the dressing room to the ice and Dustin Penner looked at me my first game and said "wait 'till you hear the verbal abuse I take on this walk out." And then the doors went open and all of a sudden it was "PENNER YOU FAT F**K YOU PIECE OF SH*T YOU LAZY F**K OH MY GOD HOW DO THEY PAY YOU THIS YOU PIECE OF SH*T F***K YOU PENNER" Penner was like our best player, too."

Columbus only made the playoffs 1 time out of their first 12 seasons, and they got swept in the first round.

Jarmo shouldn't get credit for being slightly better than abysmal. His record hasn't been much better.

Since Jarmo took over, they've made the playoffs 5 out of 8 seasons, barely sneaking in as the Wild Card team in 4 of the 5 (if you count their 9th place finish last year as the Wild Card) and they've only made it past the first round once in is tenure, losing in the second round.
Doug MacLean doesn’t get enough run in worst GM discussions. The most entertaining part of his show with Brian Burke is when ever they had to tap dance around their past screw ups.

I think that's probably because everyone realizes what an awful GM he is at this point, so it just feels like you're beating up someone who just got pulverized for 12 rounds by Mike Tyson.

It also helps that he himself acknowledges how bad of a GM he was with his draft misses and poor trades. At least the guy is self aware unlike that moron Chiarelli.

That was an epic set up and you’d think a millionaire like Whitney would have a garage.
