I put more stock in McKenzie's list more than in any other because it has NHL scouts input.

McKenzie had Jarventie 52th OA but had Kleven at 36th OA. He had Sokolov 83th

Sens initially had :

- 33th OA : Jar Jar Binks
- 52th OA : Traded with Gruden (former 4th round pick) to get double Stanley Cup champ Matt Murray
- 59th OA : Traded with a 3rd to Toronto to move up and grab Lucky Number Kleven
- 61st OA : Egor Malkin Sokolov

Jarventie, Murray, Kleven, Sokolov

Maybe some people don't see it now, but that could be a heck of a 2nd round

No. I have Chris Tierney. We also signed Alex Galchenyuk

- DJ Smith.

Not saying I have issues with everything that was done but that Could have been quite the haul in lots of different ways

Yes, of course... and the same could actually be said for most picks made. There's always several viable options, except maybe when you get Karlsson at #15th OA, but even then there was John Carlson (drafted 27th OA) and Roman Josi (drafted 38th OA) left on board.

And why is #64 and #71 included? I was talking solely about the 2nd round. Although #64 was the 3rd used to move up and grab Kleven

To emphasize 6 picks in 38 picks from 33 on in a deep draft particularly through the 2nd and top of the 3rd round; You mentioned a great 2nd ,, all I am saying is with those 6 picks it could have been a great haul in several ways.

Nothing to worry about yet at least.

I guess I'm one of the few who like what Ottawa did in the 2020 draft in that 2nd rd. It's all hindsight to think they should have done this or that, but we weren't there to know if they knew something that we didn't that made them trade up or why they picked a guy where they did. Could they have gotten more? Well, who knows what could have happened, the draft is a crapshoot? They clearly wanted the players they got & most likely didn't want to wait in case someone else picked them before they did. Time will tell if it was the right moves or not, but so far I'm fine with it.

Using Bob McKenzie’s list as a comparison, here is Bob’s ranking versus the Senator’s pick number:

PLAYER. BOB’S LIST. SENATORS PICK
Stuetzle. 2. 3
Sanderson. 8. 5
Grieg. 24. 28
Jarventie. 52. 33
Kleven. 36. 44
Sokolov. 83. 61

So, Kleven is not a reach, and might be viewed as a lucky pick at #44. Jarventie and Sokolov appear to be reaches.

As second round picks have low probability of becoming NHL players, I am not unhappy with picks 33, 44 and 61 and am looking forward to see how they develop.

The one regret for me is the fish who got away: Drysdale.

I liked most of the draft we had. I've made it really clear that I'm not a fan of Kleven but if we had picked Drysdale I would have been a little less against the Kleven pick.

The only thing I'm not a fan of from this draft was trading 59OA and 64OA for Kleven(44OA). Not because of value, but because we gave the Laffs two picks in a deep draft, while Kleven seems like a pretty tame pick, meanwhile Toronto got some pretty big boom/bust prospects. TBD!

They got one extra pick out of it. They would have had 44 if they didn’t do the trade

Not many games for the prospects this week, there are games being played by European national teams.

Right! Poorly worded on my part. My reservation is in them getting 2 shots at a gem, and us 1 shot at a most likely middle pairing guy. I don't think anyone sees a high ceiling in Kleven, although you never know if you end up with a Volchenkov out of him.

If you believe in McKenzie's pre-draft work, Kleven was 36th on their list.

It's weird, I have read many comments being "down" on Kleven thinking he's just a potential 3rd pairing physical D-man at best but from my personal "scouting" I actually find it's an intriguing pick with unknown upside.

I suggest you read this thread, and always taking random opinions with a grain of salt but there is very interesting stuff in there, particularly RAFI BOMB who brings a lot of info as usual

Prospect Info: - Tyler Kleven at 44th Overall (Sens traded up)

Listen to Nick Fohr interview. post #15

My guess is Kleven was not far after Jarventie on the Sens list, they didn't want to see him go to another team so they moved up. A very late 2nd and an early 3rd, yes Toronto had 2 picks but Sens moved up 15 picks. It probably allowed them to get a guy that was much higher on their list than the other options they would have had. They might have picked Sokolov if they just kept that 59th OA pick (Kleven would have been gone almost certainly)

I don’t think anyone is arguing kleven wasn’t high on the sens list. We are just arguing that they’re wrong.

Well, by many comments I have read it's clear that the way the reality works is still a bit confusing for some. Example, when you read "we really reached for that pick" it is based on what?

Anyway, if the Sens are wrong, they won't be alone at all. There seems to be several "people in the know" high on this kid.

I'll take pro scouts opinions over fans' for now. Well I always do that until I have enough info and personal viewings to base it differently, which probably won't happen before the AHL.
