I don’t really like Kaliyev much at all but to your point months ago about high CHL scoring Fs— his is at such an elite level where I think he’s gotta be heavily considered if available.

With who he had going after (Kaliyev, McMichael, Poulin, Brink, Pelletier) I wouldn’t like that pick.

Cant go wrong with a name like Bobby Brink. You dont bust with a hockey name like that.

Is Brink going to the NCAA next season or the one after? Elite Prospects shows 20-21.

I think he'll come out early to play though. He didn't stay to play for Minnestona... He got himself exposed and everyone saw just how good he was. He wants it. He'll leave to go pro.

The profiles I've read have him going to Denver next season, given how he tore up the USHL already it would be a little strange to go back there for another season.
I agree. I wondered if there was some academic reason.

EP has Ryan Johnson showing the same... NCAA in 20-21. Could be just a goof or old info.

If he does have an academic issue I wonder if whoever drafts pushes him towards playing Major Junior, Portland Winterhawks own his rights.

Found this pretty interesting.
Couple of guesses i had:
"The next Paul Kariya..." - Newhook who played BCHL and is headed to NCAA.

The kid who competes at everything - Hoglander or Rees.

"Eat minutes like Ryan Suter..." - Not totally sure on this one but i'd say Bjornfot or Robertson or Harley.

I think the Penguins should pursue trading down to get more picks in this draft, there are quite a few teams with multiple 2nd and 3rd rounders that would help the Penguins prospect pool. If you can pull off 2 2nds and a 3rd for pick #21, I definitely think they should do that move.

Just throwing out some options with that:

Carolina: has picks #36, #37, #59 and #90
Ottawa: has picks #32, #44 and #83
New Jersey: has picks #34, #55, #61, #70 and #80
Detroit: has picks #35, #54, #60 and #66

I'd be talking to New Jersey because they just have a metric **** load of picks in this draft. Not only do they have 3 2nds and 2 3rds, but they also have the #1 pick.

Do teams ever do that? I can see trading down to Carolina's 1st for one of their 2nds, but trading out altogether for three picks?

Teams don't usually trade out of the 1st round like that (it's usually a 1st plus a 2nd or 3rd to move up a few spots), but this draft is abnormally deep at the top end. There isn't much of a talent difference in the top-40, so I could see the Penguins willing to trade down 10 spots to get an additional mid-2nd.

The last time a team traded out of the 1st round to get multiple 2nd and 3rd rounders was when Tampa traded pick #29 for pick #34 and pick #68 in 2015. The Islanders did the same thing in that draft with pick #28, they traded #33 and #72 for it. It doesn't usually happen because teams usually only want to trade down a could of spots.

Fair enough.

I'd stick with my guess that the Pens are only trading down if they think they'll get one of the 5-6 guys they're hoping to get and won't go down far - but maybe if they missed out on all of them that could be a goer.

Think Carolina would do 28th + 59th + 121st for 21st + 98th?

Carolina would move up 7 spots, we'd gain a late 2nd and we swap 4ths (The 4th we have is Buffalo's which is 5th pick in the 4th round.

Ideally flip Jarry for whatever pick we can get.

The German in me wants Seider so bad, but highly doubt he will still be there.
I actually like the idea of trading the pick for multiple other picks unless one of the higher guys you like is still there

Take out the 4ths and they still probably do it. 28th and 59th for 21st is already a good trade for them.

My expectation for this draft is that they trade their 1st for a later 1st and a late 2nd, they trade Jarry for a 3rd and they keep the rest of their picks. So they'll end up with say picks #28, #59, #84 (Toronto's 3rd rounder, I think Jarry to Toronto makes sense) and the remaining picks that they have.

I think they'd do that but I don't think that's the correct value for moving down 7 spots. As best I can tell looking at previous drafts, to move down 7 spots, either they give us 59th straight up with no further swapping, or they give us one of 36/37th and we give them 98th - assuming you value going up 4 spots from 22 to 18 and going up 7 spots from 28 to 21 roughly the same, that latter deal is very similar to the one in which the Jets and Flyers swapped in 2016.

If we trade, I would like it to be roster players for picks, whether it be moving up or down. Trading down is fine if the guy we had at the top of our wish list is gone at 21 but otherwise I would rather pick at 21 AND trade roster players to get more picks.

We need cap space and we need prospects. The currency should be roster players.
