Canes have always been my top team to follow and I guess even more so now. I haven't missed a game since the trade.
As a fellow Finn I must salute you. Waking up at 2am, 3am or 4 or 5am to catch Canes game.. I used to be able to do it. Now, I think I am old. I have to catch the highlights from Sportsnet youtube channel to keep up with what's going on. I just love the trade. Hopefully they will find the chemistry between Rants and Sea bass.

I loved the trade when it was done and I love it even more now. Our PP is/looks much better. Our top line is even more fun to watch. Necas has been actually better defensively than I thought he could be.

FYI Necas has also hit 4 posts/crossbars since joining the Avs and could have got an easy EN goals yesterday if he would have been more selfish. Instead Kiviranta gave up the puck. He has been reallllllllly good.
As a Canes fan, I think we've done a bad job of communicating our opinions on Necas's defense to the larger world. He's pretty good in his own zone, gives good effort most of the time, etc. Our problems with him (which are minor, relatively speaking, he's a great player!) is that he has a tendency to commit bad turnovers with no one behind him to cover, and that he falls asleep occasionally. That's noticeable in the uber-responsible RBA Canes, not so much in the rest of the league.

I think he's gonna be great for the Avs, he's one of the few players in the league who can actually keep up with MacKinnon.

He reminds me of my fav d Bouchard. Has the puck a lot.. creates a tonne of offence... But when he makes a mistake defensively.. it's a hillarious eye rolling type of mistake lol

People don't really understand what playing 18min vs 25min means huh? Rantanen is the better player, and he will be the better player. That's not saying Necas doesn't fit Avs lineup nicely.

Limp Rod Brind´Amor will make defensive player out of Rantanen, whether he likes it or not. I feel sad for every offensive player in Carolina.
I feel like most players would rather win then score. They have a .661 winning percentage since he took over. I'm sure there's a few players who care more about individual stats but most of the good ones want to win.

If Necas continues to produce more than Rantanen you can hang onto those 25 minutes bud, haha, he isn't driving the match much either these days.

Well Rantanen cares more about getting paid than scoring or winning so you get your checkbook out before the summer

Doesn't really matter tbh, one of them has multiple 100+ point seasons, one has some points in his new
team.

Let me put it this way: If Rantanen doesn't score a single point in the next 10 games, and Necas scores 10 points in the next 10 games. Rantanen still has more value.

ok. bud.

Of course the reactionaries went from “Necas isn’t fit to lace Rantanen’s skates” to “Rantanen is a bum who was riding MacKinnon’s coattails”

Said this on the Canes board, but Rantanen’s big frame and ability to score and make plays off the cycle after pinning teams in their own zone will help us big time come playoffs. Necas is a great player and will thrive next to MacK, I don’t really care if Rantanen’s scoring clip slows down a bit now that he’s a Cane. Fans are so obsessed with declaring winners of trades and parading stats and narratives, I just can’t be bothered. Looking forward to watching Rantanen continue to acclimate with teammates and build chemistry with Aho as we gear up for postseason.

I was super sad about Rants when that trade was first made. I watched his first nhl game live and over the years he became one of my favourites. That being said, I also knew next to nothing about Necas (which caught me off guard because I watch a TON of hockey, and not just the Avs).

I love the way Necas plays hockey. He fits like a glove with the Avs. Who’s going to be the better player from here on out? If I had to wager it will probably be rants, however it would not surprise me one bit if Necas ended up going toe to toe with him.

I’m happy both teams seem to be happy with the trade.

To date, Rantanen has been the better player... that's not open to debate. However, what I find interesting is the way they have performed with their new teams. Of course, it's early but Necas has fit right in with the Avs and is playing as expected or better. Rantanen has been a bit underwhelming though, if we're being honest. I'm curious to see how this plays out if Rants is still slightly underperforming and not extended leading up to the trade deadline -- does that change the way the Canes view him long-term (and his pending mammoth contract) and vice versa?

It´s your system, get rid of your head coach and you will be much better.

Hurricanes have been the 2nd best team in the league over a 6-season span since Brind’Amour took over, and without any MVP-level talent. There is almost zero room to improve over what he has done.

It’s just weird how every player that comes to Carolina just suddenly stops scoring.

Except that defensemen consistently hit career highs.

Canes’ system shifts scoring from F to D, it’s not a lot more complicated than that.

Necas has looked great so far, I’d even say snakebitten a bit, but the biggest concern I still have is how much he’ll be able to produce in the playoffs. We all made fun of Rantanen for looking absolutely terrible all game but somehow always came up with 2,3 points. He was doing this in the playoffs as well.

I could see Necas breaking 100 points this season, but I could also totally see Rantanen scoring 30 points in the playoffs and winning the CS.

As mentioned already, we won’t be able to evaluate the trade until the playoffs.

So i’m assuming you’ haven’t been watching Rantanen’s Canes games? He’s looked the furthest thing from underwhelming, has found immediate chemistry with Blake in particular. Important to note that Rantanen joined a team that was and is being ravaged by the flu, and that he’s had to play on chopped and screwed lines due to personnel dropping like flies. It’s always important to not judge by stat sheet watching alone, his game impact has been huge. This is a more important factor for Carolina that most other teams in the league as well. I promise you the organization won’t care if he drops closer to 90 points than 105/110.

Brind'Amour is literally the fastest coach to 300 wins and has the most wins in his first 500 games as a head coach. Canes have made the playoffs every year since he's been coach and have won a round every year.

This is also with a team that in that time frame hasn't had elite offensive talent and elite goaltending. Defense has always been very strong even if it maybe lacked true game breaking talent like a Fox, Josi, Karlsson, Makar, Hughes, etc... but those guys are also like exceptionally rare.

Canes haven't won the cup in that time and that's a fair point but also not every team has McDrai, MacKinnon, Kucherov, type players that you can just unleash some sort of full court offensive press mindset.

You will not find more of a puck hound in the league than Necas. I've said it many times before but his whole purpose in life is to get that puck, skate with it and make offense happen
