We don't have as much cap space as some people seem to think.

This assumes Vesey is traded with no money coming back, but it's without Buch, Lemieux, ADA and Trouba. Those 4 will cost at least 14 mil. It also doesn't include Kakko's performance bonuses, which should be the max of 2.85 mil, bringing the total bonuses up to roughly 5.9 mil. Not all of those bonuses will be earned, but we will need to leave some room for some of them, so we really don't have much cap space at all unless we trade someone or buy someone out.

The good news is, I think it actually makes sense to buy out one of Shatty/Smith (assuming we can't trade one of them). Of the two, I think it makes more sense to buy out Shatty. Smith is more versatile. If necessary, we can buyout Smith next summer.

We currently have the following dead cap space from Girardi, Spooner and Beleskey:

2019-20: 5.336 mil
2020-21: 1.11 mil
2021-22: 1.11 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil

If we keep Shattenkirk, we have:

2019-20: 5.336 mil + 6.65 mil
2019-21: 1.11 mil + 6.65 mil
2021-22: 1.11 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil

If we buy him out this year, we have:

2019-20: 6.819 mil
2020-21: 7.193 mil
2021-22: 2.544 mil
2022-23: 2.544 mil

If we buy him out next year, we have:

2019-20: 5.336 mil + 6.65 mil
2020-21: 6.426 mil
2021-22: 1.777 mil
2022-23: 1.11 mil

Of course I expect there to be other moves. Kreider will likely get traded. Maybe Names as well. But until those moves happen, we really don't have the cap space to be adding anything significant.

That is significant dead cap

Shattenkirk @ $3.25m for Hanzal + Nichuskin
-this deal is done with the understanding that Dallas will use this cap space to sign Zuccarello

This likely gives Dallas less cap space considering Hanzal is probably LTIR and Nichushkin is 24 years old so he can be bought out for 1/3 of his contract costing merely 700k this year and 400k next.

So essentially, we drafted scary monsters, skilled midgets, and Ciccolini. :)

Edit: in all seriousness, one of the things I like about Henriksson, Jones, and Aaltonen is that alrough they’re only 5’9, 5’10”, and 5’9”, respectively, they all have decent weights. So, even if none of them have post-draft growth spurts, they’ll still have a decent chance of being stout enough to survive the NHL’s rigors.

11 team NTC list for Kreider.

The cap was supposed to be set at $83M. It got set at $81.5M. Trouba is going to get $8Mper. Pionk is getting $2.5M per? $7M swing.

The lower cap doesn't help the Rangers in their attempts to shed Vesey, Namestnikov, Shattenkirk and Smith. Buying anyone out is dumb.

Buchnevich is worth how much? Arbitration eligible. He is 3 years away from group III. $3M-$3.5M per in a 2 year bridge.

DeAngelo and Lemieux are not arbitration eligible. Tony can get a good bridge contract. Lemieux isn't getting much more than his QO.

The Rangers have more than $5M in performance bonuses. Kakko is getting $2,850,000 in performance bonuses and that guy can hit those bonuses. The Rangers need to save room to pay those bonuses.
The bonus cushion is 7.5% of the upper limit.

The Rangers would be ****ing insane to make moves to pay Panarin $11M-$12M per.

More people pushing the FAKE story about the Rangers wanting Panarin. Just trying to sell newspapers like with Karlsson and Trouba.

It is, but is it worse than having less dead cap + Shatty on the books? We've got over 5 mil in dead cap coming off the books next year, so the bump in Shatty's buyout is mostly negated. After that, it's only about 2.5 mil for 2 years, and we've got Hank, Staal and Smith coming off the books.

Obviously the first choice is to trade Shatty. If we can trade him with 50% retention, that's certainly better than a buyout.

$2,000,000 of those bonuses will be type B bonuses. He'll hit some of those if he wins some awards and if among the top 10 scoring forwards in the league. I mean, here's hoping...

Dont bonuses push to the next years cap hit if you go over? Can a CBA expert better explain?

Yes, and 3 mil of the bonuses will be from Kravtsov, Andersson, Chytil, Georgiev and Fox. They may not earn any of those bonuses. I'm sure management has a good idea of how much cap they need to save.

LHD depth with NHL potential is now:

Miller
Robertson
Skjei
Hajek
Rykov
Staal
Lindgren
Reunanen
Jones
Day
Ragnarsson

We need to build depth at other positions. This is getting crazy.

We’re pretty stacked at RD too.
