not the system, it's the players who don't shoot, and just aren't good enough yet.

I feel two ways about Todd. I like the way he is handling the transition decently enough. He has been supportive of young players to an extent, while trying to be successful and I applaud that. As far as systems go though, I am not a fan of the 1-3-1 and hearing Wrob talk about the difficulties in teaching Kaliyev that system frustrated me.

Haha, TMac not so subtley calling out Kopitar. Kopitar was bad tonight, there no other way to put it. Did he even have a shot on goal or was it his usually passing night?
Kopitar,Brown,Quick & to a lesser extent,Doughty, have all given up. Since 2017 they have not been able to sustain any kind of success. It has taken its toll. I happen to also think that they don't believe in Tmac's system. Or they are just not capable of running it effectively. This team lacks any type of identity.

The system?
Three individual mistakes led directly to each goal. System ain't got nothing to do with that. Petersen, Byfield, Athanasiou - one let in a softy, one got caught a little slow along tbe wall in his first game at this speed and one got walked.

Kopitar and Brown were sloppy with the puck, but the rest of the team generated plenty of chances.

How was any of this to blame on the system?

I somewhat agree, but I have been happy with Doughty this season. Dude is still laying it all on the line and playing top notch hockey. He may have lulls, but he has done a fantastic job post contention with rookies and long in their tooth partners.

the only criticism i can level against doughty is his usual habit of trying to make cutesie plays that his teammates can't keep up with and quite frankly that's a BS criticism. the guy makes everyone he plays with look great, "given up" isn't fair at all imo. what i'm not happy about is how not only does kopitar look gassed, he looks like he's been running on E for years and it ain't gonna get any better. but f*** me right, he's PPG with a nonfunctional power play... again i don't think he's given up, he's just... an old mule. still gets the job done without looking pretty but doesn't do the extra things any more

i think the identity concerns are valid though and i'm losing confidence that the 1-3-1 is any way to pry identity out of them. i just feel like the vets got the shit pounded out of them by the cups and sutter, they're just emotionally flat and go through the motions.. and it's hard to get modern kids excited about systems play unless they're seeing Ws or their leaders are excited about it too. though i gotta say the forecheck early tonight looked way more aggressive than it did previously. sometimes i feel like tmac could just let them f***in play and they would probably do alright..

i dunno man, i find myself just looking at this season as pointless to try and take anything from. just get some rounds in for the kids and expect more from them next season. maybe i'm being stockholm syndromed, maybe tmac has some great multiyear plan in place to surprise everyone with.. f*** it.

In the end, it was exciting. I really love his skating and vision. You can clearly see that he has the hockey sense to be great. At least there is something to look forward to seeing the rest of the season...
No. He has no hockey sense. A guy with good game IQ would know everyone else isn’t on the same wavelength and therefore not ready for his quality passes.

Seriously though, it just shows everyone spouting about his poor game IQ were just repeating stuff they had read written by people talking out of their rear ends. I’d consider putting Vilardi on his wing so we’d have two high IQ guys on the ice together. They need someone that will be on the same wavelength and I’m struggling to think who else qualifies on the Kings roster right now.

You get so offended and immediately make it a class warfare issue, no one is saying millionaires will be broke. I'm simply stating a fact as to one of the reasons the Kings have struggled to attract FA's.

He'd be taking home less than 50% of his salary if he signs with the Kings and a lot more if he signed with most other US based teams.
If they are paying the 50% then their tax attorneys are not doing their jobs. I bet what they actually pay is nowhere near that, but yes it’ll be higher but not on the whole salary. They only pay 50% on what they get when working in California from what I understand especially if they have an official ‘home’ elsewhere. It’s much more complicated than that but they certainly aren’t paying 50% on everything. This is why signing bonuses are important to players because if they claim residency say in Florida, they likely avoid tax on it altogether .

Boy, I'm sure glad that JAD got scratched so that TMc could continue his insane MacDermid fetish
Andersson was an emergency call up, so can only have been called up for a player doubtful to play in the lineup due to injury. When they do the call up they need to say who the call up is to cover, so they can’t put Andersson in for anyone for tactical reasons. So in the case of JAD if that’s who Andersson he played instead of it means he is unfit (or in COVID protocol possibly).

Kinda get the feeling this is 2006 to 2012 all over again.....coach trying to nail down defensive system, stifling offense somewhat etc, I think it's something that the kids need but I think ultimately it will clost McCellan his job 2-3 years down the road.

Byfield didn't belong with this group, he was energetic, moving, fluid, quick shifts, etc, great skater. He didn't get a real good opportunity to show if he has hands, not like Vilardi did, god that kid has hands of silk and skates of cement, that's unfortunate.

Byfield is gonna be a solid solid player in the league for a long time....

Doesnt seem to be an issue for the Lakers, Dodgers, or Rams. Most any California team, really.

Very true. You cannot teach that type of skill but, you can teach skating. Hopefully it's something he focuses on and can improve even if it's marginal, it will make a difference to his overall game.

Vilardi often stickhandles through 2 defenders and there's nobody available to accept a pass. Then that 3rd defender comes and eventually he loses the puck before he can make a play. Line juggling hasn't been kind to him so far. He needs that Frk type of linemate that knows his tendencies to ride shotgun with him.

Yup, you’re “just making a comment” and I’m “so offended”. :eyeroll:

I still see Vilardi's skill each game. He needs consistent line mates for sure. Would have liked to see Frk with him this season.

Kopitar with probably his worst game of the season. Interestingly enough, Byfield was probably the best King on the ice.

Vilardi's future is as a winger, and I'm not worried about him in the slightest, with all the other kids on this team that can f***ing fly.

I mean imagine somethign even currently of Kempe-Byfield-Vilardi, never mind adding guys like Kupari, Turcotte in the near future. Vilardi's foot speed isn't going to be a hindrance for a guy with those instincts. If Corey dumpster dinner Perry can have a great career, there's no reason Vilardi can't.

At this point Im not sure Walker would be taken if he was exposed. Id try to keep Clague.

Walker is not a long term option as the 2nd PP QB. He has a weak shot and seems to have lost his abililty to break out with the puck and keep posession. I hope his injury has not affected his game and it is only a slump. I am on the fence now about protecting Walker over Clague.

I would protect these players with 2 slots open for a forward and 1 for a d man.

Kopitar-Iafallo-Kempe-AA-Moore - xx-xx
Doughty-Roy -xx
