Well that’s unfair as that’s a moving goal post. Average height had dropped consistently for 10 years; the current average is what used to be undersized... and that’s without normalizing the fact that the mean population from hockey countries is growing taller.
I mean you need all kinds of size to win. But you also need to diversify your prospect pool, because if you are fixated on one position it doesn't tend to create results, because contrary to belief you can't just trade surplus assets for holes. That isn't how it works in the real world.
Everyone says draft BPA but I disagree. Because I've seen teams do that and then trade from a position of weakness, unless they just stack a position and like 70% or more of their guys come out as NHLers. I mean shit look at Anaheim, in a normal market Vatanen comes out as a coveted piece instead he gets Blandisi (meh), a 3rd (meh) and 28 year old recovery project Henrique. The world doesn't work when you only draft BPA. Because when you end up with a surplus you always deal from a position of weakness. This is a business sport not a we will give you a great return on every asset sport.
