US coaching is head scratching. Second year I’ve watched this tourney and the ice time decisions are questionable again.

Russia hasn't looked all that great, but the US has been worse in terms of puck management. So much sloppy passing, and forced passes, fumbled pucks, etc. The previous game between Finland and Germany wasn't exactly a smooth one either.

And Zegras snipes one in to make things interesting.

kaliyev gotta bury that one early on the PP, not gonna get a better chance and he hit glass

thankfully zegras picked it up

Brock Faber has been stellar. Great on his feet, always in position, quick, decisive - making the right play. Has been good with pressure on him. Looked good on the little PP time he had. Good passing. Done well, skating through neutral zone too. He's probably one of the youngest on the team, except for Beniers.

I bet he will wear a letter for Team USA next year.

The 2012 Cup, the Kings had Mitchell, Scuderi and Greene...the 2014 Cup they had Regher.
They all could play defense. They were instrumental for those cups! They could shut down
the Devils and Rangers forwards. The Kings no longer have those caliber of defensive, defensemen.

I think Bjornfot and Faber will have that level of ability on defense. Maybe not as big and tough
as a Regher - but have defensive acumen, excelling at defense like Scuderi, but they both
skate better than Scuderi. They are only 18 and 19 now and both beyond their years at what
they do. Just wait until they are 23 and 22 years old. They will both be bigger and both
be a level or 2 better at honing some offensive game. Plus, they are both known for their character.

Maybe the 2021 draft the Kings get that elusive, franchise defenseman, in Owen Power.
Helge Grans is a bit of a wildcard (with big potential) but has top 4 skill and size.

When people talk about King prospects, it's 'Byfield, Turcotte, Kaliyev, Fagemo...Akil Thomas,
Rasmus Kupari, Tyler Madden, Anderson-Dolan...

The D are flying under the radar - Bjornfot, Anderson, Grans, Faber, Spence, Nousiainen, Hults.
If the Kings can draft one of: Owen Power, Brandt Clarke, Carson Lambos, Simon Edvinsson or Luke Hughes; all potential top 2 D. ..man.

It is what it is. One game at a time. Faber was real good in my opinion. Best Dman the whole night. Spencer Knight sheesh hoping he bounces back but Wolf needs to start tomorrow. Onto the next game. Russians lost to us last year and made it to the championship game. Haven't gone to the main boards, shall I venture into the all out bash kings prospects thread. Lol.

This game was always going this way. The Russians have all played regular competitive hockey which is a huge advantage. You can practice and play as many exhibition games as you want but it’s not even close to being the same thing. Faber is one of the few guys that has been playing real games and it sounds like it shows, it’s not a coincidence.

The Russians are the favourites simply because they’ve been playing frequently. If either the USA or Canada are even close to what would be their best by the end of the tournament then they will have done well. I say this as a complete neutral, that really doesn’t care who wins.

Can’t wait for another great day of Jr’s. I have missed hockey so much to get another 3 televised games in one day is such a treat. Going to hold of judging our guys until they have gotten 3 games under their belts as a lot have not played a competitive game in a long time.

Early on I am impressed with Faber. The guy is a sponge and his 1 on 1 play is so good. Turcotte gives me the odd glimpse of Mike Richards at times but Craig Johnson at others. Arty Party may end up being like that Lamborghini sitting in the rich neighbors garage. Only taken out on special occasions when the roads are dry and no rain in sight. The boy has a lot of work to do away from the puck but man he sure knows what to do with it in the offensive zone. Faber already looks like he is in mid season for but I will give the two up front another game to get there hockey legs, lungs and hands before I start to worry.

I am hoping Byfield gets stronger as the tourney progresses. He is a project that may need a few more years but sometimes he shows us a little glimpse and that is exciting.

Our future Defence is looking good with Anderson, Bjornfot, and Faber licking down there own end. Really hoping Spence keeps projecting upwards like he has and Grans puts it all together as both have great offensive instincts.

Man we should have drafted Zegras. I was high on him before and like his game more now. Ducks got lucky.

Zegras was complete garbage last night. Took him until a 6-on-4 power play to do anything of note, and it wasn’t some sort of amazing play. He also had at least one brutal blind pass turnover at the offensive blue line that led to a rush the other way. He’s an incredibly talented player, but I’m not sure I see someone who will do the little things to win the playoffs.

He was definitely trying to be too cute yesterday with lots of forced passes. To me, the worst performer thus far has been Bobby Brink. He looks completely ineffective.

Agreed. To be fair to the rest of the team, most did not look great. The only ones who stood out positively to me were Boldy, Faber, Beniers, and Wolf. Other than that I was pretty disappointed.

I've not been a fan of Zegras for years. Even before he was drafted, I texted Hoven he reminds ne of Robbie Schremp - all flash and no substance.

He definitely has flashes of brilliance. So the Schremp comparison may have been too harsh. But I am still doubtful he'll have the long-term impact others are expecting him to have.

The World Jrs are always nice and are 1 of many benchmarks in a normal year to judge players. But like in a playoff match players can get hot (Bill Stanford in 89) and players can cool off for a week or so.so on a normal year we may not see what a player has to offer. I truly believe it is a showcase tournaments and the players should be getting up to play in it but if they have one bad tournament over a couple of years. That doesn’t represent their norm, I’m not gonna get to bent out of shape

this year‘s tournament is even worse as some of the players have been playing with very little break between the seasons. Some players have not played competitively for almost a year like Byfield. Team USA, team Germany, and team Sweden definitely did not send their best teams. And there are numerous players who are just getting back from a two-week isolation or have actually had Covid. This tournament at best is a nice to see but I’m gonna put even less stock into it than I would normally tournament.

Saying that I do not think that Turcotte had a good tournament last year. Due to injury and health he had an up-and-down season. If he does not have a good tournament here I start to see a pattern and begin to worry.

Compare the two by field who played a very young world juniors last year and did not impress, then went back and went super nova to finish an already good season. If his play is not as good this world juniors, still as one of the youngest, would not Concern me as much.

I look at Faber and absolutely love what he’s been doing but you also have to realize that he is almost a pure defense of guy, not relying on his shooting, and has been playing this season already. I would expect him to look better than most the offense of guys that haven’t played much hockey like Kaliyev.

Just food for thought, I would love to get Fagemo and Thomas in a room and ask what they would prefer. Either leading the tournament in scoring and having a major role for the team, or having a more defensive roll and scoring the gold medal game winning goal.

I think it would be an interesting choice.

Ribeiro is my comparison. Zegras will definitely put up points in the NHL, but there may be a cost to having somebody like that as a focal point of your offense.

I like Turcotte's game a lot, he easily could have had 4 or 5 assists and a goal in the last two games, but it hasn't happened. Lots of rust in that team, maybe not individually but as working with teammates things just aren't clicking. I love Turcotte's assertiveness in transition and his willingness to go to the hard areas. His faceoffs have been laughable though, he gets beat and beat clean.

Kaliyev, man, I still don't see it. I have been of the opinion that he is just going to be a specialist in the NHL whose numbers will sway up and down depending on who is doing the hard and creative work around him. He is going to need to be on a deep team that can afford his inability to be a factor amywhere other than from the circles in. I see a less mobile Patrick Sharp, who could be a valuable specialist in a loaded squad, and luckily he is an organization that is building towards that kind of depth.

Faber looks damn good. Reads and reacts well, terrific closing speed and a good stick. He has made some impressive zone exits as well.

It's hard not to like Zegras' game last year at the World Juniors. I think he just needs to be more assertive with driving the net and shoot more when the oppurtunity presents itself.
