I’m loving what Gauthier is doing right now, but is he a guy who can play top-9 minutes where his main contribution is forechecking and defense? Is Necas?
I think if you sat the coaching staff down and ask who they’d rather have with the big club all year, a 20 point Necas or a 20 point Gauthier, they’re going to go with a Gauthier. Even if only because of the raw physical tools they’ve been given to work with, I think Gauthier is more NHL ready than Necas.

But what if it's 40 point Necas vs 20 point Gauthier? I'm not trying to shit on the guy, I've been really impressed with what I've seen, but it's hard to know too much from a couple early pre season games. The talk of earning a spot like Foegele last year seems really accurate, but after his fast start Foegele spent about 60 games contributing pretty much zero until the playoffs

Fortunately, you don't have to make a permanent choice. Start with Gauthier because he's playing better now. If he dips and Necas picks it up in Charlotte, switch 'em up. It's good to have cost controlled two way depth.

Interesting to me that there are not 14 forwards in the group. Does this mean that the 13th forward is in group 1? Would not think they would put either 44 or 88 in the press box...

The tricky thing is which one of Gauthier and Necas is more valuable when the scoring touch goes cold. I’m loving what Gauthier is doing right now, but is he a guy who can play top-9 minutes where his main contribution is forechecking and defense? Is Necas? It’s a weird situation, because we know neither of this guys is likely to score a ton of points as a rookie.

I feel that it's important to note in this context that for all the dazzling work Gauthier has done, he has exactly one assist in three games. The scoring touch *has* gone cold and he's still been our best player in camp.

Brindy likes to see effort and hard work. He knows the points will come in due time.

i would be surprised if we made all of our cuts and only had 13 forwards with us in the last 3 games. I think we would have an entire extra line. The guys that are still fighting for 12th spot / our first call ups in case of an injury.

1) Leaving other spots (14, 15) open gives the 2nd group something to fight for.
2) If they go with 13 (or 14) forwards with both 44 and 88, I think we see Rod rotate the last forward like last season. He could give Foegele, Necas, Gauthier, and maybe even McGinn some nights off until someone is injured.

While Necas may not have 'earned it' in his 2 preseason games. I think he's earned a shot with his play in the AHL last year. Training camp is important, but it's also a small sample size and doesn't take a lot of things that should matter into account.
yeah. necas had 52 points in 64 games and was a +20 last year compared to 41 in 75 and a -6 for gauthier. we're reading way too much into 2 or 3 preseason games. i have been impressed by gauthier, though, and i think he deserves to make the team.

i think the main group today is the team to start off (though likely one of forsling/claesson gets sent down for cap room). there's nothing wrong with keeping one of gauthier/necas in the press box for a short period of time until we figure things out.

Brings up an interesting point. This organization is VERY analytics-driven.

Of course, we don't have access to the more sophisticated stats that the team keeps internally, things like controlled zone entries. There's no telling what kind of statistical profile they have on these guys. But using our very blunt-edged tool, the official stat sheet, here's what it looks like in the race for the last roster spot:

* These are the non-regular roster players who have skated at least 2 games so far

Clearly the most important number here is the "time" column, because it shows you they've given Gauthier 3 games to prove himself. He's the only player on the roster -- including the regulars -- with that distinction. They are clearly giving him the extended tryout for a position.

But, for what it's worth, he actually doesn't stand out from the crowd on a per-minute basis. He's profiling very similarly to Luostarainen and a bit shy of Lorentz... the difference is that Gauthier has played a lot more minutes, which translates to more incidents which establish him in our memories.

This isn't me trying to say Gauthier won't or can't make the roster. But I'd be cautious on drawing conclusions from what we've seen so far. If the Canes' stat sheet is aligned with this one, then it's going to tell them that his extended tryout isn't actually producing a higher rate of results than you'd expect to get from comparable borderline prospects, if they were given a similar opportunity. This organization is so focused on measurable results over "wow" moments, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this ended up being a lot of buildup to an anticlimactic result.

If it is, they need to question the capability of their stats people, because you can't make statistical judgements based on sample sizes of 1, which is the number of points each player has.

The stats like P/60 are meaningless with such small sample sizes.
