To be fair, the 2013 series doesn't mean anything either except for bragging rights between the two fan bases: just like 2011 and '16.
.

It was more to that IMO because SJ was playing really good hockey going into the playoffs. I was worried if they got past LA they had a shot to beat Chicago. I know the Hawks were the better team but SJ seemed hungry that year.

Even though they went to the cup in 2016, their best window was the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Again, just my thoughts to this.

Perhaps the Kings should try this again with the Oilers when Connor McDavid inevitably demands a trade.

From the standpoint of raising the awareness of hockey in the sunbelt for fans this deal was great.

It didn't quite meet our expectations in terms of on-ice performance, especially in the playoffs.

Despite having Gretzky, those Kings teams were so flawed with an imbalanced lineup. They upset the defending Cup champions in back-to-back years in Gretzky’s first two seasons here, but then got swept by the eventual Cup champs in those years (Flames in ‘89 and Oilers in ‘90).

The next couple of years they couldn’t get by Edmonton and were always decimated by injuries during the playoffs, and it wasn’t until ‘93 when they finally enjoyed some post season success.

The Kings likely don’t accomplish any of that without the trade. Unfortunately, a lot of poor choices by management and a crooked owner is what held the team short from greatness.

You look at the teams that won Cups from Gretzky’s time here and they just couldn’t match the depth of those teams. Montreal I guess was an even matchup but their team defense and goaltending was far superior.

Sometimes I wonder if holding onto Coffey would have made a big enough difference to lift us over MTL in 93.
Edit: realistically probably not, Roy was being Roy. But I can dream

The toughest part for every Kings fan in the 1993 series against Montreal was the goaltending match up. Before every OT the director of the TV broadcast likes to get a shot of each goalie, those few seconds prior to each OT did not inspire confidence.

Gretzky was leaving Edmonton under any and all circumstances. I wonder sometimes where he ends up if McNall doesn't pay Pocklington the $15M.

On top of that, a part of McNall’s deal with Jerry Buss killed various sources of revenue that the Kings should have been pocketing. I believe a big chunk of parking and concession revenues all went to Jerry Buss.

This is a little known fact, and I think it contributed to McNall's predicament. Just grateful the Kings got a rich real estate developer as their owner. Uncle Phil set up the financial foundation on which the King are built.

AEG is so tied up in professional sports arenas now that they must be sweating the pandemic pretty severely.

So, does Cliffy or Toffoli try to come back to LA this offseason? I imagine Toffoli might want to, but for that reason might not be wanted back.

I'd welcome Clifford back with open arms, especially since Lewis left (not that I was advocating re-signing Lewis).

Indeed. Apparently Vancouver and Detroit were the other potential destinations. Doubt there was any way they would have come close to offering the $15 million McNall threw towards Pocklington.

In a short matter of time the Kings lost Coffey, Zhitnik, Sydor and McSorley. enter the black hole.

We'd kill for a young defensive core of Blake, Zhitnik and Sydor now. We had it in 2012 to 2014 with Doughty, Voynov and Martinez, but we needed that trio together for 10 years, not 3. Finding out the secrets behind McNall's money (or lack of it) after the fact, it was pretty clear it was '93 to win it all or it wasn't going to happen while Gretzky was here. They couldn't even make payroll and basically sold players off for nothing. Probably a combination of no real money and bad GM decisions. I remember being baffled why we were trading away our skilled players for what I think Melrose called "courageous" players or some shit. Like what? These guys are going to make up for lack of skill with grit and heart? Good grief.

Jets fan here, how do you guys feel about a trade for #2 for your choice of any of our wingers? Yes laine is included in this.

It wouldn't make any sense for a rebuilding team.
How long of a rebuild do you expect when kopitar and doughty are on the back 9 on their careers? You guys could do a rangers style rebuild I would think. The age of our wingers are a perfect fit.

I don't think those forwards the Jets have are worth the #2 pick. Laine, albeit still a productive player, has not been as good as he was two years ago. I like Ehlers and Kyle Connor, but I also like the idea of taking their chances at a franchise type center at #2 and dipping into free agency to sign a player like Mike Hoffman without burning any assets.

Are you kidding me?

The Kings are a few years off from competing and the offer was lowball in the first place. Just with the ladies, it's not just about your needs.
