Problem is that...

Edler is pretty good when established in both OZ and DZ. Solid 2nd pairing guy.

But his transition play is awful. If they are running the same 2-1-2 he seems a pretty poor fit on paper.

Bad at blue-line. Bad at out-lets. Bad at entries.

Might work as a rental. But he is a lefty as well. And I guess on paper given strengths has to really play with either Provorov or maybe Ghost to form a pair on paper that might work.
Ideally I want Ghost to gel with Provorov on the first pair, Sanheim-Myers (when healthy), and Edler with Gus or Braun on the third pair with a sizeable chunk of their minutes coming on the PK. Edler also had a good connection with AV and had the best years of his career under him. Although this could lead to AV over using him.
I definitely prefer him as a rental to a costly player that will require expansion protection.

Pretty sure Edler doesn't want to leave Vancouver. And I know he doesn't like playing the right side.

Still think they are best riding out with what they have for now. With the way this team is playing, you are more than a defenseman away from turning it around. It also leaves for screwy individual player evaluations.

You're right. No reason to continue this discussion if that is how you feel.

Jones is good. Better than Provy even. Not saying otherwise. I just can't see how that would end up being a sensible trade given all of the factors at play.

I dont know, columbus is in the giving mood these days, it seems. Weve got an overrated, 1 dimensional #2 overall and a late 1st round 3rd liner laying around, too. If we can pull that deal off, i guess i'd consider it.

Jones is better than every defenseman on our team. If there's a chance you can get him without completely overpaying, you do it. Especially when he's a RHD, the exact spot we're looking for improvement.

Ugh.

Patrick not practicing with the team, but out with Coots and Myers?

Is that a good sign or bad sign?

Jones:

Produces less than Sanheim. Slightly more than Provorov at 5v5.
With worse relative offensive and defensive underlying stats than both.
Cant defend a blue-line.
In easier minutes than Provorov.

He is a good player.

But I dont know why he is universally considered:

Good defensively.
A legit #1.

I think he is simply a good #2. Like Provorov at this venture.

There is more to being a #1 than being a top 10 pick, big, and having high TOI.

Yeh, he would be a very nice add! But at what cost?

Its entirely possible he just needed a day off. Its also entirely possible he had a mild migraine today and they didnt want to risk it. People (not you specifically) are going to need to come to terms with the fact that this is likely going to be the case for the rest of his career. Migraines aren't broken fingers that get back to 100% and youre good to go. Patrick could be fine one minute and in the corner in the fetal position vomiting the next. It just comes with the territory, unfortunately.

Another player who is just too soft for the NHL and can't play through the pain smh

It's just a headache, take a Tylenol and suck it up

Not to mention you can't make that trade before the ED, unless one of Provorov/Sanheim/Myers goes the other way, which leaves us barely any better off than we are now.

If it's after the ED, we're giving up a crap ton for 1 year and then UFA.

Well, the only thing I can say is I completely disagree lol. But that's ok, we don't always have to agree.

Not only do I think he's a clear #1 defenseman, I think he's a top 10 defenseman in the league.

Jones and Provorov- Universal 1D’s who might not even be the best on their own team.
In important games Jones and Provorov are eating up more minutes than anyone else on the team. They're the most trusted when it counts. There are going to be seasons where Werenski, Sanheim, even Ghost are better than Jones/Provy, but that doesn't mean they're better players.

Well two things

1) They get the most minutes because the coaches decide how much guys play. And we know coaches are far from flawless, so that isn't proof of anything.

2) If Jones and Provy were clear #1s then there'd also be years when they were the best defensemen on their teams, but...

Ghost, Sanheim, or Werenski outplaying is the norm, not an outlier.

And Filppula was our 2C chasing Crosby around in the playoffs one year...

Lets see you try to argue now, smart guy.

"Coaches tell me who's best." You sure you want to ride or die with that?

This has nothing to do with Jones or Provy or anyone else. They're good players.
