Watched the 3rd period, definitely not Miller's best showing. Fumbled the puck and made some poor decisions in his own zone. It's summer hockey so i'm not going to put much thought into it though.

Didn't even realize Wahlstrom was playing till he took the dumb penalty with 5 minutes left, boy has he regressed.

Guys I don't mean to interject but Wahlstrom didn't have a bad game. took some bad penalties running into the goalies space but he had several good chances, scored a goal and was pretty engaged all game.

He made a bad pass from the point on the PP which led to a 3-on-1 with him being the defender, and he for some reason decided to close hard on the puck carrier right at the blue line which led to an easy goal. He also had a good rush later on.

Starting the second he leveled a kid who thought he could take it outside and around him, then later made a great block on the PP. Unfortunately it stung him bad and he became a pylon and Canada scored. Not on him though, he couldn't skate.

So, IMO mixed bag. A couple glaring mistakes mixed in with some good things. You can tell Team USA relies on him, he's on the 1st PP unit, PK unit, and seems to be the top pair.

On the goal against, the “only” questionable play was a badly executed fake shot/pass. Otherwise it is on #15 who foolishly went forward and allowed 3 on 1. Miller could not do anything but look for a opportunity to create pressure and possibly induce a mistake that didn’t happen. Otherwise I think it was a better period (on his offside btw) than what he did against Finland.

Wahlstrom was definitely active all game. Along with Caufield and Zegras, he was probably one of the most active for USA. The goal was a nice shot. The two goalie interference penalties were bad, though I didn't see the last penalty. All that said, given his experience at various international tournaments, his year in the NCAA, his cup of coffee in the AHL, you would absolutely expect him to be a go-to guy for USA. Taken in that context I would say he had an okay series, not bad but not great but any means.

IDK, with his size and reach I would think he would be better off by playing off on the puck carrier there, particularly as it was coming down the wall. Playing beer league, yeah you can close that gap and try to force a mistake, but these kids are pretty damn good. If he doesn't force the puck carrier into a mistake it's an easy 2-on-0. I understand why he made the play he did, but I didn't think it was the right one and would be surprised if the coaches did either.

You're right, though, after his initial mistake, Farabee did him no favors. The slap-pass could have actually worked, I think, he just seemed to hit it at half speed which let Foudy jump in there. And then I think he was just frustrated and wanted to atone for that mistake by making some tremendous play cutting off the rush, and it was a bad gamble.

Anyway. I see so many encouraging things from this guy. He just needs experience, at this point. All the tools are there for him to be a force.

Strong game by Wahlstrom, no doubt

To be fair, i only saw the 3rd like i stated a couple posts before, he might have played well in the first 2 but he was a ghost in the 3rd.

Takeaways:
  • K’Andre Miller: terrible 1st / good 2nd (must have been getting railed with that shot).
  • If JG was able to get Edmonton’s 1st and draft Trevor Zegras, this rebuild is done yesterday.
  • Craig Button says some weird ****.
I try really hard not to think about the second point, and as to the third...."Tampa has a Foote fetish" was great

Now I know why so many people love Zegras’ creativity.
Also Robertson (leafs) had a strong game. Very heady comepetitive player. Any reason why our Robertson isn’t playing ?

Our Robertson is Canadian and probably couldn't crack their defense, and just quickly looking at their roster, they went heavier with 2018 draftee's and the 2019 draftee's they invited were Byram and Harley (and there were 2 2020 eligible's that probably won't make the final team). I think our Robertson will probably get the invite next year

I knew he was canadien that’s why was surprised didn’t see him. Damn Canada’s defense is that good that they couldn’t use him? But I see what u mean with them going 2018 heavy

Some bad passes, made that same play on the SHG twice, high-sticking penalty, just sort of aloof. Looked much more in the game during the 2nd. Did not watch the 3rd.

The defensemen they brought this year were:
2018 draftees
Calen Addison #53OA
Kevin Bahl #55OA
Jacob Bernard-Docker #26OA
Declan Chisholm #150OA
Peter Diliberatore #180OA
Jonny Tychnonick #48OA
Jett Woo #37OA
2019 draftees
Bowen Byram #4OA
Thomas Harley #18OA
2020 eligible
Justin Barron
Braden Schneider

I probably would've at least invited him over a few of those guys, but I can understand why they didn't

Wahlstrom is of course a strong player at this level. But do I see his game translating well to the NHL? I am certainly not a fan. And even if he does end up getting some goals, he will certainly get paid for it and then some. I am struggling some with valuing that factor, but like a high drafted US kid that puts up 20-25 goals — it won’t take long before the millions per season piles up. And I am certainly not sold on that he will make it in the NHL, a lot will come down to if NYI can provide a strong enough environment for him...

People look for different things in the hockey world. Harley is held — very — high in Canada. The things I look for differs quite much from what those people look for, and it’s probably vice versa with regards to some Swedes I like but they don’t really appreciate.

Anyway, Harley over Robertson is not something I think is clear at all.

Almost good that Miller isn’t perfect, don’t want to see him rushed to turn pro. :)

The decision for this coming season was already made, no matter how Miller played in this tournament. And a summer tournament played in 2019 is going to have nothing to do with what happens in 2020 ether.

Yeah probably, and we don't have room for him in the NHL either. I wasn't really indicating that I thought that it was a realistic possibility that he would be rushed.

And I think he should turn pro next season. However, if he had played in the CHL he would have been in camp. And to be honest, if K'Andre Miller was at the camp in one month I don't think we would have three LDs that would outplay him by a wide margin. He is that good today already, but its different with the college kids since they don't go to the camp.

isnt the plan 2 more years of college then once they are done come over like Fox did?

Miller looks good but he obviously needs more time which is to be expected.

with all the LD vying for a spot 2 yrs is not a big deal and at that point good chance he steps right into the lineup with no AHL time IMO.

After expansion which is also good timing with a kid like Lindgren or Hajek likely getting picked

I don't know if there's a "plan" for him, per se. If he has an excellent season in college and tells the team he's ready to go, I'm sure they'd sign him.

As much as I think Miller is a very intriguing prospect, I think he still has a lot to gain by playing at lower levels like college and world juniors. His overall defending technique and positioning, his decision making and the offense in his game still have a lot of room to improve. I'd much rather him come to the NHL more polished. The risk in him turning pro too soon is introducing a level of panic in his decision making and stunting aspects of his game. There were lots of moments at the WJSS where he flashed tons of promise. But if I'm the Rangers I'm taking it slow with Miller. We have lots of other interesting LD prospects who are closer to the NHL (Hajek, Rykov, Reunanen, Lindgren) who can hold down the fort for now. Let him grow his game and round out his decision making.

I think he should turn pro next summer, but spend the full season in the AHL
