Looking back at the 2019 Draft where the Sens took Lassi Thomson at 19 OA and Montreal took Cole Caufield at 15 OA...

Hypothetically.. If the diminutive Caufield slipped to 19 .. only 4 more spots would he Sens have drafted him?
I don't know, but it's annoying that we passed on so many quality picks that were taken after Thomson.

At least the Pinto pick looks good...

Who do you like after Thomson? I like LT but I think PD got a little nervous with the run of RD in the 1RD.

Personally I expected one of Tomasino, McMichael, or Hienola. Those are the guys I'm disappointed we passed on. There were also a bunch of bust or boom types like Brink, Kalyiev and Suzuki who I didn't really think we'd be interested in that high but where intriguing options if we were going to try and trade back. I didn't have Thomson on my radar as a first rounder.

I’m not a huge fan of Tom and McM … Some of those you mentioned guys will have better careers than LT but I don’t see the pick as a miss.

Would rather pretty much every pick in the 1st after him outside of Beecher, Tracey and Holmstrom, not to mention all the guys in the 2nd and later I’d take over him.

McMichael was the guy I wanted instead of Lassi.

But I was also wrong about the Pinto pick because I didn't like it at the time.

Fair enough - I see AHL star in CMM and I’m moderately happy with Lassi … but I wouldn’t pretend to try to split those differences. I didn’t know who Pinto was … or Levi …

Tomasino for sure. Was so happy he was still available. We have a lot of forwards so maybe it works out for the best.

I also wanted JJ Peterka instead of Greig and Jarventie last year.

Draft is a crapshoot and I'm not a real scout but it's still fun to wonder

Me too - I wonder why the Sens passed on JJ…it would be fun to know.

So... We turned a 1st rd pick (became 4th OA), Turris, Bowers, Hammond and a 3rd into 118 games of Duchene as our #1 center on a basement team and Thomson....

Saw this on twitter yesterday about that trade:

at the time Turris had enough value to get Samuel Girard + a 2018 2nd rounder.
Yes, but without taking on another top line centre we would have just re-signed Turris for 5 or 6 years. Can't see how we could have realistically capitalized on Turris' perceived value at the time.

Not sure why this is a recent post as it has looked exactly like that for a while... I had similar posts 1-2 years ago

- Turris was not worth re-signing long-term, we did the right thing not comitting to him
- Shane Bowers wasn't a great prospect and it doesn't look like it changed
- Hammond was a small cap dump
- a 3rd rounder was just a 3rd round pick. Sometimes teams make a great pick but the value given up is still the pick (ex : Mark Stone with the 6th obtained from Dallas in the Alex Auld trade. Dallas didn't trade Mark Stone for him but a 6th)

It was always going to be Duchene as a 118 GP rental vs the missed opportunity to draft 4th OA during what became a rebuild. Making a great pick with the 19th OA (that was later obtained for Duchene) would have somewhat offset that, jury is still out but not super confident Thomson will be a great NHLer.

Plus, looking at what Colorado was able to get for Turris, it would have been better to trade him for futures. If we only knew!

plz forgive me for not stalking your page to see if you might have had a similar take within the last 3 years. I'll do better next time.

Why would you take this as a slight against you and answer like that? I'm just saying I'm surprised of the post like if things changed recently... Unless you are Tyler Ray? Sorry, it wasn't an attack at all lol

It was certainly a good decision in hindsight to move on from Turris, not sure you can use the prospect someone else chose as evidence the pick wasn't worth worrying about, though it was a 3rd so not exactly a top end piece. Had the player chosen with that third ended up looking like the next Shea Weber, I wouldn't argue we gave away a hall of fame Dman with that third.

The argument that the alternative is we would have re-signed Turris ignores the reality that we kicked off a full rebuild in Feb 3 months later. Turris certainly could have been traded for futures at the deadline with Phaneuf and Brassard rather than re-signed

Anyways, this is going down a road better suited for other threads.

I thought Davidson might have done better given how close he was to cracking CLB before we acquired him, I'm more surprised how much he struggled in the AHL though. best of luck to him going forward.

Its def a rabbit hole we dont need to go down. Just thought the timing was interesting seeing it yesterday then the posts today.
