We don't have as much cap space as some people seem to think.
This assumes Vesey is traded with no money coming back, but it's without Buch, Lemieux, ADA and Trouba. Those 4 will cost at least 14 mil. It also doesn't include Kakko's performance bonuses, which should be the max of 2.85 mil, bringing the total bonuses up to roughly 5.9 mil. Not all of those bonuses will be earned, but we will need to leave some room for some of them, so we really don't have much cap space at all unless we trade someone or buy someone out.
The good news is, I think it actually makes sense to buy out one of Shatty/Smith (assuming we can't trade one of them). Of the two, I think it makes more sense to buy out Shatty. Smith is more versatile. If necessary, we can buyout Smith next summer.
We currently have the following dead cap space from Girardi, Spooner and Beleskey:
2019-20: 5.336 mil
2020-21: 1.11 mil
2021-22: 1.11 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil
If we keep Shattenkirk, we have:
2019-20: 5.336 mil + 6.65 mil
2019-21: 1.11 mil + 6.65 mil
2021-22: 1.11 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil
If we buy him out this year, we have:
2019-20: 6.819 mil
2020-21: 7.193 mil
2021-22: 2.544 mil
2022-23: 2.544 mil
If we buy him out next year, we have:
2019-20: 5.336 mil + 6.65 mil
2020-21: 6.426 mil
2021-22: 1.777 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil
Of course I expect there to be other moves. Kreider will likely get traded. Maybe Names as well. But until those moves happen, we really don't have the cap space to be adding anything significant.
That is significant dead cap
