No Bjornfot or any other defenseman in sight.

The lack of bluechip D prospects is going to continue to manifest throughout this rebuild, unfortunately.
Bandit's prospect rankings:

1.Tobias Björnfot

Happy? :) Remember these lists are just some donghole's opinion, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

While I am always in favor of taking the best player available in the draft, there is no doubt if the Kings best prospects are forwards, some of them will be traded to get one or more top 4 defensemen.

Typically, a player like Bjornfot does land a spot in the top 4 eventually, and he may be able to anchor a 2nd pairing.

FWIW the top end of next draft looks like the d-men draft of 2008

But I’m also not too broken up that prominent folks don’t even rate our d-prospects, the mainstream guys were never high on Bjornfot Or Anderson at the draft so I take them not mentioning him since as continued ignorance of his abilities rather than a judgment that he’s not that good.

Guarantee they don’t talk about either guy much until after this coming season then go ‘wow where did LA pick these guys up I’VE NEVEr heard of them before’ like Roy and Walker.

I think some of you are sleeping on what Grans could be. If our top pairing was Bjornfot - Grans, that would still be a pretty awesome top pair. Even with just prospects, we have a pretty solid defensive prospect pool:

Bjornfot - Grans
Anderson - Faber
Clague - Durzi
Hults - Spence
Meehan - Strand
Nousiainen

Next year's draft seems heavy on D prospects in the top 15 (that and combined with the lack of a blue chip forward sorta resembles 2012), so there's a good chance the Kings can land one then. I was wondering if say a team like Detroit valued Raymond over Sanderson/Drysdale since they acknowledge there's a good chance they'll be picking in the top 5 again next year.

I agree -- we have some good (extremely) young D prospects that are not noticed as much due to our (many) forwards being so elite. Just Bjornfot, Grans & Faber are three great young D in the pipeline. But we have several others that are ready to make the jump or will be ready soon. The only thing currently lacking is an elite top pairing D prospect. Maybe one (or more) of those young guys turn into one when they hit the NHL. But even if not, we'll get one next year in the draft when we win the lottery from our spot 9-13.

I wouldn't sleep on Moverare who you inadvertently overlooked. I really like the Meehan pick also. Hults and Moverare have both been playing against men for several years now, really looking forward to see their progression in the AHL this season (If we have one).

Common practice for high picks.

The above tweet spurred a big debate on where Byfield could play if the OHL doesn't play, in that event NHL teams could pursue exemptions allowing their players to play in the AHL, or he could just go play in Europe regardless of what the OHL does, Marco Rossi had signed to play in Switzerland, but has since opted not to.

The Kings remain very much in rebuilding mode and did most of their work during the draft. But one executive highlighted the trade for Olli Maatta as one he thought was a nice under-the-radar move.

“If you would have told me before the bubble and the playoffs that they (would trade for Maatta), I would say, ‘What are they thinking?’ But I watched him for Chicago for two rounds and he played way better than I anticipated. He’s at a good (salary) number. I think he still has gas in the tank. I have no problem with the trade.”

There's little to no chance that the Kings defense of the future will not include drafted players, players traded here, and players who willingly sign here.

The Kings are still so early in the process. They can have zero defensemen of any caliber, and I'd still say go BPA, even if it's another C.

I too see the ‘problem’ as not having a Drew Doughty in the system, but who does? Teams go literally decades looking to solve that problem. But—we’re loaded with the ability to go get a similar guy when it’s time. See CBJ getting Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen. OR, maybe that gets solved as soon as next draft with Brandt Clarke or Owen Power. We’re fortunate to not truly have the clock ticking on a DD replacement yet and VERY fortunate to have Kopitar’s heir apparent in the fold. The big questions for the near future (about 3 years out) are who is going to replace Drew Doughty and who will be our top-10 #1 G? Other than that, we have infinity assets and cap space.

Also when it comes to defensemen ranked on prospect lists, the offensive ones are always ranked higher. Ours seem to be more defensive focused, which isn’t bad. The Jack Johnson type dman has prospect will always be ranked higher than the Scuderi, Mitchell, Greene type. Doesn’t mean they will be better l.

Correct with your assessment...
Drafting BPA(if done right) allows you to stock your pipeline and future trade assets..

and we seem steady about forwards being at least decent 2-way players to boot

might shelter for a while til we could snap someone up in a trade if push comes to shove
