Thoughts?

Probably won't cost a ton, good buy low candidate, cash is relatively low (3 years @ $3.25M), expose him if things don't work out.

"Gostisbehere has fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff, seen his offensive production fall off a cliff, and still carries a $4.5MM cap hit for the next three seasons."

We have young lefties coming - Anderson, Clague, Björnfot, Moverare, Hults - why on earth we should trade this guy? I rather resign Ben Hutton (a year or two). He is cheaper, better defensively and coaching staff/teammates know him.

I don't see Laine as a realistic target. Great fit for the current team, but the stuff we'd need to move to get him would open holes right back up. Gonna have to pay a premium on pedigree this early which is a big deal for what's currently a little bit of a gamble--does he even get back to 40 goals? The trade value will likely assume so--so think of what's outgoing and add a piece.

Get ready for the Kings to be rumored to any outgoing Canadian team's players though, since their fan porn involves ripping teams off for their prospects. "with the #2 pick in this year's draft, you've gotta wonder if the Kings will want ____" times infinity.

We don't have the pieces Winnipeg needs anyways. We love Roy and Walker, but neither are centerpieces to a Laine trade and they want NHL-ready, top 4 defensemen. If we're taking a swing at Laine we're giving up either #2 overall this year or our unprotected 1st next year which is spicy considering he's not signed after this season and will be costly.

I think the CV situation and uncertainty of fans in the near future/2021 makes it even less likely we cash in some chips for a name. At least from the ownership stand-point. No need to gather up excitement & buzz for generating ticket sales. Same for ownership pushing for playoffs. Which means Blake & crew can take their time, if desired, to build this team. Assuming that's what Blake wants -- which seems to be the case based on the FO comments.

It's about taking a chance that doesn't carry too much risk, but has upside.

A) Nobody is getting paid internally before the start of 22-23 season.
B) Brown & Carter deals will fall off, Kovalchuk and the worst of the Phaneuf buyout too, so they won't exactly be cash-strapped in-terms of the cap.
C) Like I said before, if it doesn't workout, they expose him rather than Walker or Roy, or they have a really good problem and have to make a deal to protect all 3.

I'd move Roy or Walker in a heartbeat for Laine. Hell I'd probably even move Bjornfot.
Kaliyev, Walker, and a second for Laine? Then the Kings sign Pietrangelo as a UFA.

It'd blow the cap situation in the future, but the Kings could accelerate the rebuild in the space of a week and get right into the playoff conversation.

I'm not saying I'd do it, but it's fun to think about.

There's zero chance this gets you Laine, unless you meant our 2nd overall pick this year. Even if they were looking futures, this wouldn't be enough value.

Even being generous to Kaliyev, you're offering a B+ prospect at least 1 year away, a #4 defenseman (on our team), and a 2nd round pick for a 22 year-old, top 5 goal scorer in the league. The Jets window is now given their offense and goaltending. They need proven NHL defensemen. I could see Kaliyev included if we had someone like Pesce as the centerpiece (or hell, if we still had Muzzin), but it would probably look more like this:

Laine for Kaliyev + Muzzin-type #2-3 defenseman + 2021 1st (lottery protected)

Think the Jeff Carter or Mike Richards trades, but we'd have to give up even more given Laine's age and 50-goal capacity. 1st round pick + NHL-proven top 4 defenseman with potential to become better + a sweetener (I know JJ didn't evolve but back then he looked like he was going to).

I think if Winnipeg does trade him, the Canes and Blue Jackets make the most sense, followed by the Predators and Avalanche. The Blue Jackets especially have both the defensemen to trade and need the offense, but I'd love to see him go to the Carolina just because that offense would be incredible.

I would think the Jets would insist on a young forward with the potential to do what Laine does, which would be Kaliyev, plus an unprotected 1st in 2021, an NHL ready defenseman in Sean Walker, plus another prospect like an Akil Thomas or Jaret Anderson-Dolan. Even then, not sure if that's enough to compel Winnipeg since it's a lot of question marks for a 22-year-old sniper.

As BringTheReign suggested, other contenders like Carolina or Columbus could offer more. If it was strictly a cost cutting move with Winnipeg looking to rebuild, then the Kings package might make more sense. You also have to consider whether or not the Kings are ready to make such a move at this time and if Laine helps accelerate the rebuild. He's still very young and with so many assets in the pipeline, it's a gamble that could pay off.

That's cool. I'm just putting out what I'd offer if I were Blake, but I also don't think it'd work.

Without any attention to WPG's needs, I'd say Unprotected 2022 1st, 2022 2nd, one of our 2nds this year, Kaliyev, Kupari/another top prospect.

Only WPG fan that won't make fun of me for it I can think of is @Holden Caulfield .

But I can't imagine that would get done without a Turcotte/Vilardi/2nd OA which of course should be a nonstarter for the Kings, and we'd be right back at square one, we're not in a position to do that.

Edit: judging by the trade thread I just saw they're looking for a top d-man--which we don't have--and a top-C, which we have in prospect form, but wouldn't be worth it for us.

I believe the Jets want a 2nd line center (Vilardi) and an LD (not an RD). They're in a win now mode so they won't go for prospects.

We won't be good trade partners to get Laine

I really don’t believe in “accelerating” a rebuild by adding a guy like Laine right now. You add a player like Laine once your young core has developed and is ready to take the next step.

There are no shortcuts here. Developing Byfield, Turcotte, etc. the right way and fostering an ownership of the culture and future of the franchise is the way to go. Once you know what you have, then you start dealing players and filling holes. We don’t even know what we have yet.

I don't care how petty this is, i wouldn't want Laine on the team because I would hate to have to see that stupid facial hair he's got 82+ games a year.

He kinda does look like Beavis.
