I agree Grundstrom won't be waived, not so sure about Luff though. I see him as a Taxi Squad candidate.
I agree. Grundstrom would get claimed. Luff is a perfect Taxi squad candidate as he can ‘do a job’ but in truth his development won’t get hampered if he sits on the sidelines and he won’t be in the long term plans at this point.

The problem with the taxi squad is....

1. Why would the kings have prospects sitting when they can be playing in the AHL?

2. Why carry a large taxi squad when Ontario will be playing and practicing at the same arena.

3. There are really no spare pieces that can be rotated in out of the line up. Moore? Amadio? How are Grundstrom and Luff even going to get into the line up? TM has said a few times Amadio is the 4th line center.

When did Amadio become a lock for 4c? I think that position is up for grabs. I think they should send anyone eligible for AHL to the AHL to get playing time. No sense in having important players sitting in a taxi squad. I wouldn’t care about guys like Wagner, Luff and Amadio sitting in the taxi. These players have no upside. They are just warm bodies.

1. Because the A don’t start right away and they can stuff players like Byfield, Kaliyev and the likes there who will get only one or two games before AHL starts.

2. Because the long road trips where you have a chartered flight and El Segundo is far away enough that a call up can’t drive there.

3. Cuz there is a pandemic raging right now and players could get sick. Also Hockey players are rather prone to getting injured with normal use.

The basic idea is for the roster and taxi squad to be a team-bubble of sorts.

Also, there are teams in the NHL who play in Canada but their AHL affiliate is in the USA.

Once the other leagues get going the Taxi squad will all just be players who have been passed on the depth chart. Whose development isn’t that important to you anymore, everybody else will be getting playing time somewhere. So probably AHL vets

Alt
Luff, he’s just a warm body at this point before rushing the kids
Moore see Luff
Amadio- sadly I see Amadio going to way of previous Kings tweeners of Shore, Vey, Weal, Loktionov
Berube- did the actually sign him? Mayor said he was coming back.

I think Luff, Amadio, Moore, Alt, and Grosenick will be perfect for the taxi squad and healthy scratches.

But I do agree on the notion of until the AHL or CHL start, putting the kids on the taxi squad so they can at least practice with the big team. Hopefully Byfield and Kaliyev can play a few months in the AHL before the OHL comes back on.

It seems it would be extremely unlikely Amadio would be waived, probably the same with Moore just to be placed on the taxi squad. If the Kings carry 14 forwards, you have two bodies on the bench every night anyway (if they don't earn a starting spot). Plus Amadio is one of 9 guys practicing with the PP unit (only Wagner, Lizotte and Moore are not from last year's NHL roster players). With revenue being an issue it's also unlikely players with one-way contracts (like Moore and Amadio) will be waived to sit on the taxi squad to be paid a full NHL salary. Luff has a two-way salary and is much less likely to be claimed. Alt and Grosenick would be good for the taxi team too. That leaves one more guy. Don't underestimate the role that salary (one-way vs two-way) and waiver status will play here. They also have to factor in the ONT roster and what kids that are close that need to be playing and get pro experience at the AHL level. I understand why the NHL feels a taxi team is necessary in case of an outbreak of C-19, but it really screws over whoever is placed there, and actually makes roster management even more difficult. I wouldn't be totally shocked if the Kings picked up another tweener AHL/NHL vet who has a two-way deal off the waiver wire to fill a spot so the younger guys on the bubble, like JAD and Andersson, if they don't make the NHL team, can play in ONT everyday.

Wow, pretty rough season preview for the Kings done by the Athletic...and here I was being somewhat optimistic:

Los Angeles Kings 2020-21 season preview
I'm not sure. Sure we sucked last year, but there was a lot of disruption with the tank in full force, the coach teaching a new system and every player having to adjust. But while the record was horrible a lot of people forget that the team played well on most nights atleast in patches. Hell there were whole periods last year when we absolutely dominated playoff teams when the system clicked but we just struggled to score and the results didnt come. But we cleared the dead wood at the deadline, brought in Vilardi and Frk and went unbeaten after the TDL agaisnt good teams.

This year you take Lewis out of that lineup who offered nothing by the end, replace him with a 11 month rested Carter. Take out the whole 4th line and replace them with the Swedes and AA. Doughty gets a solid parter for the first time since Muzzin. Its a significant improvement over the team that went unbeaten at the end of last year. Sure they need to find some consistent scoring outside the top line but if Vilardi continues where he left off with his line firing and the bottom 6 can produce consistent secondary scoring then theres no reason they can't be in the mix for that 4th spot. The motivation is back for every player, theres no waiting for assets to be moved, players arent playing for nothing knowing either way they will be moved before the season ends. Now its produce or theres enough depth that theres 3 guys in line to take your spot.

While he might not be wrong, the author hates the Kings going off of his history.

Haha, yeah. Dom seriously has a thing against the Kings for some reason, he gets even more snarky than usual when discussing the team. Honestly, him being such a prominent writer for the Athletic is one of the reasons I never ended up subscribing.

Just a side note wish the kings would show some practice scrimmages like other teams have been doing. I've seen a few scrimmages on Youtube from various teams. Wings, Devils, Leafs just to name a few. One week away it's been too long.

He's not really prominent at all. There is a ton of material to read from other writers without ever bothering with Dom's garbage. Plus, if you're a Dodgers, Lakers, or Rams fan or fan of any other major sports team, it's totally worth it.

It's Dom. He sucks. It's a pretty good writeup as far as he goes, though. But his model is never going to favor the Kings. It's based on the last three years (almost couldn't be a worse selection), penalizes for age, and doesn't seem to account for youth growth hardly at all. Perfect storm for us--makes Anze and Drew (Dustin, Jeff, etc.) look terrible, doesn't account for our youth hardly at all (not that he has the right players anyway), plus it's an opportunity for him to take shots at players he doesn't like.

He hates Doughty. Hates. Long before he was a 'professional' stats writer, he was just about the biggest polarized "EK is the best player in the world, Doughty isn't even a top 10 dman" guy there was.

Until it actually happens, I just assume players on West Coast teams (in the states) cannot win voted on awards, except the Lady Byng, and who gives a shit about that?

Note:

Yes, I know Burns & Doughty both won Norris trophies in the last 5 years.

While I'll agree that used to be the case, I think he's improved leaps and bounds re: the Kings. The article posted above is fair, and I dare say he was uncharacteristically open to Doughty rebounding. I've read all of his season previews, and he's much snarkier about teams like the Islanders and Pittsburgh than he is about us.

The 2012-2016 Kings were an analytics darling, and I think the precipitous drop since then contributed to the past harshness. Even the '17-18 Kings were buoyed by elite performances from Kopi, DD, and Quick as opposed to our past overall team dominance. Doughty is also a rare bird when it comes to elite defenseman as he puts up less offense than most of his category peers but also plays better defense which is harder to quantify.

EDIT: He also received the lineup analyzed from Lisa Dillman, so critiquing that part is on her.
